CINEMA
Career of a comedy legend
He made a triumphant television debut in 1975, when he won the New Faces talent competition at the age of 18. He anchored the Saturday morning childrens show, Tiswas, from 1978 to 1980, using the show to develop his comic persona. But Lenny did not just stick to childrens entertainment. He appeared on The Black and White Minstrel Show for five years and then joined the hugely popular sketch show, Three of a Kind, alongside Tracey Ullman. Lenny teamed up with the Comic Strip in 1980, when he met comedienne Dawn French, who would later become his wife. By 1984, Lenny was ready for his own show and the Lenny Henry Show ran for a decade, becoming hugely popular with audiences. A return to his stand-up roots followed, with Lenny embarking on the Live and Unleashed shows, bringing him to the attention of Hollywood. Lenny took the lead in the Hollywood film, True Identity, with mixed results. But the BBC sitcom, Chef, followed and it was a big success for Lenny, who also wrote and produced the show. Critical acclaim followed in 1999, when Lenny acted in the straight role of Ian George in the BBC comprehensive school drama, Hope and Glory. He revived his sketch show persona with the show, Lenny Henry in Pieces, in 2000. Lenny was also famous one of the founding figures of Comic Relief. He has won numerous awards throughout his career, including BBC British Personality of the Year and the Edric Connor Inspiration to Black People Award. with what youre doing you make a mind map of the scenes. And to give something back for his personal rewards reaped from comedy and acting, Lenny ploughs his energy into charitable projects including Comic Relief. Commercially Lenny has helped hotel chain Premier Inn promote its 50,000 rooms, although he admits he does not know if he will be staying at the Scunthorpe Inn. Although he spends time with his tour manager, sound and tech guys, having meals and drinks in the hotel bars, he misses home. So after Scunthorpe, Lenny is looking forward to spending Christmas relaxing before he heads back into rehearsals. Lenny Henry is one of the countrys best-loved comedians. The star is back on form and back in Scunthorpe as part of his Pop Life: A One Man Comedy Show About Music. Reporter SELINA MAYCOCK spoke to him
Since I was 16, I was a soul boy who went to soul discos and northern soul, he said. I was a DJ on Radio 1 for four to eight years and moved on to Capital radio. I used to hang around with DJs who used to buy records, so when I was in the shop I would buy records that were tipped to be the best and when I got home and played it they were rubbish. Now I buy music online and its very dangerous because you click and buy something and you end up buying it 14 times. Over the last eight years, music has been more important to me than it used to be. They say youre supposed to play Mozart to babies in the womb to make them more intellectual. If you play them some of my comedy material it would make them stay in. Lenny has had a versatile career from stand-up comedy shows to charity work and Shakespearean acting and he loves performing on the small screen. There should be a campaign started in Scunthorpe to bring Lenny Henry back to do a TV show, he said. Every year, from when I was 16 until 2008, I loved making up stuff for other people. Theres a lot of talk about the BBC at the moment but Id love to have the BBC behind me. When youre talking about the BBC they have been behind the comedies like Steptoe & Son, The Vicar of Dibley, The Young Ones and The Lenny Henry Show. Theres a weird crisis at the moment but they will get out of it. Its an excellent place to work for comedy. When we asked Lenny which one he prefers singing, comedy or acting his response was: Its like saying whos your favourite kid? and answering hes a pain...but I like that one. But when pressed, he said: Stand-up its the best Ive ever been being engaged like that and talking to the audience and getting into the spirit with music. Im enjoying it and thats the most

important thing. And Lenny has already won judges over with his awardwinning performance as Othello in the classic Shakespeare play. He crowned his theatrical debut as the Moor with the Milton Shulman Award for outstanding newcomer at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards. But when performing Shakespeare, Lenny is not silly enough to think he can get away with a laugh or two should he forget his lines. He said: Shakespeare is not like panto, its for intellects. The text you have to get right and theres no ad-libbing with Shakespeare. Othello was brilliant. It was lots of late nights learning lines and falling asleep with a glass of wine on the table. Some people helped me with learning lines but, to be honest, once youre on stage and youre being shown where to stand, what to look like with movement ideas, you start to equate certain lines
RUBY SPARKS
Calvin Weir-Fields (Paul Dano) wrote his first novel at the age of 19. So Calvin follows Dr Rosenthals guidance and churns out volumes about the girl. Senior Screen: Ruby Sparks (12A) Tues 1.00.
