Tio Siaw Li (22) 5D Activity 1 Carbon Dioxide

They had asked people to take mass transit when possible and to replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, making your home more energy efficient, and buy only energy efficient appliances. Recycle things and plant trees. At home

The Department of Health is producing a leaflet for the public later this year. The leaflet will be explaining the possible health effects and what action the public can take to reduce exposure at home.

Plastic bags After you have bought your things at the supermarket, you can put your things into the plastic bag. Newspapers You can recycle newspapers by selling them to the rag-and-bone man. Old books If you have old books/textbooks that you do not want, you can give them away all donate them to a school. Unwanted clothes If you found out that there are some clothes that you cannot wear, you can give them to someone that is younger than you. Toys If there some toys that you do not want, you can donate them to children charity all give them away.

Activity 3

Activity 4 Rats They are harmful and spread diseases to other people. Cockroach They feed on human and pet food, and can leave an offensive odour. Flies They are harmful and spread diseases to other people.

Tio Siaw Li (22) 5D Activity 6 Keep showers to less than 5 minutes and turn off the tap while soaping. Use half flush for liquid waste. Wash vegetables and dishes in a filled sink instead of a running

Activity 7 The first barrier is the conventional wastewater treatment process whereby the used water is treated to globally recognized standards in the Water Reclamation Plants. The treated used water is passed through membranes to filter out and retained on the membrane surface suspended solids, colloidal particles, disease-causing bacteria, some viruses and protozoan cysts. The filtered water that goes through the membrane contains only dissolved salts and organic molecules. Next, a semi-permeable membrane is used. The semi-permeable membrane has very small pores which only allow very small molecules like water molecules to pass through. Consequently, undesirable contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, nitrate, chloride, sulphate, disinfection by-products, aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides etc, cannot pass through the membrane. Hence, NEWater is free from viruses and bacteria and contains very low levels of salts and organic matters. At this stage, the water is already of a high grade water quality. Lastly, ultraviolet is used to ensure that all organisms are inactivated and the purity of the product water guaranteed. With the addition of some alkaline chemicals to restore the acid-alkali or pH balance, the NEWater is now ready.

Uses of NEWater

Used for wafer fabrication processes in manufacturing processes Air-con cooling towers in commercial buildings.

Tio Siaw Li (22) 5D Activity 8 They suck blood from human beings and also transmitted a number of dangerous diseases like malaria, filaria, chikungunya and dengue. Potential breeding places Old tires Used cans Buckets Barrels

Activity 13 At home potential breeding places are: Plant plates You must change the water in the plant plate regularly. Buckets After using a bucket, you should pour out all the water and turn the bucket down. Vases You should change the water in the vases regularly.

Activity 14 The wastewater passes through the wastewater treatment facility. Wastewater is treated at the wastewater treatment plants before it is permitted to be released back to the environment. Wastewater treatment plants helps nature to defend water from excessive pollution. After that, they separate and remove solid matter from liquid waste. Large objects which could block tank inlets are removed during the screening process. Grit chamber is used to slow down the wastewater flow and the grit is allowed to fall out. Solids are settled out in a sedimentation tank and are pumped away. Next, wastewater is exposed to aerobic bacteria. Aerobic bacteria are used to break down pathogens, other contaminants and suspended organic matter. There is an increase in the number of wastewater treatment facilities that employ a tertiary treatment process. Tertiary treatment involves removing nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen from wastewater. The removal of nutrients is an important step.
