Note: Your prescribed textbook contains a large number of examples with detailed solutions. Try to work out these problems without first going through the solutions in the textbook. Refer to the solutions for verification. Selected example problems will be mentioned during the lectures for careful self-study. It is OK to study in groups to work out practice problems.
You are encouraged to work out own solutions to tutorial problems before coming to your tutorial sessions.
3. First Law of Thermodynamics, Chapter 4 Sections 4-1 through 4-4 4. Entropy, Chapter 6 Sections 6-1 through 6-13 (subject to minor changes to be discussed in class)
Tutors: Mr. Shijun Wang and Mr Shek Rahman. Tutorial problem sets are posted on module website (IVLE). Please attempt to solve the problems and bring your solutions to the tutorial session for discussion and presentations.

Notes Regarding Tutorial Problems: These are selected to help you understand and apply the basic concepts developed in this module. To be truly effective it is important that you attempt solutions to the problems prior to your attendance at the tutorial sessions. Please focus on understanding of the fundamental concepts rather than on the mechanics of solving specific problems. Try to identify any assumptions made explicitly or implicitly. Also think of possible variants of the problems.

During the class it is proposed to go over example problems to illustrate concepts and terminology. Practice problems will be suggested for home study during lectures. These are not tutorial problems. They will be selected from the textbook. It is important that you have a personal copy of the recommended textbook. Remember the famous Chinese proverb; I hear; I forget I see; I remember I do; I understand

Some useful web sites- Visit them when you have some time !
It is optional but recommended to those who wish to get the broader picture: These are listed also on Prof. Mujumdars NUS webpage http://serve.me.nus.edu.sg/arun/ under Useful links.
Notes supplied contain extra problems and solutions for self study; we may not have time to go over these during lectures.

Several excellent textbooks are available which cover our subject matter. However, you may not have the time to refer to several books.
Closing Remarks
Please refer to text frequently to supplement the brief PPT NOTES used during the lectures. Slides used in lectures are NOT intended to supplant textbook- only to supplement it. Learn by doing. This is a FUNdamental module- applications abound although we do not have time to explore them in detail at this stage! All physical/ chemical/ biological processes MUST obey ALL laws of Thermodynamics- no exceptions!
