ve heard it many times in my two years as editor of Cleaner: the people are what make this industry. Its apparent every February at the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo, and it comes through in the pages of this magazine every month. Ive met a lot of great people, some of whom Ive written about and some who have simply shown the generosity to reach out and talk, explain their place in the industry and what the magazine means to them. Mike Williams from Just Drains in Philadelphia immediately comes to mind, as does Baron Van Burems from No Clogg Sewer & Drain in Pasadena, Calif. This year I had the pleasure of meeting Jeff Goldade, his wife, Sarah, and his young daughter at the Expo. We talked for a while and I eventually followed up with him to do a feature story on his business, Sewer Duck of Aberdeen, S.D. That story, Quest to be the Best, appears in this issue.
Goldade, in his words, has been cleaning sewer and drain lines since he was just a pup. His dad formed the business, and Jeff bought him out and took over at just 19 years old. As I mentioned, Ive met a lot of great people and had a hand in putting together some really good stories about the people of this industry, but reading through the Sewer Duck story for the first time I was really struck by the wonderful honesty, earnestness and perspective Jeff has. Its fun to edit stories
The people are what make this industry. Its apparent every February at the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo, and it comes through in the pages of this magazine every month.
like this. Its fun to read them, and its very satisfying to be able to work with people of that caliber and to share their stories with the rest of the industry. The Roto-Rooter of Syracuse (Bauer Plumbing) profile in this issue is another great example of true professionals forming the backbone of the industry. While its a franchise the oldest Roto-Rooter in the country, in fact Bauer Plumbing began 125 years ago and has been a family business ever since. The industry is filled with so many great family businesses, and few have a longer or more proud tradition than Bauer Plumbing. Its not just about family businesses, however. I got a call last week from a gentleman in Middletown, Ohio, wanting to talk about the magazine and his business. Hes been cleaning drains for a long time, but only jumped in full time a few years ago. He told me about his business and the kinds of jobs he typically tackles in his one-man operation. He also talked about Cleaner, and how reading the magazine has given him a lot of insight and helped him build his business. But what I was most struck by was how he described his life story and how he came to be in the business. It was more than most people would tell someone they were talking to for the first time. I appreciated his story and the fact that he felt comfortable explaining it all to me, due in part to his connection with the magazine. So, while you certainly need to know what to consider when purchasing a CCTV van, as Jim Aanderud discusses in this issue, and how to prepare for the unexpected, covered in this months Better Business column, it really is the people who make this industry and this magazine. Enjoy this months issue. C

lished plumbing company would survive for five generations. Now 125 years later, Bauer Plumbing Roto-Rooter in Syracuse, N.Y. has stood the test of time, emerging as the number one emergency plumbing service provider in Onondaga County and the oldest Roto-Rooter franchise in the nation.
The original company offered a variety of services to local neighborhoods, including plumbing, steam fitting, pumps, sinks and tin roofing. Over time, the companys focus turned to plumbing for residential and commercial customers in a broader territory. The company is now under the leadership of the fourth generation, Christine Bauer-Armstrong and her husband, Mark Armstrong. In 1937, Christines father, Donald, and his father traveled to Rochester to see a newly introduced piece of equipment called the Roto-Rooter, which was made with a washing machine motor that turned a basket with a cable in it. They also learned about a new franchise available in the Syracuse area and thought it was the next great thing to secure the future of the business. With the purchase of the franchise, Bauer Plumbing could expand its offerings to do more drain and sewer line cleaning. Previously, pipes had to be removed and the ground was dug by hand, says Mark Armstrong, president. The drain cleaning equipment changed everything and opened up a new area for the company to take care of customers who

Roto-Rooter is known worldwide, and even young people know the jingle, which I remember hearing growing up, Armstrong says. The popularity of the company pleasing customers worldwide is a benefit. When people move from coast to coast, they know the brand from another place and know it has a great reputation. The Roto-Rooter name is a huge asset to our family. knows the company cant rest on its laurels. Strong customer service is still important to growing the business. If the customers needs arent being met, there would be no company for us, Armstrong says. We are proud of how long weve been affiliated with RotoRooter and our family business, but we know we cant rely on the name. FAMILY SUCCESSION After finishing college in the mid-1980s, Donalds youngest daughter, Christine, helped fill a temporary position in the office. Around that same time, Christines husband, Mark, was asked to join the company to provide the expertise he gained while working on historical rebuilds and new construction. Before then, Christine had never intended to go into the family business. When we first started, we werent looking down the road expecting to be there a long time, Armstrong says. We evolved into it. We worked hard and tried to make the business a better place for all the employees and customers we served. Thats what were still doing today. Mark and Christine now serve as president and vice president of Bauer Plumbing. Their children, the fifth generation, have been getting involved in the company. Son Brandon, 23, who is attending law school at Syracuse University, started working in the garage and cleaning the workshop when he was a teen, eventually going on jobs with service technicians. Now he contributes to business development, helping with the companys Facebook page and internet advertising when he isnt in school. In their free time, daughters Ashleigh, 20,

a college student, and Aryanna, 15, a high school student, help in the office by dispatching technicians, handling purchase orders and billing. At this point, its uncertain whether the next generation will continue in the family business, and Christine and Mark choose not to pressure them into it. I think the kids like it. They grew up with it and enjoy the atmosphere, Armstrong says. But we told them to get an education first and find out what theyre going to do. We dont push this place to them. They all come in and do their part, but we dont know where it will end up. Who knows what the future holds for them and our company?

AT THE READY Although the company installed more new construction plumbing in its earlier years, Armstrong saw a greater need for emergency service in the area, and today they focus on 24/7 emergency plumbing repairs and drain and sewer cleaning.
The way we look at it, were not just here to do the work today. We want to build a relationship so customers have the same service technician year after year.
Mark Armstrong
When people want something done now, the timeframe doesnt matter, Armstrong says. It isnt 9 to 5. The world we live in is more immediate, more right here and now. They dont feel like waiting and will call three competitors to see who gets there first. We need to respond quickly and be the leader, so we make sure we arent busy doing other things and can strictly focus on emergency service. Although emergency service makes scheduling staff difficult, Armstrong says employees are never standing around for long. During downtime, the staff cleans and maintains equipment and vehicles. The company currently has five Chevy 1/4-ton service vans and a Chevy

Each service van has a Roto- Service technician Rick Cashman looks for a pipe Rooter 9000 drain cleaner (for 3-inch up to 10- dropping over the mainline inch pipes at 250 feet) and a Roto-Rooter 5000 to determine where he will drain cleaner (for 1 1/4- up to 4-inch pipes at need to jet to in a hospital basement in Downtown 100 feet), as well as five RIDGID KJ1750 water Syracuse. (Irving Avenue) jetters. The company also has two RIDGID 100-foot SeeSnake video inspection systems, one 200-foot SeeSnake, and several RIDGID NaviTrack Scout line locators. For bigger projects, technicians use a US Jetting trailer-mounted water jetter with a 300-gallon tank that provides 18 gpm at 4000 psi. Customers cant wait because every call is an emergency. We need the equipment to do the work or we could lose it to the competition, Armstrong says.
Rick Cashman uses a mirror to cast light down a residential pipe in East Syracuse. Reflected sunlight illuminates better then a flashlight.
Two more 300 gpm trailer-mounted water jetters are also being added to the fleet. Although Armstrong considered a larger-capacity jetter, the higher pressure units available today make it easier to complete a job with less water. The 300-gallon trailer unit wont put too much wear and tear on the vans, Armstrong says. We drag it around in the winter and there are many hills in this area, so we dont want to put more stress on the service vans. We get outstanding pressure with less water volume, but I stay away from anything under 18 gallons per minute. Im a fan of using more water. The company is also looking to build future business by getting back into excavating and adding a vacuum truck to its fleet. (continued)

RECESSION RECOVERY The company posted a consistently strong performance over the last several decades, but it took a hard hit in 2009 due to the recession, with a 20 percent profit loss. Customers both commercial and residential held off longer on plumbing and drain fixes, or attempted to do the work themselves. Plus, when the housing market abruptly stopped, tradesmen, especially those trained in heating and AC, flooded the plumbing market. Suddenly, there were more people doing plumbing work but fewer jobs available. Despite the hard times, the company didnt lay off any workers and has been able to build profits back to its pre-recession levels. Over the last four years, the company saw slow and steady growth due to partnerships, consistent quality and strong advertising. Roto-Rooter has built relationships with property management companies that serve the maintenance needs for retail properties such as restaurant chains, stores and malls. Armstrong seeks out property managers to become
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS A clean image gives potential customers peace of mind, which helps build loyalty. Roto-Rooter has a strict policy that all technicians be in blue uniforms and have clean white vans. If the person knocking at the door is in a ripped T-shirt and dirty jeans, a customer may be worried about the job getting done, Armstrong says. They want to know hes from a reputable company that they can call back if there is a problem. The look is as important as the knowledge. Many of the service technicians at Roto-Rooter have been with the company for five to seven years, so they have built trusting relationships with customers, sometimes being requested by name. Building long-term relationships is at the core of the companys customer service philosophy. The way we look at it, were not just here to do the work today. We want to build a relationship so customers have the same service technician year after year, Armstrong says. Customers can be comfortable with that person in their home. Depending on the emergency, they might be willing to wait because they want that technician, Armstrong says. I really like that. Aggressive advertising has helped the company stay top of mind, even during slow periods. The company has advertised on radio, billboards, television, magazines, newspapers, the Internet and phone books, often using high-value coupons to attract customers. We are getting a lot of new business. We do mass mailings to send information and coupons to touch everyone so they know who we are, Armstrong says. With our 24/7 availability, we know they may not need us right now, but we want to make sure they know who we are when a problem comes up. If theyve heard of us and know weve been here forever, they remember us and give us a call. C

their plumber of choice for servicing a variety of locations. After a long history of quality work, many area plumbers also call on the company to subcontract their sewer, drain and pipeline cleaning, even though they may be considered competitors. The area plumbers trust us and know who we are, so they may refer us to their customers, and they know we wont attempt to take their customers, Armstrong says.

The right CCTV inspection van for the drain-cleaning company down the street may not be the right choice for your business. Its important to identify what you need and to understand how inspection Service options are usually limited to manufacturers and equipment differs among manufacturers. LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIP The major difference among manufacturers, and in my opinion the most important, is the service they provide. Buying an inspection van isnt like buying a car. There are hundreds of places you can take your personal vehicle to be repaired. And contact with the car manufacturer normally ceases once you drive it off the lot. This is not the case with CCTV inspection vans. You enter into a longterm relationship with the manufacturer, and in most cases the distributor, too. Pipeline inspection equipment needs regular service. Equipment will break down whether its new or old. You are operating sensitive and expensive electronic equipment that is being introduced into a very hostile environment. In addition, you entrust equipment to employees who may not treat it as carefully as they should.
distributors. Your relationship with them can dictate the success or failure of your pipeline inspection program.
Ask the manufacturer or distributor these questions: Where is the repair facility located? What repairs can the local distributor make? At what point does equipment need to be shipped to the manufacturer? What is the expected turnaround time for repairs? If the repair is going to take awhile, are loaners available so crews can keep working? Waiting a week or more for equipment to be returned after its shipped across the country for a repair is unacceptable. You need a quick turnaround time to get your crews back to work. You should be assured that equipment will be serviced as quickly and efficiently as possible with minimal downtime. The above questions should be answered before purchasing any equipment. Once you own it, the service options are limited. Make sure the service agreement you are entering into is acceptable and agreed to in writing. SAFETY FIRST
hen you work with something every day, its easy to become a bit lax when it comes to simple precautions to minimize the risk of injury or illness. Working with human waste brings with it several health risks that, while they may be rare, could be severe. Tetanus, salmonella, viral hepatitis, E. coli, leptospirosis, and parasites like Giardia and Cryptosporidium are the most common threats from raw sewage, but there are several others. Illnesses resulting from exposure can be life threatening or life altering, such as: Tetanus Painful muscle contractions, including lockjaw that can make it difficult to open your mouth or swallow. Death is possible through suffocation, but it is treatable, and a vaccine can prevent tetanus. Adults should get a booster every 10 years or after a bad cut or burn.
It doesnt take much to be exposed when working with raw sewage, but it likewise doesnt take much to prevent that exposure.
Salmonella Diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps. Symptoms can be severe and cause hospitalization. The infection may spread to the blood stream and through the rest of the body, which can cause death. It can also lead to chronic arthritis. Viral hepatitis (mainly B and C) Swelling of the liver that can cause many complications, including liver scarring and cirrhosis. Viral hepatitis is the leading cause of liver cancer and the most common reason for the need for liver transplants, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

E. coli Diarrhea, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness, pneumonia and other symptoms and illnesses. It is a common cause of food poisoning. It can lead to life-threatening kidney failure. Leptospirosis Kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, respiratory distress and death. Symptoms can be mistaken for other diseases, and some people have no symptoms. Giardia and Crypto Intestinal illness including diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramps. The worst epidemic of cryptosporidium cases in the U.S. happened in Wisconsin in 1993, resulting in 400,000 illnesses and 60 deaths. It doesnt take much to be exposed when working with raw sewage, but it likewise doesnt take much to prevent that exposure. The Center for Construction Research and Training warns that workers should assume that contamination is present anytime they are working near wastewater and use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure. Among its guidelines: Use liquid-proof gloves, boots and eye/face protection when in direct contact with raw sewage. Face shields should be used where splashing is anticipated. Skin protection is especially important if skin is chapped, burned, cut or otherwise damaged. Puncture-resistant gloves should be used when working with items that may cause cuts. Wash reusable clothing commercially at high temperatures (160 F) to ensure that all organisms are destroyed. Contaminated clothing and PPE should be kept away from eating and food storage areas. Wash hands and face regularly with soap and water, especially before eating, smoking and drinking. Keep hands out of nose, mouth, eyes and ears. Keep fingernails short. Shower daily. Store and consume food only in designated areas. Clean, treat and report any cuts or punctures immediately. Consider all wounds as potentially infected. While OSHA doesnt consider raw sewage as a regulated waste product, it does require employers to protect workers from hazards and infectious material, such as with proper personal protective equipment and by communicating with workers about workplace hazards. Simple steps can protect you from illness and injury; the most important part always being aware when it comes to safety on the job. C

inspect the whole pipe. The entire video is processed to provide an easy-to-read, lay-flat view of the inside of the pipeline, making defects simple to spot. One technician can handle the entire process. The system integrates easily to multi-conductor or single-conductor Aries systems, and captures industry-standard NTSC high-definition video files for full motion viewing. The lack of moving camera parts also improves reliability. Its a great combination of our new and existing hardware and software, says McGrew. The camera is higher resolution than weve ever used before, and the software is cutting-edge, so the final record is extremely accurate. Between that and no longer having to treat the pipeline defect by defect, municipalities and contractors will see a big increase in consistency and productivity. McGrew said that several of Aries Industries longtime customers were excited to see the PM6000 prototype in Indianapolis. A few knew weve been working on a side-scanning camera, and our booth was the first place they stopped in Indy, says McGrew. We sold several units right there at the show, and have many other interested parties to follow up with. We were excited to gauge the reaction from the crowd, and it actually exceeded our expectations. Everyone in our Indy crew is pleased. 800/2347205; www.ariesindustries.com. C

SOUTH DAKOTA CLEANING CONTRACTOR LEARNS IMPORTANT LESSONS ABOUT HARD WORK AND DIVERSIFICATION WHILE BUILDING A BUSINESS AND A LIFE
BY KEN WYSOCKY
When Jeff Goldade was about 11 years old, he would reluctantly help out his father, Lyle, who owned Sewer Duck Inc., a drain-cleaning business in Aberdeen, S.D.
I did what I could to get out of it, Goldade admits. But my dad was a single parent, and the only way for him to keep an eye on me was to take me along on jobs. So Ive been cleaning drains since I was a little pup. What a difference 25 years can make. Today, Goldade, 36, is the enthusiastic owner of Sewer Duck, which he bought from his father in 1996 when he was just 19 years old. (I have no idea how he came up with the name, but Id never change it, he says.) He employs five full-time technicians and four part-timers, owns about $300,000 worth of vehicles and equipment and runs a fully diversified business, focused on drain cleaning, portablerestroom rentals/service and septic-tank pumping. Moreover, by staying abreast of new technology, emphasizing professionalism and customer service, and developing some solid business chops courtesy of the school of hard knocks his company now generates about 900 percent more in annual gross income than his first year in business. Things changed the older I got I developed a different outlook, Goldade recalls, explaining how his attitude toward drain-cleaning work changed. I had to think about having a future. I wanted to be successful. I grew up with very little I didnt want to be poor and not send my kid to college. Since college and the military wasnt for me, I saw this as a way to be in charge of my own destiny. DIVERSIFICATION KEYS GROWTH Diversification keyed Sewer Ducks growth. The companys business volume is split just about evenly between restrooms, drain cleaning and septic pumping, and their seasonal cycles dovetail well, which helps keep cash

flow more consistent year-round. Septic pumping dominates spring and fall, restroom rentals contribute revenue primarily in summer and drain-cleaning work remains steady all year, although winters can be problematic at times, he notes. Offering multiple services offers other benefits, too; it gives Goldade greater control over time spent on jobs, enhances customer service and promotes repeat business and word-of-mouth referrals. We can give every customer multiple options, Goldade explains. I didnt want to be that guy who only pumps out septic tanks, then has to call someone else in and wait whenever a drainfield line plugs up. Sewer Duck entered the portable-restroom business because only one competitor existed. Goldade bought three restrooms in 1998, then three turned into six and six turned into nine, as he puts it. Then I started ordering 10 and 12 at a time, mostly for construction jobs.

Thorough job training ensures that all employees can cross over into different roles as required by demand. For instance, during most of 2010, Sewer Duck supplied almost 100 restrooms for a year-long oil pipeline project, almost one restroom every mile for 100 miles. With twice-a-week cleanings, that effectively kept one employee dedicated to just that route for the duration of the project.
We can give every customer multiple options. I didnt want to be that guy who only pumps out septic tanks, then has to call someone else in and wait whenever a drainfield line plugs up.
Jeff Goldade
At the time, we had a slide-in unit with a 250-gallon waste and a 150-gallon freshwater tank, and it would take our guy two or three days to work the entire route, then hed start over again, Goldade says. That required techs from the septic side of the business to pitch in on the other regular restroom routes. LARGE ARRAY OF EQUIPMENT Providing multiple services requires an array of equipment. Sewer Duck owns a 2011 Hino 268A truck with a 1,200-gallon steel tank, built by Satellite
Industries and equipped with a pump made by Masport Inc. and a 65-gallon freshwater tank. Its used for industrial jobs, such as cleaning carwash pits and grain elevators. To carry drain-cleaning equipment, technicians drive a 2008 Chevrolet Express cargo van and a 2013 Chevrolet Express cargo van. I didnt want to pull up to jobs in a crummy-looking conversion van or a panel van with three on the tree, he says. And I lettered them up so they look nice. The company also relies on drain-cleaning equipment made by General Pipe Cleaners (a division of General Wire Spring Co.): two JM-1450 portable

also owns 140 portable restrooms made by Satellite, including five handicapped-accessible units and six VIP units with solar lights and handwash stations, plus three freestanding Satellite handwash units. Goldade says he prefers small tanks and trucks, even though the mostly rural area that Sewer Duck services is spread out geographically. Thats because hes able to apply septic waste on land he owns as well as acreage owned by local farmers, and the Aberdeen municipal waste-treatment plant is only a mile from the companys shop. Its all very convenient, he notes. Plus, if my trucks exceed 26,000 pounds, my drivers need a commercial drivers license [CDL]. Then its harder to find guys capable of driving them, plus you need a bigger garage or shop to store the larger trucks. And I want to have my guys able to do any job at any given time. What if I have just one guy with a CDL and he calls in sick, and the only guy available to fill in doesnt have one? Then Im stuck. On the drain-cleaning end of the business, Goldade says business is split about evenly between residential and commercial/industrial work. The latter includes everything
water jetters (1,500 psi at 1.7 gpm), a Maxi-Rooter, a Speedrooter 91, four Mini-Rooters for smaller drains and three hand-held Power-Vees. The company also owns a RIDGID K-7500 drain cleaner and a RIDGID SeeSnake and pipeline locator. Goldade calls the SeeSnake a game changer worth its weight in gold. At first, it was a great training tool that helped him see clogs and understand what happens and why. Equally as important, it also provides visual proof of a problem for skeptical customers. And it enables his crews to be absolutely certain a drainline is completely cleaned. Its hard to guarantee your work if you cant see that you fixed the problem, he says. Eliminating the guesswork enabled us to provide a whole other level of customer service. How do you put a price on that? Plus we can charge an additional flat rate for it on top of the regular cleaning flat rate. SMALLER TRUCKS DO THE TRICK To clean portable restrooms, the company relies on a 2006 International with a 1,250-gallon wastewater/250-gallon freshwater steel tank, made by Imperial Industries Inc. and equipped with a Masport pump; and a 2012 Chevrolet 1-ton pickup truck with a 650-gallon wastewater/250-gallon freshwater chassis-mounted steel tank made by Satellite Industries. from apartment buildings to plants to a local hospital. Sewer Duck also has a regular gig cleaning a 500-footlong stretch of main sewer pipe at a local industrial plant. The company runs a machine that extrudes cotton fibers, Goldade explains. If the line isnt cleaned regularly, it plugs, and if they have to shut the machine down, it costs them a lot of money. So regular maintenance pays off for them.

GROWING PAINS FORCED CHANGES Growth is great, but its not the end-all, especially if it occurs too fast. Goldade found that out the hard way when the company won a bid to become a contract operator for a sanitary district outside Aberdeen. One thing led to another, and within a span of about 12 years, Goldade found himself with 15 or 16 employees, and handling maintenance operations for about a half dozen districts, mostly located around lakes. Within those districts, Sewer Duck was responsible for maintaining more than 700 lift stations located in the various districts independent sewer and water systems, which empty into sewage lagoons. At one point, I realized the business had grown too big for me, he says. There was a lot more liability and responsibility and more politics than I was willing to deal with. So we downsized. These days, my paycheck is the same as it was back then, but I sleep a lot better, he continues. Sometimes less is more, you know? At the time, I thought getting bigger would be better. Sure, we made extra money, but most of it went to paying more wages. Now I have less than half as many employees and

my wife, Sara, and I and our child can spend time in Florida during winters. I do everything on my terms and life is good. Not that growth is entirely out of the question, as long as its slow and manageable, Goldade emphasizes. When the company grew in leaps and bounds, I couldnt keep up with growing pains, he says. It was a wild ride. But if we can take what were doing right now and maintain it for the rest of the time, Id be OK with that. But I dont think we want to stop growing completely, he concludes. I always want to be the best provide the best technology, the best service, the best equipment and the best employees. And to do all that, you cant ever stop working on it. Theres always room for improvement. I dont want to ever lower my expectations.

rozen pipelines are a big problem during long winters in the fivecounty area that Snowbridge Inc. services around Breckenridge, Colo. Luckily, company technicians can handle whatever Mother Nature throws at them, thanks to a US Jetting Inc. 4025 truck-mounted water jetter enclosed inside an insulated, heated box body. In a tough job scenario, the unit which generates 4,000 psi at 25 gpm twice thawed about 1,200 feet of a sanitation districts 4-inch force main that runs between a treatment plant and lift station, says Bill Tatro, co-owner of Snowbridge. We did that two years in a row, Tatro says. The first time it took about four days, doing 400- and 500-foot runs. The second time, it took us about two days, partially because they dug up a section that time, plus wed already figured out the best hose-and-head combination and which manholes to use. Snowbridge, which performs residential and commercial drain-cleaning work as well as septic tank pumping, purchased its first 4025 unit back in 1992. The company bought this newer one about six years ago when the truck that carried the first unit reached the end of its life cycle. The newer unit is housed in a 14-foot box body, made by Supreme Corp., and mounted on a 2007 Sterling Acterra truck chassis. The truck carries a 600-gallon water tank and an onboard heater, powered by the trucks diesel engine, keeps the hoses thawed and ready to work.

My office is at 9,500 feet elevation, and we regularly see temperatures of 10 and 20 below zero, Tatro notes. In our older truck, which we now use as a backup unit, the jetter was enclosed but there wasnt any heater. So a lot of times, youd get to a job and find the hose frozen. The heater in the newer truck takes care of that problem. Tatro says hes sold on the 4025 not only because it can handle small and large jobs, but because it also provides many productivity benefits. Take the units twin reels, for instance, which allow crews to eliminate timeconsuming hose changes for different job applications. One reel carries a 1/2-inch hose for larger, mainline cleanings; the other one carries a 3/8-inch

very large about a 100-mile radius around Breckenridge. The only ways to get in or out of our county are via mountain passes or tunnels its mountain driving in snow almost all the time. The truck also carries three RIDGID pipeline-inspection push cameras and two small Roto-Rooter-brand cable drain-cleaning machines. Technicians also use nozzles made by Shamrock Pipe Tools Inc. and Warthog nozzles from StoneAge Inc. Tatro estimates that the jetter generates 30 to 40 percent of the companys revenue, noting that many times, two crews use the truck in one day: one during the day and another at night. Its our mechanics job to give all our trucks nicknames, Tatro says. He nicknamed this one Rock Star, because it can do everything. Its definitely a profit center for us were always trying to stay on the cutting edge of the newest technology, so we always have the kind of equipment that can fix whatever problems customers might have. This truck does just that. C

hose for smaller lines, and an adaptor allows technicians to quickly switch to 1/4-inch hose, Tatro says. Sometimes we use both size hoses on the same job, like for a big hotel where we do maintenance jetting four times a year, he explains. It saves us a lot of time because we dont have to continually take hoses apart.

Bill Tatro
Or say its winter, he continues. We can send out one truck and perform a variety of jobs like unclogging a 4-inch pipe and then working on a frozen 12-inch-diameter culvert pipe without changing out hoses. When youre talking about 300 to 500 feet of hose that you might have to reel out [to change hose sizes], where it might freeze, it easily saves us a couple hours a day. That adds up over the course of a year. The units versatility also saves on labor, fuel and general vehicle wear and tear because Snowbridge can send out one truck to do different kinds of work, as opposed to sending out two trucks. Moreover, the trucks gross vehicle weight is 25,500 pounds, which is just under the point where drivers would need a commercial driving license. As such, during bad weather, the truck isnt subject to chain laws, which saves time because technicians dont have to stop and install chains on tires unless conditions require them, Tatro says. The truck also has traction control on the rear differential that works great in the snow, he adds. Its not quite four-wheel drive but the traction control works really great. Thats huge, because our territory is geographically

CONTRACTOR PROVIDES A CURED-IN-PLACE SOLUTION FOR ILLINOIS HIGH SCHOOLS SEWER ODOR PROBLEMS BY SCOTTIE DAYTON
trong sewer odors permeating Franklin (Ill.) High School triggered complaints to Maintenance Superintendent Darrin Seymour. He knew the problem stemmed from cracks in a 6-inch ductile iron main. The 205-foot-long pipe hung in a utility corridor beneath the main hallway, but most of the line was under 4 feet of backfill. Searching for rehabilitation options on the Internet led Seymour to SLB Pipe Solutions in Bedford, Ind. The situation was bad, says SLB co-owner Eric Spreen. We pushed our RIDGID SeeSnake upstream through the 6-inch cleanout in the boiler room, but couldnt see much. The line was so occluded that forward progress stopped at 100 feet and we had to guess at the rest. Working after hours, Spreens team used cured-in-place pipe from PermaLiner Industries to successfully rehabilitate the oldest main in the original section of the school.

PROJECT:
CUSTOMER: CONTRACTOR: EQUIPMENT: RESULTS:
CLASSIC CURRICULUM Seymour hired Rooter-Man/Sani Systems in Modesto, Ill., to clean the line. Technician Dave Buhl used a trailer-mounted OBrien 3515 sewer jetter with 400 feet of 3/4-inch hose, a 15 gpm/3,500 psi pump and two AquaNOZ nozzles from Arthur Products Co. Beginning at the manhole in the parking lot, Buhl jetted upstream at 2,500 psi using one nozzle with forward and rear orifices and another with just rear jets. At 50 feet, Buhl hit a straight tee leading to the boiler room cleanout. After moving the jetter to the service door, Seymour and the SLB crew helped pull the hose inside and guide it around corners to the cleanout. It was the middle of December, so I was very happy to come in out of the cold, says Buhl. The pipe had so much

debris that it took seven hours to clean 152 feet upstream from the cleanout. The effort plumb wore me out.
The situation was bad. We pushed our RIDGID SeeSnake upstream through the 6-inch cleanout in the boiler room, but couldnt see much. The line was so occluded that forward progress stopped at 100 feet and we had to guess at the rest.
Eric Spreen
Meanwhile, Spreens crew brought in the lining components and covered the main corridors floor with plastic. The four of them made a dry run carrying the inversion unit down two flights of stairs and rolling it 100 feet into the boiler room. That familiarized us with how we had to negotiate the stairs and not lose control of the unit, which weighed 200 pounds less without the liner, says
50
Spreen. Once we began mixing resins, we had 45 minutes working time. When Buhl finished at 11 p.m., the team laid out the 102foot liner and impregnated it with hot resin using 100-pound laminate floor rollers. The labor-intensive trip to the boiler room went smoothly. We shot the liner in three minutes at 10 to 12 psi, says Spreen. Then we shot the calibration tube through the liner, monitored the gauges for 90 minutes to make sure pressure held at 13 psi, and went to the hotel. ADDITIONAL HOMEWORK Saturday morning, the crew returned to remove the calibration tube and inspect the liner. Once Seymour saw how well it had rehabilitated the sewer, he added the remaining 103 feet to the contract. Spreen didnt have enough material for the second shot and had to return a few days later.
At least a quarter of the invert was full, enough material to plug the sewer from the cleanout to the manhole. I have never pulled that much material out of a pipe before.
Dave Buhl
Joel Langebartels helps feed the calibration tube into the inversion tube on the job site at Franklin High School in Franklin, Ill.
That Sunday, Buhl set up in the boiler room and cleaned 25 feet before hitting an obstruction. We fought the situation for a while, but the pipe was too encrusted for the hose to pass through it, he says. Spreen suggested sending down the camera head to pull back the jetter. To access the junction of the old sewer main with the new, Seymour sawed a 2- by 2-foot hole in the concrete floor. We hand-dug 4 feet down through backfill to the joint, then opened the pipe downstream of it, says Spreen. The camera revealed a run of 25 feet, then a sweeping 90-degree turn to the right followed by a 53-foot straight stretch and a sweeping 90-degree turn to the left. We just managed to wiggle through the turn, so that had to be our trouble spot, Spreen says.
The pipe ran straight for 25 feet before entering the lined section. When the camera head emerged from the cleanout, Buhl attached his hose with zip ties and duct tape, then Spreen pulled it back and untied the hose. I started jetting and pulling back debris, says Buhl. A rat carcass was in there and multiple cafeteria items. At least a quarter of the invert was full, enough material to plug the sewer from the cleanout to the manhole. I have never pulled that much material out of a pipe before. The work took five hours. PASS WITH FLYING COLORS With Buhl cleaning upstream from the manhole again, Spreens crew wetted out the liner and lubricated it with vegetable oil to facilitate its trip through the bends. They dropped the inversion hose through the access hole into the sewer, and increased pressure to 15 pounds as the liner entered the bends. When inverted, the liner overlapped the first liner by three feet. Leaving the liner to cure overnight, the team returned the next morning to reinstate two 3-inch floor drains and three 4-inch laterals. Seymour guided them to the proper locations in the 4-foot-wide utility corridor. A short length of the downstream main was exposed, enabling workers to see resin oozing from lined 12-inch-long cracks. Most of the corridor was impassable, filled with sprinkler lines, telecommunication cables, power lines, and heating and ventilation pipes hanging from the ceiling. All we could do was army crawl over the backfill, says Spreen. We had about 3 feet of headroom. The only tool that fit into the reinstatement spaces was a flexible shaft powered by an electric Dremel 4000 rotary hand piece (Robert Bosch). Hobbyists use them, says Spreen. Consequently, we wore out a lot of cut-off wheels. It was miserable work because we were in cramped positions and hot, sweaty and dirty. Reinstating the connections took two hours, then the crew joined them to the main with PVC pipe and Fernco PVC couplings. When teachers and students returned from Christmas break, the school was free of sewer odors. C

mong your employees, one or a couple probably stand out. Have you thought about what would happen to your business without these employees? Consider this situation: You have a technician who handles half of your work and is so good with customers that you have a great deal of repeat business and new business. This technician can handle minor equipment repairs, explain pipe inspection results clearly and can handle the business when youre sick. What would happen to your business if this wonderful employee were killed in an auto accident? Obviously you would have to hire a replacement, but it could take a couple of years before the replacement reaches the same level of skill and customer satisfaction. And meanwhile you may lose some business and revenue because you cannot be everywhere. And what about the repairs? You would have the added expense of hiring someone to handle those. All of this would cost your company money, which you may not have or might be hard to come by.

They, too, will have suffered a loss, and their financial condition in the absence of a primary provider may be more stressful than the situation your company is in. Also, a key person policy may be transferred to an employee upon retirement, providing an extra bonus for years of good service to your company. LENGTH OF TERM When you consider this type of insurance, you need to determine the length of the policy term. Key person policies may be either term insurance or permanent (also called whole life or universal life insurance). Permanent insurance remains in force forever. A term policy has a specific end date. The type you choose depends on your circumstances. If you and your key employee are both young and plan to remain together until you retire, permanent insurance may be the way to go. If your key employee plans to retire in 10 years and move out of state, or if in eight

These may make the cost of higher coverage cheaper. For example, you may pay one rate for $450,000 worth of coverage, but if you cross the $500,000 mark, a discount kicks in, lowering premiums below those for the lesser amount of coverage. AVERT DISASTER Key person insurance can help your company withstand disaster and perhaps stay in business, and it can do good for the loved ones of the people you depend on. BETTER BUSINESS
n Jan. 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 was on its way to Charlotte, North Carolina, when, two minutes after takeoff, a flock of Canadian geese flew into the aircraft causing both engines to fail. The passengers braced for impact. As the plane fell from the sky, the freezing waters of the Hudson River came into view and Flight 1549 hit the water at 150 mph. Dave Stockton, a businessman on the plane, said later in a television interview, When you think youre going to die, you start thinking about your life your family, Little League baseball, things like in a movie. All 156 passengers survived the crash in the 36-degree water and their lives were changed forever. This was a totally unexpected occurrence in everyones life that morning. But what was a sure disaster became a much different story than anyone could have imagined. Captain Chesley Sullenberger told Katie Couric in an interview on ABC that, while this emergency was unexpected, he was not unprepared. One way of looking at this might be that for 42 years Ive been making small regular deposits in this bank of experience, education and training. And on January 15 the balance was sufficient so that I could make a very large withdrawal. What was evident to everyone on Flight 1549 was that this captain had spent sufficient time preparing himself for the unexpected. The unexpected occurs every day in our business and personal lives. Those who are wise always expect the unexpected and prepare accordingly. How do you prepare for the unexpected? VALUE EXPERIENCE Every business has a number of experiences, personal and corporate, positive and negative, in its history. It is impossible to run a business without facing and overcoming difficulty. The collective wisdom learned ought to be shared. Rather than forgetting and burying past mistakes, those who are wise will take the time to review and discuss past solutions and new ways to confront problems should they, or any problems similar, come again. This is not about assigning blame, but about discovering what went wrong and why. The corporate memory of senior employees to review problems in the past can help prevent them in the future. The experience of Capt. Sullenberger made the difference in the lives of everyone on board. RETHINK TRAINING In the archives of every business, whether it is entrepreneurial or corporate, big or small, events have occurred that need to be discussed and reviewed with an emphasis on discovering answers to past problems. This is exactly what Capt. Sullenbergers training was all about. He had investigated accidents in the past and understood the fatal flaws that resulted in tragic consequences. Training is not just a special class or attending a seminar.
Rather than forgetting and burying past mistakes, those who are wise will take the time to review and discuss past solutions and new ways to confront problems should they, or any problems similar, come again. This is not about assigning blame, but about discovering what went wrong and why.
Training takes place every day in how you view and carry out your tasks and responsibilities. Safety training is not simply where to find the fire extinguisher, but gaining an understanding of past fires and their causes. EDUCATE EVERYONE It is important to remember that Capt. Sullenberger was not selected for singular education in flight safety but was included in a number of flight safety training programs held throughout his career. What if his age, background or previous educational experiences had disqualified him from training or what if he had decided it was unnecessary at his level of experience? Safety is everyones business and training everyone is in the best interest of every business. MAKE REGULAR DEPOSITS Every day your business has an opportunity to train, motivate and recognize your employees. Helping everyone do the best in whatever job he or she is doing ought to be the function of every manager. Unexpected events do not always occur when leaders are around to make decisions. They can occur on the road, at the job site or in the shop, and thats often the time and place to act. It is those everyday occurrences where confidence and preparation can make a significant difference in the outcomes that affect your employees, shareholders, management team, clients, products and the wellbeing of your business. The unexpected can come from anywhere, at any time. Who could have expected and prepared for a flock of Canadian geese to bring down a modern aircraft? Captain Sullenberger responded by trusting his experience, education and training to guide him in wise and thoughtful action. Taking care of the little details, learning to be observant, and openly discussing problems and issues without any fear is a trait of being successful. Training and experience helps everyone prepare for the unexpected so that when a major crisis comes, a safe landing can be made. C

pivot downward 25 degrees to provide 8 feet of extra digging depth. For added convenience, boom functions can be operated with either a wireless remote or wired pendant. We didnt want in any way to compromise the units hydroexcavation capabilities, Steinbach says. Thats why the Supersucker HDX utilizes the same waterjetting system and articulating boom design that you find on our dedicated Mud Dog hydroexcavator. Measuring 37 feet in length, 15 feet 5 inches in height and 8 feet in width, the vacuum loader/hydroexcavator has single-engine drive, smart CAN bus control system with 8-inch positive displacement vacuum that delivers air flow to 5,800 cfm and 28 inches of vacuum. The single-mode filtration system loads wet or dry material with no changeover required. The 1/4-inch steel collector box holds 18 cubic yards of debris. Body dumping is achieved by a single, heavy-duty, double-acting cylinder that provides a 51-degree dump angle. The body, baghouses and separator chamber hydraulically raise together for quick unloading. The full-opening tailgate with two lift cylinders has a liquid-tight hydraulic latching system to prevent leakage. Latches and hinges are fully adjustable. On the market since January, the Supersucker HDX was formally introduced at the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo in Indianapolis in combination with the Acculevel load sensor system, which is optional on the HDX. When full debris tank capacity is reached, the load sensor system automatically relieves vacuum to prevent over-filling. People have come to value the Acculevel on our Mud Dog line, and now you have that same debris level monitoring assurance available in a machine designed for anything from frozen ground to fly ash, Steinbach says. 800/837-9711; www.superproductsllc.com.
five operating pressures and flows, up to 333 gpm. The diesel-powered units have a slow-running quintuplex plunger pump and internal gearing that eliminates the need for large pulleys or belts. Features include a forged steel crankshaft in heavy-duty mounted bearings and drive pinion output shafts on both sides of the pump to accommodate opposite-hand drive. All operating controls are mounted on a separate accessory manifold for extra protection. 800/441-5059; www.nlbcorp.com.
