IE 114 Material Science and General Chemistry Recitation #3

This document contains multiple questions related to material science and general chemistry concepts: 1) Questions involve calculating molecular weights, volume changes during phase transitions in iron, crystal structure identification for niobium, atomic packing factors, and linear densities of crystal directions. 2) A question involves sketching and indicating atomic positions on a (110) plane of a body-centered tetragonal metal. 3) Questions involve indexing x-ray diffraction peaks, determining interplanar spacings and atomic radii from diffraction data, and calculating and explaining density discrepancies.

a. What is the fractional volume change in iron as it transforms from BCC to FCC at 910C? Assume that a(BCC) = 0.2910 nm and a.(FCC) = 0.3647 nm. What is the volume change if Fe atoms of fixed radius pack as hard spheres? b. Niobium has a lattice parameter of 0.3307 nm and the atomic radius is 0.147 nm. Does this metal have a BCC or FCC structure? c. Calculate the atomic packing factor for GaAs assuming the structure is composed of Ga and As ions. d. Compute and compare the linear densities of the [100], [110], and [111] directions for Al. 3. What is the atomic planar density (APD) on the (100) and (111) planes of Si? Can you suggest a reason why silicon (111) planes oxidize more rapidly than (100) planes? 4. Write Miller indiceses of planes and directions on the figures below

Atoms of a body-centered tetragonal metal are arranged in a square array on the (001) plane with a lattice constant of 0.460 nm. On the (100) and (010) planes, atoms are arranged in a rectangular array with lattice constants of 0.460 and 0.495 nm. Sketch the atomic positions on the (110) plane and indicate the dimensions. 6. Figure shows the first four peaks of the x-ray diffraction pattern for copper, which has an FCC crystal structure; monochromatic x-radiation having a wavelength of 0.1542 nm was used. (a) Index (i.e., give h, k, and l indices for) each of these peaks. (b) Determine the interplanar spacing for each of the peaks. (c) For each peak, determine the atomic radius for Cu and compare these with the value presented in the Table
