EXPERIMENT 1A (Ii) :: Cc205 Lab Mechanics of Structures

This experiment examines how shear forces vary at different cut positions of a beam under various loading conditions. The objective is to calculate shear forces experimentally and compare them to theoretical calculations. The apparatus includes a digital force display, hanger, ballast, and ruler. The procedure measures shear forces at different beam positions as loads are applied and cut positions are varied. Forces are recorded and shear forces and bending moments are calculated experimentally and theoretically to compare results.

EXPERIMENT 1A[ii]:
Shear Force Variation with for Various Loading Condition

OBJECTIVE :
This experiment examines how shear forces varies at the cut position of the beam for various loading conditions.

THEORY:
We know that if a body or object of any sort is stationary, then the forces on it balance, as follows: 1. Vertical equilibrium (total force up = total force down) 2. Horizontal equilibrium ( total force right = total force left) 3. Moment equilibrium (total clockwise moment = total anticlockwise moment) We will use the statement: The shear force at the cut is equal to the algebraic sum of the forces acting to the left or right of the cut. The bending moment at the cut is equal to the algebraic sum of the moments caused by the forces acting to the left or right of the cut.

PROCEDURE:
i. Check the Digital Force Display meter reads zero with no load.

ii.

Measure the first position(260mm)

iii.

Carefully load the beam with the hangers in the position, using the loads indicated.

iv. v. vi.

Record the Digital Force Display reading in a table. Shear forces at the cut [N] = Displayed forces Calculate the support ( the cut. and ) and calculate the theoretical shear force at

vii. viii.

Repeat the procedure with the beam loaded. Convert the mass into a load (in N).
