The adaptive reuse of this midcentur y t i l e fa c t o r y i n Au st i n , Texa s c r e a t e d many unique design challenges and opportunities. The project had a large research component conducted in conjunction with the J.J. Pickle Research C e n t e r a t t h e Un i ve r s i t y o f Texa s w h i ch studied t he ef fects of ar tif icial frag rance on human health and the potential risk they associated with prolonged inhalation. This space utilizes innovative inter ior mater ials such as carbon fiber, felt, and adobe which studies indicate are ef fective in improving indoor air q u a l i t y. The space has a central element made of molded wood which continually changes what is concealed and revealed as guests move within the space.

T h e a n n u a l Texa s C o n t e m p o r a r y A r t Fa i r i n H o u st o n , Texa s i s o n e o f t h e most quickly growing contemporar y ar t fairs in the nation. This project challenges the banal design typical of t his and many conventions by showcasing not only new paintings and sculptures, but also innovations in space making. Many considerations play into t he for m, including ease of transpor tation and assembly time. Instead of typical, linear booths, this design utilizes pods which house galleries in concentric rings, with s p e c i a l p r o g r a m s h o s t e d i n t h e c e n t e r. Each modular component which for ms the pod is designed to fit in a standard freight cont ainer for optimal portability and storage. The use of a color ful super-graphic on the f loor ser ves both as way-f inding and a b r a n d i n g o p p o r t u n i t y fo r t h e fa i r. T h i s project asser ts that not only could the Texa s C o n t e m p o r a r y A r t Fa i r ex h i b i t traditional art, but also could challenge the way users perceive, interact with, and circulate within the built environment.
