Duties & Responsibilities of Welding Inspector
Duties & Responsibilities of Welding Inspector
is carried out in any steel fabrication/construction industry and the quality requirements are very important based upon its application and the purpose intended for use The welding inspection plays a vital role in maintaining the quality requirements of welding .The duties of a welding inspector is classified under three main categories there are Before welding During welding after welding Before Welding Check the availability of the latest codes /specifications to be used for construction and familiarization of the same ensure that the latest drawing are available review the WPS & PQR Review the welder qualification ,test reports/qualify the welders check the welding process as per the WPS and review calibration certificates of all the relevant equipments check the joint preparation and record the size and dimensions check the batch test certificates of the consumables to be used if electrode filler wire gas & baking of electrodes if required check the availability of the calibration status check the material test certificates safety requirements documentation preheating as per WPS check weather proper access is available foe welding
During Welding Check the weather conditions check the preheating temperature as per WPS check weather the correct welder is welding the material in correct position check weather the correct consumables arte used carry out NDT after root pass if required for special welding application check the cleaning and interpass temperature check the welding parameters like amperage voltage travel speed etc safety requirements documentations to be carried out
After Welding Visual inspection of the welded material after proper cleaning Identification of the joint Observe and record the findings during inspection clearance for PWHT if required as per WPS check for defects if any by visual clearance for NDT as per requirements
If incase of any repair observe and record the findings and compare with the specifications requirements seek the advice of higher authorities for repair procedure carry out the repair with a qualified welder following the repair procedure /WPS,supervise the necessary parameters pertaining to duties before during and after welding once the repair is completed ,carry out the visual inspection and clearance for further PWHT/NDT
Duties & Responsibilities of a Welding Inspector: The duties & responsibilities of a welding inspector are to ensure the quality of work in strict compliance with codes, standards & drawings. The drawing shall be classified into three broader categories 1) Inspection before welding 2) Inspection during welding 3) Inspection after welding Inspection activities before welding To familiarize with applicable codes standards, specifications of latest editions and drawings of latest revisions To check the welding documents like WPS,PQR & welding qualifications test in view of position limits, expiry or validity etc to check and monitor the welding parameters outlined in the welding procedure like ,joint preparation ,fit up dimensional check, distortion control techniques etc to check the adequacies of welding equipment ,welder tools for their calibration and condition To check the mill certificates and batch certificates for the material to be welded and the consumables.
to check documentation of al the prewelding activities like weld Joint No, Welder No, Heat Nos etc
Inspection during Welding Welding inspector is to monitor the preheat temperatures maintenance minimum and maximum interpass temperature maintenance welding process parameters like voltage, amperiage and travel speed check the workmanship by looking at the cleanness and welders qualification check the removal of distortion control techniques like removal after 50% of welding done documentation control Inspection after welding Welding inspector is to check the dimensions after welding in the form of misalignments do a final visual inspection to ensure the weld is free from any surface discontinuities monitor the non destructive examination if any thing to be carried out and follow up monitor the PWHT and post heating if any and follow up. Identify the repairs if any a and follow up with the following considerations i. ii. iii. iv. v. the repair shall be confirmed with applicable NDT techniques report to higher authorities about the extent and severity of repair get repair procedure approved carryout the repair welding as per the welding activities do re-NDT if any
But after the underestimated thing is documented in the records welding inspector shall maintain documents in the following ways Legible Traceable With all the relevant requirements Inspector shall carry out all the activities with honesty integrity, knowledgeable in work, good communication and physically fit enough.
