Collaboration was a natural for this duo, who have worked together as a twoperson shooting teamunder the name elk studiosfor the past five years, ever since they met during a course at the International Center for Photography in New York. The collaborative aspect of their business means they learn from their clients, too, they said. Since they opened elk rentals, business has gradually grown. The client base is mostly peopled by smaller clients, predominantly in editorial and portrait photography. Passing through elk rentals doors these days are New York magazine and Refinery 29 as well as photographers shooting for The Telegraph and The New Yorker. Miami-based Brian Smith describes the Joker, which he first used while appearing on The X Factor, as beautifully designed yet built like a tank. Using a Joker Bug 800 and Crossover Adapter, he shot with the same Profoto modifiers he uses with strobe, while the TV crew filmed motion simultaneously in the same light. K5600 really hit a home run with the Joker Bug 1600, Smith says. It kicks out more light than a 5K Tungsten lamp, yet can still run off a 15 amp 110 volt line. That low-wattage detail is one of the reasons Craig Samuel invested in his K5600 HMIs three years ago. They produce the most powerful and most natural light there is, he says. And they plug into a standard wall plug. As the owner of the busiest fullservice still and motion studio in Toronto, in addition to being a photographer himself, Samuel wanted lights that could take some abuse in the rental department and still continue to work. Thanks to the Jokers tank-like construction, hes not been disappointed. Then theres the magician-like Adrien Broom, Brooklyn-based and working out of an old Erector Set factory in Connecticut. For her work-in-progress, The Color Project, shes creating a series of elaborate setseight in all and taking a year to completeto tell the story of a young girl traveling through worlds in which everything is a single color. Shooting both still and motionwhile staging at least six different parts of a story within each setshe needed lighting capable of defining and flattering every aspect. For an underwater scene requiring a sunlight mimic, Broom used the 800 with a Frosted Fresnel lens and simple barn doors. It worked perfectly for both the film and the stills, she says. K5600 lights have made this whole process easy and beautiful.

Theres a short learning curve on these mobile apps, but nothing that cant be easily overcome. If you need more, you can send the files to the full version of Photoshop (Creative Cloud or a desktop version). The tablet app is easier to work with due to the larger screen size, but we recommend using a stylus for both versions. Either way, its a great app for on-the-fly or in-thefield image editing.

RECREATING NORTH LIGHT: For this shot, I used a Photoex Large OctoDome. I wanted to recreate the feeling of North Light, which refers to a style of lighting made famous by Irving Penn. In a literal sense, its like using natural light coming from a Northern exposure. I used both baes in the OctoDome with no silver or gold panels inserted. Its a very white, diused quality of light. The OctoDome was nearly tabletop, maybe at a 25-degree angle right above my subject. I was literally backed into the bottom of the OctoDome. Spanier

A QUICK SAVE: This image for Danskins Activewear catalogue is what you might call a save. The planned shot, along with a waytoo-long shot list for one day, was to have our model jumping rope or holding the jump rope in the middle of a brick-lined street. Outside on a hot summer day, where the sun would not quit, we tried and tried to make it work, but it just wasnt happening. Working with a limited budget, we were without enough power to get beyond the extremely strong sun, and had no option for overhead diusion or semblance of shade nearby. We were quickly running out of time before having to move on to the next set, and ultimately had to abandon the shot. As we drove to the next location, I spotted the wall of an apartment building in slight shade of another building. We quickly pulled over and with a Photoex TritonFlash and Small OctoDome (front diusion face and gold panels inserted), we captured the look the creative director had wanted from the start. Spanier
signment for Muscle & Fitness, Spanier was asked to photograph the Florida Gators NCAA College Football team during a practice session. The athletes were pulled after training sessions one by one to shoot with Spanier, who needed to take quick shots that maintained a consistent look and quality of light. To achieve this, Spanier set up a small Photoex HalfDome with a strobe, and a key light above it in a small OctoDome.

He nds this setup takes remarkably little eort to get a great shot from each subject, and he has translated it to corporate shoots and other projects where time is severely limited. Spanier hopes that his blog posts will resonate with photographers the way
that Photoex lighting lessons resonated with him. Its the little details that count, he says. If you can pick up a new trick, or even be inspired to modify an idea from the blog to make it your own, then it has accomplished the right intention.

ince launching in 2006, Siren Studios has evolved from a full-service photography studio to a creative campus for entertainment production, spanning four acres on Sunset Boulevard. With the slogan Old Hollywood values, new Hollywood edge, Siren has become an epicenter for all things media. Its campus includes eight studios, two rooftops, a digital center and a special events division that provided services for 57 charity and brand events in 2012 alone. Siren Digital sent four lms to Sundance this year, and hosted events on Main Street to celebrate independent lmmakers. Visual Storyteller
Photographer and cinematographer Jonathan Chapman trailblazes a path as a versatile director of still and motion campaigns. By Harrison Jacobs
onathan Chapman is wearing many hats today: photographer, cinematographer and director. He and his crew are staring up at a thick oak tree, trying to gure out how they will turn the single shot requested by their client, Lowes Home Improvement, of a boy looking out from his treehouse, into a short brand lm he can sell to his clients later on. Chapman is shooting, andas alwayshe is capturing extra in-the-moment shots as well. Hes known for going above and beyondits the reason clients hire him. He starts looking for angles and moments that will build to the climactic shot of the boy. Theres a behind-the-trunk shot of the boy running toward the tree, the low-angle shot of the boy putting his hands on the rst rungs of a makeshift ladder, and a shot from above as the boy climbs. In almost every instance, as Chapman nishes shooting stills, the talent repeats the shot so that he can grab motion clips with his second camera. Later, either his in-house editor or a separate post-production house will cut the clips into a one| STUDIO + EQUIPMENT GUIDE 2013
to two-minute highlight reel. Right now, Chapman is displaying the type of visual creativity and eciency that has made his cinematography services as popular as his photographic ones. The lines between photography and cinematography are blurring, in no small part due to photographers like Chapman. The Minneapolis-based photographer, who has done still and motion campaigns for worldwide brands such as McDonalds, Target and Samsung, prefers to call himself a visual storyteller. In the future, I believe that there will be less of a denition between a still photographer and a lmmaker, Chapman says. Its all about the way you see the world. Since he rst began taking on motion commissions in 2009, Chapman has steadily grown the cinematography side of his business. At this point, clients often ask him if he even shoots stills anymore. He is still hired frequently for his stilphotography, but somewhere between 60 and 75 percent of his projects include a motion element, with a percentage being entirely motion.

The Lowes campaign is typical of the shoots Chapman and his crew produce today. Going back to the rst motion campaign he ever sold (for McDonalds), Chapman often takes a still campaign and adds a motion component with or without the client signing o on it. He then sells the option to the client later. According to Chapman, the client opts to buy it 75 percent of the time. For him, the payo is worth the risk. Being able to oer extra content six months down the line opens a ton of doors, says Chapman. While many photographers might have trouble with a production schedule that is already tight, Chapman always includes time for extra shotsits part of his style. He captures details, as well as secondary and lifestyle shots, for every campaign he shoots. While certainly more complex, adding motion was almost as simple as hitting the record button. Chapmans approach also allows him to be more visually daring. When it comes to advertising agencies, every shot is storyboarded and debated in conference rooms for months before Chapman arrives on the scene. By taking shots and clips that the client didnt ask for, he has more control over the end product. The shots end up far more fresh and engaging. Its the stu that clients havent spent weeks thinking about in oces or conference rooms that people get excited about. It shows them the creative latitude of how you see, says Chapman. As the demand for Chapmans cinematography services has increased, the complexity of the assignments has increased as well. Over the past year, he has shot motion-heavy campaigns for Samsung in Los Angeles and Target in San Francisco, and a full commercial for the Minnesota Twins Community Fund. All three were far more reminiscent of a lm shootcomplete with grip trucks, broadcast and line producers and a Los Angeles director of photography than a traditional photography shoot. Chapmans studio adapts to the changing demands of each shoot, and the equipment, like the crew, changes accordingly. For example, the Samsung campaign was shot on a combination of Canon 5D Mark IIIs and broadcast cameras such as the Sony FS700, modied to accept Canon lenses, which Chapman describes as his

workhorse. Meanwhile, the Twins commercial was shot solely on broadcast cameras, and the Target campaign was shot exclusively on Canon 5D Mark IIIs. When using an HDSLR like the Canon 5D Mark III, Chapman often uses cinema or cine lenses, which are specically created for lm and video. The main advantage of these lenses is the longer throw on the focusing ring. To shift focus 10 feet on a traditional lens, a photographer would slide the focusing ring about half an inch. On the cinema lens, a 360-degree spin of the focusing ring will cover the same range. Thats important in lm in which you need to follow focus manually. You dont have to be quite as precise, explains Chapman. Theres more room to track subjects. One of the biggest changes for Chapman has been the broader, more specialized range of crewmembers on motion| STUDIO + EQUIPMENT GUIDE 2013
based productions. While traditional still photographers may be used to having complete control over the visuals of a shoot, its a much dierent playing eld in the lm world. According to Chapman, when clients hire him to shoot motion, they are used to larger crews, including broadcast producers, line producers, a director, a director of photography, second and third unit camera operators, grips, gaers, ACs and often many others. Motion-based productions also require a longer production schedule, allowing time for post-production and editing, which involve another layer of creative partners including editors, graphic animators, audio engineers, and colorists. While that collaboration was jarring at rst, Chapman now nds this to be one of his favorite aspects of the shoots. I simply cant imagine having gotten to where we have without the level of collaboration required in the realm of lm. Its pretty thrilling when you nd people that can help interpret your vision but also bring something else to the project, says Chapman. For the Target campaign, Chapman was
asked to create a day in the life short lm of an urban athlete in San Francisco wearing Targets C9 athletic apparel. Shot over the course of four days, Chapman and his crew composed a series of interlocking shots, as the lm switches from morning joggers to midday soccer players to afternoon cyclists before linking back up with the joggers at dusk. According to Chapman, because of his studios versatility, they were able to shoot in four days what would have taken a traditional lm crew between one and two weeks. Chapman, who directed the shoot and ran the rst A camera, brought on lmmaker Eric Schleicher and two shooters from California-based Stillmotion to help capture multiple points of views for the shoot. During each shot, all four shooters would take dierent angles. After each take, Chapman and his fellow shooters would often compare the footage and nd it a refreshing and inspiring challenge to see who had the best point-of-view. It was competitive in a great way, says Chapman. By the end of it, we were all pretty psyched. We all learned from each other and came away with a wide

range of options for each shot and sequence. Chapman got into motion early, and while there is a continual path of rening and learning, he has nearly made a full transition to the lm world. But now, as he watches the next wave of still photographers make the switch, hes not sure all are doing it the right way. Weve seen a lot of [traditional still photographers] who are starting out in the lm world and theyre often taking it all on themselves, says Chapman. These shooters, according to Chapman, work to shoot, edit and produce. If you really want to elevate [your work], you are going to have to bring other people on. It was on the recent Samsung campaign that Chapman fully embraced the lm approach. The concept was a lifestyle shoot featuring families and couples using Samsung products in their everyday lives. The client hired Chapman to direct and shoot stills, but they also gave him a budget to bring on a director of photography out of Los Angeles. This director of photography, Patrick Lawler, required that they also hire his assistant camera, Rich Hawkinson, whose job is to pull focus, or make sure that wherever the camera is pointed, the subject is in focus. While working with the two traditional lmmakers, Chapman picked up on how the symbiotic relationship between Lawler and Hawkinson made the shoot far more ecient. Its a concept that Chapman has now begun to work into shoots where he is behind the camera. All this talk about the lm world might make some think that Chapman has eschewed his title as a still photographer altogether, but this couldnt be further from the truth. Chapman maintains that he isnt looking to replace traditional lm crews. Rather, he approaches motion purely from a still photographers perspective. Its a dierent look, explains Chapman. [Our look] is more organicPeople are looking for more of that natural, less-polished, still-nessed, but less locked o and more handheld look today. For those thinking of switching over, Chapman recently received some advice from a veteran lm editor. Hold on to your name as a still photographer because you are known to have visual sensibilities that a director of photography might not quite possess, the editor told Chapman. Thats good news for other photographers looking to throw their hat in the motion ring.

une Studios owner Jay Stradwick decided to take a risk when he crossed the border in 2009, moving his business to New York City after serving fashion clients in Toronto for 10 years. After 2007, when the Canadian dollar started trading equally against the U.S. dollar, he found his clients were no longer saving money in their budgets. They did, however, express interest in shooting in New York, and they have followed him since.

There are also drive-in capabilities, a 2,000-square-foot space for large room sets and construction, multiple loading docks, client meeting areas and a full-sized kitchen. Duggal Visual Solutions founder Baldev Duggal understands that expansion requires both an innovative brand and exciting culture to propel it. His vision for sustainability is clear in his eco-focused subsidiary of Duggal Visual Solutions, Duggal Energy Solutions, which is poised
to become the worlds rst environmentally conscious leading resource center. In 2008, Duggal began transforming a massive space in the Brooklyn Navy Yard into the Duggal Greenhouse. The Duggal Greenhouse is a sweeping 35,000-square-foot arts, events and alternative studio space with 70-foot ceilings and 45-foot windows overlooking the East River and Williamsburg Bridge. Once home to the USS Missouri battleship during its construction in 1941, the building fell into disrepair and neglect for years until Duggal saw it as an opportunity to combine his passion for photography and
the arts with his groundbreaking sustainable initiatives. Toward the end of the initial renovation, the venue had to be re-renovated because of damage suered from Hurricane Sandy. The second renovation was completed and the venue ofcially opened in February 2013. The sun-drenched Duggal Greenhouse is designed with sustainable detail and will be even greener with wind and solar power, and other innovative technologies in the coming years. The building is currently surrounded by 91 solar panel and wind-turbine-powered street lamps designed by Duggal and his subsidiary company, LumiSolair. In addition to sustainability, Duggal and theDuggalGreenhouse are dedicated to full-scale visual and events management covering all aspects of consultation, graphic design, production and fulllment. The space is open to rent for private functions, live events, creative projects, fashion shows, product launches and photo shoots, and has already hosted Nike, Heineken and international recording superstars. Duggal also occupies six other buildings at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, housing much of its photoprinting and display graphic production, and plans to expand its culture worldwide. Baldev Duggal has turned the Brooklyn Navy Yard into a hub for sustainability, and hopes to place New York City on the map as a center of eco-friendly living by combining creative culture with viable environmental solutions.

When we opened our doors seven years ago, this was a quiet, mixed-use residential/industrial neighborhood, says Left Space Studio Manager Dakota Chase. Since then, the area has blossomed with restaurants and cafes, creating a pleasant atmosphere of community. Founded by a successful photographer with forty years of commercial and ne-art credentials, Left Space doesnt miss a detail. With an in-house equipment rental department and a well-designed, spotless facility, Chase says, I can condently say that we set the bar for rental studios in San Francisco. A 23,000-square-foot facility, the four ground-oor studiosrange in size from 900 to 3,800 square feet and oer every amenity, including a fully appointed kitchen. With four rental studios, Left Space is able to support the constant ow of productions coming in every day. Chase says the business has seen a healthy upturn in the past few years, and shes happy that Left Space has been able to support both local and international photographers. We very
clearly saw our industry gain strength as the economy started to bounce back, she says. We often call Left Space the litmus test for the health of the local photo business. Supremely located o two freeway exits and a block from the train station, 4th Street Studios is owned and operated by award-winning photographer Mel Lindstrom. 4th Street is considerably larger than most studios in San Francisco, with 2,200 square feet of actual shooting space, and because in recent years Lindstrom has found himself renting the space for video shoots more often than still, sound is a particularly important feature. One of his own promotional videos gives a terric show of what he can accommodate, with a breathtaking mid-air performance by aerial artist Naomi Hummel, who wore a safety harness rigged from the center beam of the main stage. While people come mostly for the cove and large shooting area, he says, Lindstrom has noticed a denite trend of less is more among rental clients. They used to want a fully equipped studio, he says. Now it seems like they want nothing but the empty space. Less is more is starting to apply to time as well. San Franciscos Blue Sky LightGrid is a facility where studio space is often rented for very short blocks of time, and for some relatively new reasons. Blue Sky enables the micro-entrepreneur, student or individual to achieve professional results aordably, says owner and longtime photographer Bill Delzell. At Blue Sky, which hes owned for 17 years, he collaborates with his clients in his LightGrid studio. A patented turnkey solution, the LightGrid incorporates touch-screen lighting formulas into a robotically controlled studio where sound, light and capturefor both photography and video productionare seamlessly integrated.

With full green screen capabilities, the LightGrid eliminates hours of costly setup and preparation, once taken for granted as a part of any photo shoot. As a result, Delzell now sees a big demand for hourly use of the space. Changes in technology have altered not just the photo business, Delzell points out, but the advertising industry itself. Adweeks recent article on The Tween Machine summed it up, he says. The author says this new powerful consumer does not want to be advertised to, they want to be engaged. ing everything from communications to content to engagement. With this phenomenon, 60 percent of Delzells shoots are video; the rest are a hybrid of video and stills shot simultaneously. With the understanding that a rental studio must keep pace with evolving client requirements to be successful, Blue Sky hosts a unique residency program called The Work Yard, which serves multiple purposes. In the studio, newly graduated interdisciplinary students gather to collaborate as a creative team, with a goal of rening and empowering brand strategy. The program oers an affordable solution to companies wanting
to build their brands through the social media prism while giving new grads an opportunity to enter the work force with hands-on experience. I used to feel accomplished if I made one good image for an advertising client in a day, Delzell says. But, as he reminds the residents, everything that happens in front of the camera is still the domain of the creative individual, and that will never change. Its an exciting time for image makers of all disciplines, he says. Rethinking the path to a meaningful and engaging career is vital to anyone hoping to be seen, heard and recognized by this very elusive 21st-century audience.

otion has been the natural progression for many photographers who are looking to grow their business, and the demand has never been higher. When speaking with Steve Kalalian, CEO of capture and production company Industrial Color Productions, it was refreshing to hear him say, Its a wonderful time in the world of creative production.Theres so much content thats needed. The outlets for motion imaging are many, extending beyond traditional commercials and movies to include the Web, mobile and even print. Kalalian explains, You can put your iPhone on a cereal box and it will play a video via the QR code or via ad recognition. But its not just demand that has opened up the eld of video and production. The cost of entry has decreased while the capabilities of production tools have increased. Equipment that used
to be half a million dollars is now $2,500 to$150,000 [or even less], like DaVinci Resolve, Maya, Flameall these applications are getting more powerful and faster. Take a look at Industrial Colors CGI production of music group Swedish House Maa to better understand what hes talking about. Were doing things with liquid that used to take dayswork thats amazingly realistic that were able to do pretty quickly, and it looks better. Additionally, these tools are much more accessible today to a wider range of people. Kalalian says, Theres a whole community of students who are learning these applications in school. As president of an imaging and production company for 23 years, Kalalian oered excellent insight into the essentials of success. The three pillars, explains Kalalian, are artistic expression, technical accuracy and production capacity.

INDUSTRIAL COLOR
For artistic expression and technical accuracy, he cites tasks such as color grading and compositing. For the former, investing in quality tools is a must. If you dont have a $5,000 to $20,000 color-accurate monitoring system or very precise instruments to measure color output, you are already starting o in a dangerous system. Compositing (e.g., green screen work) entails both artistic expression and technical accuracy. While a compositing jobs mask edges might look good at low resolution [on the Web], for example, if its going to be scrutinized in other media like broadcast or a video billboard in Times Square, Kalalian explains, thats when all the aws start popping out. Production capacity is, of course, critical. If you dont have the right tools, Kalalian says, a specic task could take you a week. But with the correct tools, it could take an hour. Rendering, as we all know, can slow down a production, so Industrial Color has a large render farm, to quickly handle long clips and allow time for feedback and changes in order to meet tight deadlines. Of course, not everyonewhether youre a solo practitioner or work with a teamcan aord to have a setup like Industrial Color. Its important to know when its time to hand o some of your work to a larger production facility. Kalalian suggests that you stay small scale or invest in the right equipment and build a team or connect with a facility. Additionally, the ability to understand when youre in a discomfort zone, is particularly important. One might assume this only applies to those working individually or with small teams, but Kalalian says, We face it ourselves. We dont want to take on something so far out of our wheel house that we might jeopardize the project. . . .Those are the same questions we ask ourselves. While it may appear that there are many hurdles to overcome, outsourcing work that you feel is beyond your current capabilities is a wise move. But Kalalian is encouraging. Its a great time to enter into this eld, and I would always encourage people to do so, he says. Keeping in mind the lower cost of entry and the more sophisticated capabilities of tools like software applications mentioned earlier, we put together a quick roundup of products that will help you work more eciently and eectively throughout the post-production process, with an emphasis on both practical and creative video retouching.

lieswhich are especially noticeable with HD and 4K videocan mar an otherwise beautiful scene and require tedious retouching that makes the same task in Photoshop seem like a breeze. Not so with the Beauty Box Video plug-in. Face-recognition technology automatically creates a layer mask to ensure that adjustments will apply only to skin and not other elements of the scene. Masks can be tweaked if/when needed, and correctionsfrom skin smoothing and color correction to shine removal and amount of detailswill be applied to the remainder of the clip (assuming consistent lighting throughout). Masks can be created manually, a process thats necessary when, for example, you want to make adjustments to non-facial skin (hands, neck, etc.). Version 3.0 was released in June for Adobe After Eects, Premiere Pro and Apple Final Cut Pro 7/X, with versions for Assimilate Scratch, NUKE, Sony Vegas and for the rst time, AVID, by the time you read this. The new version oers an improved automasking algorithm as well as more than 35 preset styles, some of which are based on looks found in fashion magazines, to further enhance this already smooth and speedy workow. If youre new to skin retouching in video or Beauty Box Video, Digital Anarchys site oers tips and tutorials to help you along. Suite, now in version 11.4.3 , bundles nine dierent plug-ins (which are also available individually). The suite includes Colorista II for color correction, Denoiser II for noise reduction, Frames, which allows you to create a 24p look from interlaced footage and Looks 2, which, as the name implies, provides tools to create various looks for your lmeither original or from presets. These looks can be shared with colleagues who also use Looks 2 (for still images theres a separate product called PhotoLooks 2). Mojos simpler interface uses sliders to change the feel of your video, with warm-cool options and the ability to desaturate or super-saturate colors as well as adjust skin tones; meanwhile, Cosmo is specically designed for glamour shots and making your subjects look younger. Grinder and Instant HD are more practical plug-ins for converting formats of DSLR videos, while the latter converts SD to HD. Check the website for host application compatibility, including the broadest matches with Adobe premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro 7. While you may not need or want all nine plug-ins, buying the suite may be more economicalconsidering the nal investment for all the apps individually is $1,491, the $800 price of the suite is quite a bargain. EDELKRONE SLIDERPLUS+
Using a slider will let you achieve smooth camera motion, whether in and out or side to side. Its a set of rails that sits between your camera and your tripod and allows you to move the camera smoothly. What sets the SliderPLUS+ apart is its compact design. At only a foot long and 3.7 pounds, it ts easily in a backpack or a large camera bag, which makes it easy to carry for a location shoot. It gives you 1.7 feet of sliding range, and unlike other sliders, its rails move along with the camera meaning they wont appear in your shot when you pull back (with most lenses). You can adjust the resistance on the SliderPLUS+, and its four heightadjustable feet let you use it on the ground or a tabletop instead of on a tripod (although its sliding range is limited to .85 feet with that setup). Its also compatible with a motorized motion-control unit from Edelkrone that you can use to automatically control motion for video or set up for a time-lapse series of still shots. Edelkrone also sells a 1.5-foot XL version that gives you 2.6 feet of sliding range on a tripod and 1.3 on a tabletop. Price: $499.99 for the SliderPLUS+ $699.99 for the SliderPLUSXL www.edelkrone.com
MOVEYOURCAMERA.COM CINESPIDER
When it comes to versatility, this little contraption is hard to beat. A modular support system, the CineSpider has a base plate and a set of short, socket-mounted arms at its heart. With your camera mounted on the base plate, and the arms attached to the plate, you can select from a variety of accessories that t into the socket at the end of each arm, depending on the type of shot you want. Filming a car chase? You can attach the super strong CineSpider suction cup accessories and mount your camera on the side of
a vehicle. Want to achieve smooth camera motion in the studio? Replace the suction cups with rollerblade-style wheels to turn the CineSpider into a tabletop dolly. The position of the wheels can be adjusted to ne-tune the curve it follows, too. There are attachments for mounting the base plate on standard 15mm rods so that you can attach the CineSpider to another support device. And when you dont need the whole CineSpider for your camera, the legs can be used separately as supports, as long as theres something to stick to the suction cup end: the ball mounts that t into the arm sockets are equipped with standard 1/4-20 studs. Price: $169.99 - $499 www.moveyourcamera.ambitiousme.com
VARIZOOM STEALTHY
Unless youre going for the intentionally shaky look, stealthy is what you want to be when youre handholding a camera to shoot video. VariZoom provides a whole array of ways to achieve stealth with this rig, and its compact design makes it easy to carry for location shoots. You can congure it to serve as a simple handle for eye-level shooting, recongure it with an arm that rests against your chest for three-point shooting, or use it as a short monopod by swinging the arm down. When the arm is in the down position, you can unlock the gimballed hand grip to turn the Stealthy into a stabilizer. By adding VariZooms optional monopod leg extension, you can bring your camera up to a 6-foot height. You can also set the Stealthy on a surface and let it stand on its own as a tabletop pod, and when youre not shooting, you can fold it up and hang it on your belt with an included clip. Its built to support up to three pounds, but VariZoom also sells a counterweight attachment that brings the weight limit up to 5 pounds. Price: $349 www.varizoom.com
doesnt mean it lacks power. Zacuto rates its output at 2,000 lumens, which outshines competing LED panels. The PlaZma Light is dimmable, too. Its high color-rendering index (CRI) of 90+ means its illumination should be very consistent, and Zacuto is offering it in 5800K and 3200K versions. The 1 x 1foot model is just under an inch thick, and Zacuto plans to oer more panel sizes in the future. The PlaZma Light can be powered by AC or a battery. Its one of the pricier items on our list, but since it looks like a great lighting option for still shots too, you might want to splurge. Available fall 2013. Price: $1,350 www.zacuto.com

Newton, MA 02458 (617) 268-3303 (617) 340-2177 Fax: (617) 268-3536 www.californiastreetstudios.com To fill the void of daylight space in the Boston area, partners Angela Coppola and Paul Saraceno opened the bright, sunny California Street Studios. After five years of operation it has become a favorite rental studio for photographers, magazines and corporations nationwide. The layout provides great flexibility and openness, with the unobstructed light and 21-foot cyc wall being Coppolas favorite features. Her many trips to New York spaces influenced the studios design. I drew upon the best and worst of what I had the opportunity to shoot in, she says. The 5000-square-foot facility has ceiling heights from 11.5 feet to 12.5 feet, and three shooting areas that can be made into different configurations, making it ideal for product, fashion and catalog shoots. Equipment rental is on hand here too, including Broncolor and Profoto.

With an ever-expanding equipment room, including Profoto, KinoFlo lighting, Canon and Hasselblad cameras and Arri and Mole lighting (with rates often below that of rental houses) plus in-house grip equipment, clients are free to explore their creative ideas without breaking their budget. K5600 LIGHTING

Motion requires continuous light, and digital loves daylight. K5600 thinks you and your current crew can deliver both still and motion, on the same set at the same time, without busting the budget. The Joker looks and performs just like the flash heads you use every day. Add their unique Crossover Adapters, and many of the light-shaping accessories you already own are put to work in a new way. 20 years ago, in 1992, K5600 was born with two products: the Joker 200 and 400. At a time when lighting manufacturers were racing to develop ever larger HMIs, the K5600 team looked in the opposite direction, using HMI technology but for smaller wattages. In the beginning, freelance cameramen embraced Jokers compact size, high output and reliability, making it perfect for covering news events and two-camera interviews. Later, motion picture and commercial DPs discovered the Jokers, and today filming photographers, because of the explosion of web videos, are propelling K5600 into all aspects of motion capture. Their 200, 400, 800, and the new 1600 Jokers deliver plenty of flicker-free daylight to capture stills and motion. K5600s philosophy is to create innovative products that are controllable, versatile, and designed for the filming photographer. Their innovative accessories turn the Joker into the Swiss army knife of lightingone tool that can be used for many applications. Examples include an ellipsoidal (nicknamed the Jo-Leko), a softlight within lightbanks, a linear softlight with the Softube, and a giant fresnel with the Big-Eyeall made possible by their core design philosophy. As the industry comes full circle, K5600 has developed Alphasa line of unique fresnel instruments in wattages from 1600 to 18,000. K5600 has two manufacturing plants (USA and France) and is in studios and on location worldwide.

STILLMOTION STUDIOS
3550 Westview Dr., Studio 101 Naples, FL 34104 (239) 263-0094 (800) 537-1277 www.stillmotion.com Led by his passion for photography and a wish to help the community grow and have access to quality space, Steve Thorson filled the gap for a professional large-scale photo studio in Southwest Florida, opening StillMotion Studios in Naples two years ago. Whether you shoot fashion, commercial, product or vehicles, you wont find a more suitable studio, he says. As the largest, fullservice, state-of-the-art, fully equipped studio space in the region, StillMotion attracts discerning photographers, filmmakers, production companies and talent representatives. Its extensive size, with five shooting areas, allows for running several scenes at a time without having to strike and reset. Because Thorson shoots collector cars, the two-wall infinity cove was designed around a large 1950s sedan. Combined with the 20x20foot overhead sail, the cove offers a dramatic effect for shooting large groups of people as well. StillMotion provides the perfect setting to take advantage of size and stretch the capabilities of the craft.

Reviews
We are a photo retouching service firm, explains owner Flora Lee. Her company focuses on clipping paths for digital images, something she describes as very critical for photographers to make clean, crispy photo shots. Starting with plenty of experience in what she perceived to be an underserved part of the industry, shes been at it since 2002. Many companies have their own teams to do clipping paths in-house, she says, but the employee turnover rate is high. As she puts it, it isnt easy for employers to retain qualified workers willing to continue working on this tedious and boring job for a long time. Thats where Flora Lee is on to something big. She can overlook the tedium and see the larger picture. Shes a real pro, it shows, and business is booming.

SINTAK STUDIO
2779 16th St. San Francisco, CA 94103 (415) 255-7734 www.sintak.net Named for co-owners Angela Sinicropi and Marty Takigawa, Sintak Studio provides an ideal antidote to the typical cavernous, cold rental studio. Sintak features 14-foot ceilings with exposed redwood beams, warm sandblasted red brick walls and light maple wood floors, as well as a full kitchen and bathroom. Housed in a single-unit building that was originally a bakery in the 1920s, the main shooting area is set back from the street, making it a quiet working environment. Photographer friends were constantly asking to use their studio and encouraging them to make it a rental space, so in 2003 they opened for business. Photographers and their clients love the comfort and luxury of our space, say Sinicropi and Takigawa. Close to downtown, the airport, restaurants and photo supply stores, Sintak is located in the perfect area to serve all client and photographer needs.

JR LIGHTING
9 E. Brooks Ave. North Las Vegas, NV 89030 (702) 649-5555 Fax: (702) 649-5566 www.jrlighting.com As the largest lighting, grip and generator house in Nevada, JR Lighting has been renting equipment to film and television productions since 1991. Out-of-town photographers go for the popular one-ton box truck package, which comes with a selection of grip equipment and hot lights, on rolling carts. With a lift gate and room for other gear, its ideal for any location. The full package, all equipment and expendables are listed on their website.

Traveling Light
BY JOSH ROOT
ir travel is a necessity for many professional photographers. Email, smartphones and video conferencing may allow us to communicate with clients from around the globe, but they cant turn Seattle into South Beach or Paris, Kentucky, into Paris, France. Sometimes you just have to be there. In recent years, carry-on rules have tightened up considerably. Whereas once I could easily walk on with Lowepros biggest backpack, today my cameras are just one grumpy gate attendant away from the ominous, Youll have to check that, sir. With this in mind, here are four rolling bags that wont break your back as you walk through miles of airport terminals, will make it through the carry-on bag-sizer, and will allow you to keep your gear close at hand during the ight.
