Pilgrims of Love
The Anthropology of a Global Sufi Cult
Pnina Werbner
Werbner’s book traces the development of a Sufi Naqshbandi order which
originated in Pakistan and has extended to Britain, Europe, the Middle East,
and Southern Africa. Drawing on twelve years of fieldwork, she explains the
complex organization of Sufi orders as regional and transnational cults, and
examines how such cults are manifested through ritual and embodied in
sacred mythology and global diasporas.
Afghanistan
Louis Dupree
Afghanistan looks at this age-old land and country as it was before the Soviet
invasion. It contains two epilogues; one written in 1978 and the other in 1980
right before the Soviet invasion. Afghanistan traces the development of this
country from a tribal and politically unstable nation to one with a system of
representative government consistent with its cultural and historical patterns.
Apart from the narrative, the author presents all this material to us through
charts, maps, and illustrations. It also contains appendices on music and
calendars used in Afghanistan.
The Pathans
With an Epilogue on Russia
Sir Olaf Caroe
The Pathans is a labour of love and in its pages the Pathan and the grandeur of
his scenic setting spring to urgent life. The Pathans themselves recognize this
work as the locus classicus of their history. This impression includes an
Epilogue written by the author in the light of recent events in Afghanistan.

Bahawalpur
History and Architecture
Compiled by Major-General Shujaat Zamir Dar
This book highlights the magnificent buildings of great historical and
architectural value in Bahawalpur, a former princely state in Pakistan. The
imposing forts, magnificent palaces and the shrines of Uch are a living
testimony to the grandeur of Cholistan, in the Punjab. Fully illustrated, with
more than a hundred photographs, this book serves as a guide and a beacon
for archaeologists, architects, anthropologists, and general readers.

Laila Shahzada
Exploring an Inner Landscape
Salwat Ali
Laila Shahzada was foremost among the handful of women artists of the 1960s
brave enough to forge a modern idiom to articulate their aesthetic sensibilities.
The first artist to draw inspiration from the archaeological sites of the Indus
Valley and Taxila region, Laila’s oeuvre played an important role in initiating
and popularizing the ancient history of Pakistan as viable subject matter. This
book explores Laila’s life and art which was characterized by rich colourization
and stirring organic undulations with a strong accent on the surreal and the
mystical.
Nagori
Voice of Conscience
Amber Romasa
In painting or in his writings on art, Nagori’s expression remains forceful
and blunt. Any conversation with him on the subject of his work and life
means being exposed to an encyclopaedic range of knowledge on the world
of art, the significance of protest art, the Indian and Muslim heritage of
art, combined with a brimming passionate alertness to historical and
present injustices. This book is an exploration of the artist and his
powerful works of art which communicate through daring imagery and
strident colours, and point out political failings, economic disparity, and
social injustice.

In Quest of Jinnah
Diary, Notes, and Correspondence of Hector Bolitho
Edited by Sharif al Mujahid
Hector Bolitho’s Jinnah: Creator of Pakistan (1954) became his most celebrated
and influential book. In Quest of Jinnah offers fresh and authentic insights into
the personality and politics of Mohammed Ali Jinnah. This volume contains
expunged passages from the first draft of Jinnah: Creator of Pakistan along
with Bolitho’s diary and notes, his correspondence with the government of
Pakistan functionaries and highly placed individuals in Britain, India and
Pakistan who had known Jinnah personally, as well as the English and
American reviews of Jinnah: Creator of Pakistan.
A Woman of Substance
The Memoirs of Begum Khurshid Mirza
Edited and Compiled by Lubna Kazim
Foreword by Gail Minault
Begum Khurshid Mirza was the daughter of Sheikh Abdullah and Waheed
Jahan Begum who were the founders of Aligarh Women’s College. This book is
more than an account of Khurshid Mirza’s personal life. It spans the years
from 1857 to 1983 and provides insights into the social conditions of Indian
Muslims, the state of Muslim women’s education, and the transition to
Pakistan, while illuminating Khurshid Mirza’s rich and varied life as an
activist, radio and television artist, a writer, a devoted daughter, wife, and
mother.
My Fellow Traveller
A Translation of Humsafar
Hameeda Akhtar Husain Raipuri
This is Hameeda Akhtar Husain Raipuri’s first work written at the age of 72.
The warm and guileless flow of her language, and her woman’s perceptions,
make this book a wonderfully pleasant evocation of a past era and departed
individuals. Not only does she throw light on the character and unusual family
history of her late husband, Akhtar Husain Raipuri, a well-known intellectual,
she also provides luminous vignettes of prominent people such as her father
Zafar Omer, a popular Urdu novelist of his day, Sarojini Naidu, Gandhi, and
Maulvi Abdul Haq. Moreover, this book fi lls the gaps in her husband’s tour de
force, Gard-e-Rah.
Memoirs of a Bystander
A Life in Diplomacy
Iqbal Akhund
Written by a pioneer diplomat of Pakistan, this book makes an important
contribution to a dispassionate understanding of critical and controversial
issues. Akhund’s highly readable and at times amusing account casts a fresh
light on critical and still controversial events in Pakistan’s history.
M. A. Jinnah
Views and Reviews
Edited by M. R. Kazimi
This is a collection of articles written by the most eminent authorities on
South Asian history and focuses on the life and career of Mohammad Ali
Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. Many of these articles have been published in
various research journals, but are made available in Pakistan in a book form
for the first time. They contain objective and in-depth studies, including new
interpretations of great historical importance, as well as new material.
A Georgian Saga
From the Caucasus to the Indus
Meherafroze Mirza Habib
The book provides an insight into the lives of Mirza Khusro Beg, a scion of a
princely family of Georgia, who was adopted by Mir Karam Ali Khan Talpur,
and Fareedun, also from Georgia, whose paths fatefully crossed thousands of
miles away, in distant Sindh. The author traces the historical background that
led to the author’s ancestors’ migration from Georgia in the early 1800s to
Sindh, and recreates the era of domestic feudal revolts, the rapidly changing
montage of conquerors and the imposition of foreign rule by rival imperial
powers in Georgia. The second half of the book focuses on Khusro’s life as a
young man, and his relationship with the Mirs of Sindh.
A Pathan Odyssey
Mohammad Aslam Khan Khattak
Edited with a Foreword by James W. Spain
M. Aslam Khan Khattak served as the Minister for Interior, Minister for
Communication, and the Railway Minister. This memoir gives an invaluable
first-hand account of pre-Partition and the Second World War India, and of
fift y years of independence. The author also recounts his experiences as a
governor, minister, ambassador, politician, and businessman.
‘Dear Mr Jinnah’
Selected Correspondence and Speeches of Liaquat Ali Khan,
1937–1947
Edited by Roger D. Long
Foreword by Stanley Wolpert
Liaquat Ali Khan’s letters to Jinnah and his speeches show Liaquat’s devotion
to the Quaid-i-Azam and to the concept of Pakistan. From 1937 till 1947, they
worked so closely together that Jinnah called Liaquat ‘my right hand’. This
book shows the relationship which changed the course of history in South
Asia.
Unlikely Beginnings
A Soldier’s Life
Major-General A. O. Mitha
This military memoir spans some interesting and critical times in the last
century. General Mitha’s life in the army covered a wide range of experiences
and brought him many years in senior positions. As the founder and
commander of the SSG he was responsible for creating an important fighting
force in the army. Unorthodox and bold, his views on the army’s perennial
concern with the relationship between juniors and seniors are presented in
lively anecdotes.
A Journey to Disillusionment
Sherbaz Khan Mazari
Though primarily the memoirs of a leading opposition figure, the book is also
in part, a history of Pakistan. Beginning with Mazari’s entering politics as a
young man in opposition to the Ayub Khan Government, it goes on to give an
account of the Bhutto and the Zia periods. The author makes interesting
revelations about the leading political players and the events of those
tumultuous times which eventually led to Bhutto’s ouster in 1977.
Mirza Ghalib
A Creative Biography
Natalia Prigarina
This is a creative and interesting biography based on the life and work of
Mirza Ghalib (1797–1869) who was arguably the greatest eastern poet of the
nineteenth century. Here, two main motifs interweave—the poet’s destiny and
his creative work. His poetry reveals itself as a wonderful testimony of
harmony, spiritual power, inner freedom, and intellectual capacity.
Jinnah
Speeches and Statements, 1947–1948
Introduction by S. M. Burke
With a detailed Introduction by a well-known historian, Samuel M. Burke, this
title carries all the significant speeches and statements of Quaid-i-Azam
Mohammad Ali Jinnah in his position of Governor-General of the newly
founded State of Pakistan.
Jinnah of Pakistan
Stanley Wolpert
Mohammad Ali Jinnah was the inspirational father and first head of the state
of Pakistan. Wolpert shows how Jinnah’s shrewd and skilful leadership
combined brilliant advocacy and singular tenacity to win his suit for the
creation of Pakistan on behalf of the ‘Muslim nation’—his sole client during
the last, lonely, pain-fi lled decade of his life.

Wing), Government of Pakistan. The book is divided into three parts. The first

Oral Pathology
Fourth Edition
J. V. Soames and J. C. Southam
This fourth edition of Oral Pathology has been extensively revised and
updated. It continues to provide clear, concise and comprehensive coverage of
the clinical and pathological features of a wide range of oral diseases. It
discusses their causes and the underlying mechanisms, and describes how
changes in the structure and function of oral tissues relate to clinical
presentation and meets the requirements of the undergraduate curriculum.
Recent developments in genetics and molecular biology, and information on
some rare diseases, have also been incorporated.
The second edition of the book clarifies and further corroborates this. The themes
of incest and political legitimacy are addressed, the ‘revision’ theory is explored—
and debunked—and the ahistorical character of Richard examined in the context
of Richard II in additional notes. Elsewhere, the author adduces fresh evidence to
demonstrate what he sees as crucial to Hamlet: the protagonist’s remarkable
facility for and preoccupation with theatre screening and indeed impeding his
capacity for spontaneous historical action.
This book has a complete range of up-to-date and motivating material for undergraduate/graduate classes at
college or university. The course reflects the new trends in language teaching and provides students with graded
developing practice in the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The emphasis is on a
purposeful and communicative approach to language learning, which at the same time will provide students with
a sound command of language structure and vocabulary.

Architecture
A Very Short Introduction
Andrew Ballantyne
The balance of posterity and practicality in architecture throughout history,
and its cultural relevance—from the Pyramids of Ancient Egypt to the Sydney
Opera House, starkly contrasted with common cottage dwellings—are
skillfully examined in this book. While the reader is introduced to particular
historical periods, and to particular styles such as ‘baroque’ and ‘modern’,
Andrew Ballantyne goes beyond this to explore the economic, political, and
aesthetic significance of buildings, looking at how architecture acquires
meaning through tradition and how it contributes to our sense of who we are.
Aristotle
A Very Short Introduction
Jonathan Barnes
The influence of Aristotle, the prince of philosophers, on the intellectual
history of the West is second to none. In this book Jonathan Barnes examines
Aristotle’s scientific research, his discoveries in logic, his metaphysical
theories, his work in psychology, ethics, and politics, and his ideas about art
and poetry, placing his teachings in their historical context.
Art History
A Very Short Introduction
Dana Arnold
In this clear and concise book, Dana Arnold presents an introduction to the
issues, debates, and artefacts that make up the discipline of art history. Using a
wide range of images, from Easter Island statues to Constable’s The Cornfield,
the author shows how the artworks themselves can be the starting point for
how we ‘read’ art history, and suggests a diversity of ways through which we
can enjoy, think about, and understand art. With a glossary of technical terms,
and list of useful website addresses, this is an invaluable and accessible
introduction to a fascinating subject.
Buddhism
A Very Short Introduction
Damien Keown
In clear and straightforward language, and with the help of maps, diagrams,
and illustrations, this book explains how Buddhism began and how it evolved
into its present day form. The central teachings and practices are set out
clearly, and key topics such as karma and rebirth, meditation, ethics, and
Buddhism in the West, receive detailed coverage in separate chapters. The
distinguishing features of the main schools—such as Tibetan and Zen
Buddhism—are clearly explained.
Capitalism
A Very Short Introduction
James Fulcher
The word ‘capitalism’ is one that is heard and used frequently, but what does
the term really mean? James Fulcher addresses this issue using detailed and
absorbing case studies, ranging from the East India Company in the 1600s to
the Barings Bank collapse in 1995. He looks at the different forms that
capitalism takes in Britain, Japan, Sweden, and the United States. He also
discusses the crisis tendencies of capitalism as seen through the tulipomania of
17th-century Holland, the recent South-East Asian banking crisis, and the
Enron/Worldcom crisis in America. The book ends by discussing whether
capitalism is heading for some final crisis, and where alternative systems are to
be found.

Democracy
A Very Short Introduction
Bernard Crick
No political concept is more used, and misused, than that of democracy. This
book is a short account of the history of the doctrine, practices, and
institutions of democracy, from ancient Greece and Rome through the
American, French, and Russian revolutions, and its varieties and conditions in
the modern world. It argues that democracy is a necessary but not a sufficient
condition for good government, and that ideas of the rule of law, and of
human rights, and the claims and liberties of groups within society must often
limit the will of democratic majorities.
Dreaming
A Very Short Introduction
J. Allan Hobson
Focusing on dreaming to explain the mechanisms of sleep and sleep laboratory
science, the author explains the fascinating discoveries of modern sleep
science. In this book he reveals how dreaming maintains and develops the
mind, why we go crazy in our dreams in order to avoid doing so when we are
awake, and why sleep is not just good for health but essential for life.
Emotion
A Very Short Introduction
Dylan Evans
Was love invented by European poets in the Middle Ages or is it part of
human nature? Will winning the lottery really make you happy? Is it possible
to build robots that have feelings? These are just some of the intriguing
questions explored in this guide to the latest thinking about emotions.
Drawing on a wide range of scientific research, from anthropology and
psychology to neuroscience and artificial intelligence, this book takes the
reader on a fascinating journey into the human heart.
Empire
A Very Short Introduction
Stephen Howe
Not only are we living with the legacies of the great colonial empires of the
past, but also with the new economic-based imperial systems of the modern
world. This book looks at what the ‘idea of empire’ has meant throughout
history—from the ancient Roman Empire, through the reign of Genghis Khan,
the British Raj, the colonization of the Americas by the seafaring Spanish, the
Atlantic Slave Trade, and the Soviet Empire, to the present day—disentangling
the multiple uses and abuses of such labels as ‘empire’ and ‘colonial’, and
offering a compelling look at the profound changes in the modern world.
Evolution
A Very Short Introduction
Brian and Deborah Charlesworth
This incisive and thought-provoking book introduces some of the most
important findings and concepts of evolutionary biology, such as the formation
and divergence of species, adaptation, mutation, and natural selection. The
authors trace the progress of evolutionary thought from the first publication of
Darwin and Wallace over 140 years ago, to recent evidence provided by
studying evolution at the molecular level. The book ends by showing how
evolutionary ideas illuminate some of the hardest questions in modern biology,
such as why ageing happens and why some animals behave altruistically.
Fascism
A Very Short Introduction
Kevin Passmore
Kevin Passmore brilliantly unravels the paradoxes of one of the most
important phenomena of the modern world—tracing the origins of fascism in
the intellectual, political, and social crises of the late nineteenth century,
fascist movements and regimes in Italy and Germany, and the fortunes of
‘failed’ fascist movements in Eastern Europe, Spain, and the Americas. He
shows how important racist nationalism was to fascism, examines its appeal to
women and men, workers and capitalists, and concludes with a look at the
recent revival of the extreme right in Europe.
Feminism
A Very Short Introduction
Margaret Walters
This book looks at the development of feminism, exploring its earliest roots as
well as key issues such as voting rights, the liberation of the Sixties, and
whether feminist thought remains relevant today. She brings the subject
completely up to date by providing an analysis of the current situation of
women across the globe, from Europe and the US to the Third World.
Globalization
A Very Short Introduction
Manfred Steger
‘Globalization’ has become the buzzword of our time—a term that describes a
variety of changing economic, political, cultural, ideological, and
environmental processes that are alleged to have accelerated and intensified in
the last few decades. Manfred Steger presents globalization in accessible
language as a multifaceted process encompassing global, regional, and local
aspects of social life. He explores whether it is a new phenomenon, and if it
should be considered a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ thing—a question that has been hotly
debated in classrooms, boardrooms, and on the streets—especially since the
9/11 terrorist attacks.
Linguistics
A Very Short Introduction
P. H. Matthews
Linguistics falls between arts and science, where the most fascinating
discoveries and the most important problems are found. Peter Matthews
begins his discussion with the oldest, ‘arts’ end of the subject and moves
chronologically through to the latest in scientific research. He looks in turn at
such areas as the prehistory of languages and their common origins, language
and evolution, the nature of change inherent in language, grammars and
dictionaries, and phonetics. An appraisal of the latest research into language
in neuro-science completes this refreshing and insightful introduction to
linguistics.
Literary Theory
A Very Short Introduction
Jonathan Culler
Literary Theory is a controversial subject. Said to have transformed the study
of culture and society in the past two decades, it is accused of undermining
respect for tradition and truth, encouraging suspicion about the political and
psychological implications of cultural products rather than admiration for
great literature. In this book, Jonathan Culler explains ‘theory’, not by
describing warring ‘schools’ but by sketching key ‘moves’ that theory has
encouraged and speaking directly about the implications of theory for
thinking about literature, human identity, and the power of language.
Machiavelli
A Very Short Introduction
Quentin Skinner
Niccolo Machiavelli taught that political leaders must be prepared to do evil
that good may come of it, and his name has been a byword ever since for
duplicity and immorality. Is his sinister reputation deserved? In answering this
question Quentin Skinner focuses on three major works, The Prince, the
Discourses, and The History of Florence, and distils from them an introduction
to Machiavelli’s doctrines of exemplary clarity.
Nationalism
A Very Short Introduction
Steven Grosby
In this compelling book, Steven Grosby uses examples throughout history,
from ancient Israel to the present-day Balkans, to discuss how nations arise
from a sense of kinship, territory, history, and shared religion. Highlighting
the social, philosophical, and anthropological perspectives, he asks why
nations exist, when they first appeared, and what this divisiveness can tell us
about our nature as human beings.
Philosophy
A Very Short Introduction
Edward Craig
This lively and engaging book is the ideal introduction for anyone who has
ever been puzzled by what philosophy is or what it is for. Edward Craig argues
that philosophy is not an activity from another planet: learning about it is just
a matter of broadening and deepening what most of us do already. He shows
that philosophy is no mere intellectual pastime: thinkers such as Plato,
Buddhist writers, Descartes, Hobbes, Hume, Hegel, Darwin, Mill, and de
Beauvoir were responding to real needs and events—much of their work
shapes our lives today, and many of their concerns are still ours.
Politics
A Very Short Introduction
Kenneth Minogue
In this provocative but balanced essay, Kenneth Minogue discusses the
development of politics from the ancient world to the twentieth century. He
prompts us to consider why political systems evolve, how politics offers both
power and order in our society, whether democracy is always a good thing,
and what future politics may have in the twenty-first century.
Postcolonialism
A Very Short Introduction
Robert J. C. Young
This innovative and lively book is quite unlike any other introduction to
postcolonialism. Robert Young examines the political, social and cultural
after-effects of decolonization by presenting situations, experiences, and
testimony rather than examining the abstract theory. He situates the debate in
a wide cultural context, discussing its importance as an historical condition,
using examples such as the status of aboriginal people, of those dispossessed
from their land, Algerian rai music, postcolonial feminism and global, social
and ecological movements.
Prehistory
A Very Short Introduction
Chris Gosden
Many of the familiar aspects of modern life are no more than a century or two
old, yet our deep social structures and skills were in large measure developed
by small bands of our prehistoric ancestors many millennia ago. We all have
our prehistories, even in this best documented of all centuries, and they are
vital to our emotional, intellectual and social well-being. The book compels
one to think seriously about who we are by considering who we have been,
presenting a riveting and absorbing exploration through four and a half
million years of human existence.
Psychology
A Very Short Introduction
Gillian Butler and Freda McManus
This book provides an up-to-date overview of the main areas of psychology,
translating complex psychological matters, such as perception, into readable
topics so as to make psychology accessible for newcomers to the subject. The
authors use everyday examples as well as research findings to foster curiosity
about how and why the mind works in the way it does, and why we behave in
the ways that we do. This book explains why knowing about psychology is
important and relevant in the modern world.
Quantum Theory
A Very Short Introduction
John Polkinghorne
Quantum Theory is the most revolutionary discovery in physics since Newton.
In simple, non-mathematical language this book unravels the strange and
exciting ideas that make the subatomic world so different from the world of
the every day. The author lucidly discusses such topics as uncertainty,
unpredictability, wave/particle duality, the unresolved problem of
measurement, demystifying one of the greatest discoveries in the history of
physics and one of the outstanding intellectual achievements of the twentieth
century.
Shakespeare
A Very Short Introduction
Germaine Greer
In this book Germaine Greer explores Shakespeare as a thinker, unravelling
the methods he used to dramatize moral and intellectual issues in a way that
made his audience dazzlingly aware of an imaginative dimension to daily life.
She argues that as long as Shakespeare’s work remains essential to the English-
speaking world, it will retain the values which make it unique.
Socialism
A Very Short Introduction
Michael Newman
Michael Newman examines and explains the successes and failures of modern
socialism by taking an international perspective—ranging from communism
in Cuba to social democracy in Sweden. Discussing its evolution from the
industrial towns of the 19th century to its response to the feminist, Green, and
anti-capitalist movements today, Newman concludes that, with its values of
equality, solidarity, and cooperation, socialism remains as relevant as ever but
that it needs to learn lessons from the past.
Sociology
A Very Short Introduction
Steve Bruce
Drawing on studies of social class, crime and deviance, work in bureaucracies,
and changes in religious and political organizations, this book explores the
tension between the individual’s role in society and society’s role in shaping
the individual, and demonstrates the value of sociology as a perspective for
understanding the modern world.
Terrorism
A Very Short Introduction
Charles Townshend
Is one person’s terrorist another’s freedom fighter? Is terrorism crime or war?
Can there be a ‘war against terrorism’? This book charts a clear path through
the efforts to understand and explain modern terrorism. It unravels complex
questions such as: Are terrorists criminals? How far does media publicity
sustain terrorism? What can be done about it? It also examines the historical,
ideological, and local roots of terrorist violence, and the success of specific
terrorist and anti-terrorist campaigns in the more distant, as well as the recent
past.
World Music
A Very Short Introduction
Philip V. Bohlman
In this fascinating introduction to the remarkable diversity of world music,
Bohlman explores the interpretation and, sometimes, misinterpretation of
world music by the West. More recent musical encounters in the nineteenth
and twentieth centuries, such as international festivals and world fairs, reveal
the enduring fascination with ethnic diversity. World music’s invention and
growth, as well as concerns for its ‘authenticity’ and ‘universality’, are explored
through scrutinizing a selection of music cultures and events such as the
Grammy Awards and the Eurovision Song Contest, as well as through
examining such musicians as Bob Marley, Manu Dibango, Béla Bartók, the
Chieftains, and Leadbelly.

Military Inc.
Ayesha Siddiqa

operations and its authoritarianism in Pakistan. These operations vary from
large manufacturing units to smaller ventures such as bakeries and gas
stations. The common factor amongst all these operations is the lack of
transparency. This book fi lls a theoretical gap and provides a comprehensive
analysis of Pakistan military’s business expansion, especially in the last five
years, and its impact on politics, economics, and the military profession.

in the United Kingdom, pre-Independence British India, and the modern day

Ranging from the fall of Singapore in 1942 to the assassination of Mahatma
Gandhi in 1948, this book provides a vivid behind-the-scenes look at Britain’s
decision to divest itself from the crown jewel of its empire. The author, a
leading authority on Indian history, paints memorable portraits of all the key
participants including Gandhi, Churchill, Attlee, Nehru, and Jinnah, with a
special focus on the British viceroy, Lord Louis Mountbatten.
Divided Cities
Partition and its Aftermath in Lahore and Amritsar, 1947–1957
Ian Talbot
This book is a pioneering locality based study of the processes of violence,
migration and resettlement arising from the 1947 partition of the
subcontinent. The focus is on the neighbouring cities of Lahore and Amritsar
that were divided by the new international boundary which ran through the
Punjab. The book provides a much needed comparative dimension to the study
of the aftermath of Partition. It is an important case study for wider issues of
collective violence, forced migration, and refugee experience.
Partition of India
Legend and Reality
H. M. Seervai
This book gives an in-depth historical analysis of the events and causes that
led to the partition of the Indian Subcontinent in 1947. It is based on historical
research undertaken by the author over a period of several years and includes
data based on the 12 volumes of official documents published under the title
Transfer of Power, 1942–47. The thesis of the book is that Gandhi, Nehru, and
the Congress leadership were primarily responsible for the decisions leading to
the partition of India and exposes the myth that Jinnah was solely responsible
for the Partition.

India–Pakistan Negotiations
Is Past Still Prologue?
Dennis Kux
This book provides a historical and current review of the trends of six key
India–Pakistan negotiations largely over shared resources and political
boundaries. Pre-independence political leadership and negotiations that led to
the partitioning of British India into these two nation-states provide insights
on subsequent India–Pakistan negotiations. Reviewing these critical
negotiations show how both countries must exert robust, creative, and
enduring leadership to achieve concrete, broad-based improvement in their
bilateral relations, and ultimately, South Asian regional security.
Danger in Kashmir
Josef Korbel
Foreword by C. W. Nimitz
Perhaps the most important problem plaguing India and Pakistan today is
their dispute over the ownership of the State of Jammu and Kashmir. Initial
efforts were made in 1948 by the United Nations to seek a peaceful solution to
the dispute. The author was a member of the UN Commission on India and
Pakistan, and provides a first-hand account of these efforts of the United
Nations to resolve the Kashmir issue.
Kashmir
Ethnic Conflict, International Dispute
Iffat Malik
The Kashmir crisis is more than fift y years old, and as it is an internationally
explosive issue, the literature on the topic is also voluminous, projecting the
views of both sides as well as impartial world bodies and authors. Dr Iffat
Sanna Malik has made an objective study and dealt with the domestic and
international aspects—first separately and then in unison. Original in its
treatment, this treatise is heavily documented and should be of use to scholars
and general readers alike.

Muslim Conceptions of Islam and Society
Riaz Hassan
This book explores key aspects of Muslim religious and social consciousness in
Islamic societies. The analysis is based on interviews of 4,500 Muslims from
Indonesia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Egypt. The study breaks new ground in
exploring the relationship between religion and politics, and Muslim attitudes
towards political Islam, gender roles, veiling, and patriarchy. This study
challenges the perception of Islam as an essentialist, monolithic and static
phenomenon.

On Air
Maniza Naqvi
On Air weaves its plot around the theme of loss, love, desire, and death. The
plot unfolds over a six-hour period in which the main character, Naz, tells
stories to listeners and callers over the radio on a late night talk show slot. The
characters in Naz’s stories reflect her own pathologies as she tries to come to
terms with her experiences. The subject matter is serious but has been dealt
with subtly, in a rather light-hearted manner.

O City of Lights
Faiz Ahmed Faiz: Selected Poetry and Biographical Notes
Selected and Edited by Khalid Hasan
Faiz transformed the established theme of individual love into love for
humanity and concern for the human condition. Because of his knowledge of,
and empathy with, the Persian and Arabic literary tradition, he was able to
link it with contemporary Urdu poetry. His scholarship in English literature
imbued his work with an international dimension. This volume is made up of
translations of Faiz’s best work by the late poet and scholar Daud Kamal, and
by journalist and literary translator Khalid Hasan. It also contains a prose
section based on Faiz’s interviews and conversations that epitomize his views
on life and literature.
Fahmida Riaz is the first woman writer to give uninhibited, powerful and
artistically superb feminist expression to Urdu poetry. This book is a
representative selection from all her published anthologies and it traces her
emotional and intellectual journey from a lovelorn young girl to a mature
woman with a deep commitment to human dignity, peace, and secularism in
the Indo-Pak subcontinent.
A Certain Season
M. Athar Tahir
Body Loom
M. Athar Tahir
Athar Tahir in his latest collection of verse weaves together skeins of thought,
mood, and feeling to create a fine fabric of poetry. The book offers a variety of
verse ranging from the genuinely inspired to the fresh. A strand which runs in
and out of this tapestry is the theme of being, becoming and attaining identity.
The images and symbols used succeed in imparting a unique and distinct
character to the work. Whether metaphysical, descriptive or lyrical in
character, the poems are reflective of a thoughtful and observing mind and
proclaim Athar Tahir as one of the finest Pakistani poets writing in English.

Mohammad Waseem
This book is essential reading for understanding the process of
democratization in Pakistan under General Pervez Musharraf. The book is
divided into three parts: the pre-election institutional, constitutional and
political changes; the 2002 election dynamics based on party activity and
campaign issues; and the post-election process of government formation in the
Centre and Provinces.

Valleys in Transition
Twenty Years of AKRSP’s Experience in Northern Pakistan
Edited by Geof Wood, Abdul Malik, and Sumaira Sagheer
This book is the result of a series of reflective studies conducted by AKRSP
(Aga Khan Rural Support Programme) which represented a valuable lens
through which to test the viability and efficacy of fashions and approaches to
development, as reviewed in the introduction. The authors, a combination of
practitioners and thinkers, track the subtleties of change in people’s livelihoods
through which precarious, near universal subsistence poverty has been
exchanged for a much more nuanced and differentiated story of diverging
fortunes and opportunities, which have also embraced out-migration.

Shamsur Rahman Faruqi
Books on Iqbal are legion but very rarely an outstanding literary critic comes
up with a book which affords original insight into both the sweep of Iqbal’s
works and the particular aspects of Iqbal’s poetry. This is a work by a brilliant
critic, bound to dominate the literary scene for long. Shamsur Rahman Faruqi,
who concentrates on stylistic studies and poetic forms, has presented for the
first time a separate volume on Iqbal, which follows his earlier works on the
stalwarts of Urdu poetry, Mir and Ghalib.
Intikhab-e-Kalam Majaz
Majaz was a poet most representative of his age, struggling for independence
as well as seeking social emancipation. His poetry, specially his masterpiece
‘Awarah’ (Vagabond) characterizes what we came to identify in the 1960s as
the ‘Angry Young man’. He was an asset to the Progressive Writers Movement
as attested by all his contemporaries and comrades. Even today, 50 years after
his mysterious death, Majaz exercises a spell over every succeeding generation
of poets and critics. This volume showcases a selection of his poetry.

Honour
Crimes, Paradigms, and Violence against Women
Edited by Lynn Welchman and Sara Hossain
Honour brings together the practical insights and experiences of individuals
and organizations working in diverse regions and contexts to combat ‘crimes
of honour’. The book examines strategies of response to such manifestations of
violence against women, focusing largely on ‘honour killings’, forced
marriages, and the related use of ‘honour’ and ‘provocation’ as a legal defence
in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and South Asia. This timely book
highlights activist and practice-orientated academic perspectives from both
the South and the North.
Zina
Transnational Feminism and the Moral Regulation of Pakistani
Women
Shahnaz Khan
In this study, the author interrogates the Zina (anti-adultery) Ordinance and
its implications for Pakistani women. She presents a substantive assessment of
what has been occurring because of these laws and argues that the zina laws
help situate morality within the individual, thus de-emphasizing the
prevalence of societal injustice. The author’s original contribution lies in the
interviews with women arrested under the Zina Ordinance. She concludes that
transnational feminist solidarity can help women identify the linkages between
the local and global and challenge oppressive practices internationally.
Contested Representation
Punjabi Women in Feminist Debate in Pakistan
Tahmina Rashid
This research brings forth a dynamic way of looking at women’s rights
activism in Pakistan and how it affects the manner in which women issues are
analysed in various state and non-state avenues both at national and
international levels. Apart from looking at the legal rights, political
representation and socio-economic status of women, it looks at the contested
views on the class structure of society and the manner in which women are
positioned.
Beyond Honour
A Historical Materialist Explanation of Honour Related Violence
Tahira S. Khan
This book is an attempt to look beyond the cultural notion of honour as the
main motive behind gender-based violence by examining related issues
through historical academic research along with the narration of present day
stories of victims around the globe. By focusing on honour related violence in
the Muslim world, especially in Pakistan, this study aims to explain the origin
and persistence of the honour/shame code by applying Marx’s Historical
Materialist approach. This historical approach identifies the materialist/
economic basis of honour related violence in some societies, and the absence
of such violence in others.
Taboo!
The Hidden Culture of a Red Light Area
Fouzia Saeed
Foreword by I. A. Rehman
The Islamic injunction against extramarital sex adds to the complexities that
prostitution has brought to Pakistani society. The Shahi Mohalla or Royal
Locality is the most infamous flesh market of Pakistan which has existed
through the centuries. In the process it has left an indelible impression on not
only the social consciousness of Pakistan, but also on many arts like dancing
and singing. This is a scholarly, yet sympathetic, analysis of an area no one
admits to have visited, and which nevertheless flourishes under the eyes of the
guardians of law and public morality.
