UNIVERSITY OF THE CORDILLERAS COLLEGE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE EDUCATION Crime Laboratory SIGNATURE EXAMINATION CASE: Alleged Forgery of Signature

DATE RECEIVED: 08 November 2011 REQUESTING PARTY: Gerald F. Almoite PURPOSE OF THE EXAMINATION: The requesting party alleges that the signature being questioned is not his. This examination was conducted to determine whether the questioned signature is genuine or forged. EQUIPMENT USED: comparator and horse-shoe lens FINDINGS:After examining the ten standard signatures to determine the individual characteristics of the signature and the variations, the questioned signature and the standards were placed in juxtaposition before examining it with the naked eye, under the comparator and horse-shoe lens for comparison.

Figure 2. Questioned Signature

In the examination of the standards, it was observed that the signatures show good line quality, rhythm, and speed freedom as pointed out by the lack of uneven ink distribution, pen stops, tremors, etc. and that the signature was written in a quick manner. These indicate that the standard signatures were written normally and freely. However, normal variations were seen such as in the construction of bowls or loops. They may appear with an opening (eyelet) or may look like a retracing. Changes in the size and shape of the two strokes encircling the signature may also be observed. The downward initial stroke of letter m may vary in length but its foot does not always align with the two other feet of the letter. The findings on the questioned signature as compared to the standards are the following: a. According to movement The presence of movement impulses in the questioned signature such as the pen stops, uneven ink emphasis and knobs instead of hooks, which are absent in the standards indicate that the writer was hesitant and slow in writing the signature as opposed to the standards which were written quickly. b. According to line quality The inconsistency of ink distributions and the pen stops within the strokes are signs of poor line quality in the questioned signature. c. According to initial and terminal strokes The initial and terminal stokes of the standards consist of hooks and tapered or vanishing stokes that usually form arcaded or angular ends. On the other hand, the initial and terminal strokes of the questioned signature consist mostly of knobs and pen stops.

d. According to the design and structure of the letters

Figure 5 and 6. The loop created above the letter g of the standard signature (L) is short and for the other standards, the loop is missing. However, in the questioned signature (R), the loop is a lot longer than the normal range of the length of the loop.

Figure 7 and 8. In the standard signature, the letter o is either in the form of a narrow -eyed oblong or a retracing. In contrast, the letter o of the questioned signature is in the form of a ring which is rounder and it has significantly a wider opening.

CONCLUSION: After a thorough examination of the questioned signature, it is the examiners opinion that the standard signatures and the questioned signature were not written by the same person and that the questioned signature was written by another person and therefore, is a forged one.
