Sloanes There is a rare, protected species lurking among the ordinary British people. They are born with a whole collection of silver spoons in their mouths, which might account for the high-pitched, plummy way they speak. Their natural habitat is Londons elegant Knightsbridge, usually within a stone throw of Sloane Square. But at weekends they flock towards Englands finer country houses and there their feet instantly turn greenencased in wellies of the hunting and fishing variety, even if theyre only walking the dog. When in town, the foliage of the female changes dramatically to good, solid navy-blue. This sensible outfit must be boosted by a string of pearls, ruffled colar and flat shoes like Princess Di used to wear. The male is recognised by his heavy Page 4 of 5
shoes, tweed trousers an lumberjack-type shirt. He will, of course, have a spotted silk handkerchief in the top pocket of his herringbone jacket. They are the Sloanes, a wealthy pack of privileged, fun-loving folk who dont just think they are above the ordinary masses, they are utterly convinced by it. They hate to be infected by close contact with lesser species, but love rubbing shoulders with each other. A typical member of the Sloane tribe, 20-year-old Katie Harvey, trilled: Every morning I just about manage the absolutely frightful Tube journey to work, pressed up against all the common people. Of course, if I was pressed up against a Hooray Henry it would be quite superb, but a dirty old anorak is a different thing altogether. She is not the slightest bit concerned that people in anoraks-dirty or not- might be similarly unimpressed at the thought of rumbling along the District Line staring up at the nostrils of someone with her nose neatly pointed towards the sky. Katies background and breeding gives her an impeccable Sloane pedigree. She hails form a wealthy Straffordshire family, and was looked after by a string of French au pairs in their large farmhouse, crammed with antiques and paintings. She said: My privileged home-life filled me with confidence and pride, and I learned to assert myself at boarding-school. Now that Katie has left home to join up with her fellow nobles in Knightsbridge, the hunt for the right man has begun. Of course, she would never jeopardise her future comfort by falling in love with a workingclass man. Katie smiled gracefully:When a Sloane meets a new man, she finds out about the money situation straight-away. My circle of frinds is full of etremely suitable partners. Men who come from a similar background. Have been away at school and are, naturally, very well-off.
