September 11, 2013 A few Sundays ago, Mike Lemieux, a hockey player friend of many of us, was riding

his bike up on the Eastern Promenade near East End Beach in Portland, Maine. He was on his bike looking out over the ocean and, somehow, he fell from his bike, broke his neck and rolled down to the water's edge. Unable to move, Michael kept calling for help. Someone finally heard him and help arrived before the incoming tide. I visited Michael at the ICU at Maine Medical Center on Wednesday and Friday two weeks ago. He is paralyzed from the neck down. Amazingly, his spirits were very upbeat, and he was looking forward to starting his therapy in Boston. He is currently at Kindred Hospital in Peabody, Massachusetts. The mailing address is 15 King Street, Peabody, MA 01960. Michael is a single, 42 year old father with two children. His son Jean-Claude is as junior hockey player at Cheverus High School in Portland, and Victoria will be a freshman at Cheverus and will play in the Casco Bay Youth Hockey Association this year. Casco Bay Youth Hockey Association and our own Ted Herman Scholarship Fund have both already stepped up and provided for all future hockey-related costs for Michael's children. Hearing this brought tears to Michael's eyes. The reality of medical costs and future needs are obvious. In an attempt to help, I have organized a Hockey Tournament & Auction Fundraiser. The Auction will be held at the Elks Lodge on outer Congress Street in Portland at 5:00pm on Saturday, October 26th. The Elks Lodge is just across the street from the Congress Street entrance to the Portland Jetport. The Hockey Tournament will be held at 3 different arenas for 3 distinct groups of hockey players. th On Friday night, October 25 , The University of New England has donated 3 hours of ice-time from 6:15pm 9:45pm. This event will be for High School age hockey players only. On Saturday th morning, October 26 in Yarmouth, NYA Travis Roy Arena has donated 4 hours of ice-time from 7:00am 11:30am. This event will be for Mens League players (basically adults under age 50 for higher skill levels. Then in Falmouth on Saturday afternoon, Family Ice Center has donated 3 hours from 12:20pm 3:50pm for the 50+ Greater Portland Oldtimers groups. To call it a "tournament" is misleading. Each event will be more of a "jamboree" - a time to get on the ice, play some hockey, talk about Mike, sign a card for him, etc. It is more about supporting one of our own than trying to 'win' a tournament. For each event, players will sign up as individuals and I will assign them to teams, mixing up players from all teams & groups best I can. To participate in one of these tournaments, please send a check payable to The Michael Lemieux Fund to John Lightbody, Murray Plumb & Murray, 75 Pearl Street, Portland, ME 04101. A donation of $50 for the Oldtimers and Adult Mens League players, and $20 for High School aged players. You may certainly make your check out for more! Please write on the for line at the lower left of your check whether you are High School, Mens League or Greater Portland Oldtimers 50+. If you are not a hockey player, you may still help in three ways. 1. Make a donation to the Michael Lemieux Fund. 2. Donate an item to the auction. 3. Attend the auction at the Elks Lodge and get the word out to help to bring more buyers to the auction. Our hockey community has always been quick to come to the aid of one of our own. It's time to do so again. Gordie Gordon L. Wakelin Primary Residential Mortgage 360 Route 1, Scarborough, ME Cell: 233-5555 Office: 885-5070 [email protected]
