Homework 2 Solutions

This document contains 5 homework problems related to fluid mechanics: 1) Calculating the force of water on a submerged cube and the tension in the tether. 2) Finding the gauge pressure at a point in a tank containing two liquids of different densities. 3) Deriving an expression and evaluating the pressure difference in a pipe with water flowing downward at an angle. 4) Finding the minimum weight needed to hold closed a gate submerged in water. 5) Computing the magnitude and line of action of the vertical force on a form from liquid concrete being poured into it.

Homework

2 1. A 125 mL cube of solid oak is held submerged by a tether as shown. Calculate the actual force of the water on the bottom surface of the cube and the tension in the tether. (20 pts)

2. Determine the gage pressure in psig at point a if liquid A has SG = 0.75 and liquid B has SG = 1.20. The liquid surrounding point a is water and the tank on the left is open to the atmosphere. (15 pts)

7.73 X 103 Pa * (1.450 X 10-4 psi/Pa) = 1,12 psi

3. Water flows downward along a pipe that is inclined at 30o below the horizontal as shown. Derive an algebraic expression for the pressure difference. Evaluate the pressure difference if L = 5 ft and h = 6 in. (15 pts)

4. A plane gate of uniform thickness holds back a depth of water as shown. Find the minimum weight needed to hold the gate closed. (15 pts) FRyR = W L/2cos 30o W =( FRyR)/L/2 cos 30o FR = hcA hc = L/2*sin 30o = 1.5 * sin 30o A = 6 FR = 9.8 X 103 N/m3 * 1.5 sin 30o * 2X 3 = 44100 N yR = Ixc/yc*A + yc yc = 1.5 Ixc = 1/12*2 * 3^3 = 4.5 yR = 4.5/(1.5*6) + 1.5 = 2 W = (44100*2)/(1.5*cos 30o) = 68 kN

5. Liquid concrete is poured into the form shown (R = 0.313 m). The form is 4.25 wide normal to the diagram. Compute the magnitude and line of action of the vertical force exerted on the form by the concrete. (20 pts) a) W = 2.5*1000kg/m3*9.8 m/s2 * /4*(.313)2*4.25 = 8008 N P*A = 2.5*1000*9.8*.313 *(.313*4.25)= 10201 N = F1 FV = F1 W = 2.19 kN b) sum the moments R/2*F1 = 4/3*R/3*W + XR * Fv 1598 = 1065 + xR(2190) xR = .243
