Five Things, a Letter, and Edmodo


Welcome to Honors/ESOL/Biology A! Your first assignment is two-part. PART ONE is to write me a short letter to tell me about yourself. Below are the options that you have for the subject of your letter. CHOOSE ONE! Option 1: - five quick Option 2:

facts about you as a student,

- four groups/labels that you identify with (and WHY), Option 3: - three activities you enjoy outside of your job (as a student), Option 4: two words that others would use to describe you and whether or not you agree with those words (and WHY), Option 5: one thing you hope to have accomplished by the end WHY). You can hand-write your letter (which I prefer) or type it. If you hand-write it, the letter should be about one page (front and back) on loose-leaf paper. If you choose to type the letter, it should be about one page (front) in 10-12 point font double-spaced. My letter to you for option 1 is below and continues onto the back. I included notes on the components of a proper letter in case a reminder is necessary. You should not include these notes in your letter, but you should include the components. If youd like more examples on how to approach this assignment, additional examples are available on Edmodo.

date 8/26/2013 Dear students, greeting Welcome to Honors/ESOL/Biology with me, Ms. Le! We have a lot to cover this semester, so we should hit the ground running. I believe that a happy teacher = a happy student; the reverse is also true. To help you learn how to keep me happy, read on below. If you would like to teach me how to keep you happy, you can respond to this letter with option 1. 1. I am a neat freak and I do mean freak. I like the desks in my classroom to be lined up on the tile lines, chairs to be pushed in, and window blinds to be as close to a straight angle as possible. I always spend way too much time on silly things like these, but I find organization calming and disorganization drives me into a frenzy. 2. I love science. It has been my favorite subject in school, probably since the third

grade. I especially enjoy talking about the workings of the universe (BUT HOW CAN SPACE NOT HAVE AN END?) and the cell (HOW CAN SOMETHING SO TINY AND ABIOTIC CONTROL OUR EVERY ACTION?). Science is so cool and so mind-blowing. 3. I dont like excuses. I prefer plans for improvement. We should never let our circumstances decide our failures or accomplishments. 4. I can see your future. By the end of this semester, I will have spent over 70 hours with you in class (and over 350 hours with all of my classes!). In that time, I will develop a decent estimation of your potential and whether or not youre living up to it, so lets try our best to be as amazing as we can be. 5. I think reducing, reusing, and recycling are important. One of my biggest pet peeves as a teacher is when people around me do not turn off classroom lights, print back and front, or recycle paper. This is why I strongly dislike making unnecessary copies of worksheets or quizzes. I am not one to make many extra print-outs. Help me out, dont be an Earth-hater dont lose your papers and recycle them when the time comes. If I sound like a pretty neurotic person, its because I am. But, I also love teaching I think it is one of the coolest, most important jobs in the world and every day I am learning how to be a better teacher. I had several fantastic, phenomenal teachers growing up and I hope to be as great as they are in the future. PART TWO is to set up an Edmodo account. Edmodo is a website designed to create an online classroom community. You can think of it as Facebook, Quizlet, and Edline (minus the grades) in one. Once you set up your Edmodo account, you will be able to access class alerts, notes, electronic copies of assignments, and homework quizzes. Choose your own username and password, enter your email, first name, last name, and agree to the TOS and Privacy Policy 4. Click Sign up See you online!
