INTRODUCTION Lesson Objective In this lesson, you will identify and work with basic word tools and features.

IDENTIFY THE COMPONENTS OF THE WORD INTERFACE

MICROSOFT WORD 2010 Microsoft Word 2010 is an application that is used to create, revise, and save documents for printing, distribution, or future retrieval. By using the various typing aids and visual tools available in this application, you can make your documents not only accurate, but also attractive. Microsoft Word 2010 is part of the Microsoft Office 2010 suite, which is a collection of services and applications that help you create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and databases.

WORD DOCUMENT A Word document is an electronic document that is created by using the Microsoft Word application. It is a collection of pages containing information in the form of text, graphics, tables, or charts that is stored in an electronic form on a computer. You can customize document pages to suit your needs. The default file format for a Word 2010 document is the DOCX format.

THE WORD APPLICATION WINDOW The Word 2010 application window displays components that enable you to work effectively and efficiently on your documents. THE TITLE BAR: The bar located at the top of the application window that displays the name of the document that is open in the window. THE QUICK ACCESS TOOLBAR: A toolbar is displayed at the top-left corner of the title bar that provides quick access to core commands such as SAVE, UNDO and REDO. It can also be positioned below the Ribbon, and can be customized to include other commands, based on the users preferences and requirements.

THE RIBBON: The panel displayed below the title bar that provides access to commands in the application. The command in this panel is organized into different tabs and groups. THE STATUS BAR: A bar located at the bottom of the application window that displays a number of options relating to the overall document functionality. THE SCROLL BAR: Vertical bars the right and horizontal bar at the bottom of the application window allow you to navigate through a document.

THE RIBBON: The Ribbon contains a selection of easy-to-browse commands from which you can choose to work on a document. The commands are grouped according to their functionality. Groups are located within a broader functional group called a tab. The Ribbon can also be customized by adding or removing tabs, groups, and commands that are present in each group. You can also minimize the Ribbon to show only the tab names.

THE BACKSTAGE VIEW: The Backstage view in Word 2010 is the interface that is displayed when you select the File tab. It contains a series of tabs that group similar commands, and displays the compatibility, permissions, and version information about a Word document. It simplifies access to the features in Word and lets you save, share, print, and publish documents with a few mouse clicks.

TASK PANES: A task pane is a small window that is displayed within the Word environment. It provides feature-specific options and commands. A task pane can be resized, moved, and kept open while working on a document. The options in a task pane depend upon the content in a document. Task panes can be opened either by using specific commands on the Ribbon or from within other task panes.

GALLERIES: A gallery is a repository for elements that belong to the same category. It acts as a central location for accessing the various styles and appearance settings of an object. Galleries provide you with a set of visual choices to enhance the look and feel of elements while working on a document. Word provides galleries for various options such as styles, tables, shapes, and WordArt. Galleries enable you to choose from any of the preset formats and styles to quickly alter an object in a document. Some galleries are also accessible from shortcut menus, giving you quick access to gallery options. Galleries are arranged either on a grid or in a menu-like layout.

WORD HELP: The Word Help feature is a repository of information about the functionality of various features of Microsoft Word 2010. The Word Help window provides you with a quick and easy way to find answers to Word-related queries, online or offline. You can also search for information by browsing through the available links or by performing keyword-based searches. You can access the Word help feature by pressing F1 or clicking the Microsoft Word Help button.

CUSTOMIZE THE WORD INTERFACE

INTRODUCTION
LESSON OBJECTIVE When you start working with new software, the interface by default may not display all the options that you require, or it may be cluttered with options that you may not require at all. This will slow you down and make working cumbersome process. By customizing the environment, you will be able to display those option that you need for the current workflow.

THE WORD OPTION DIALOG BOX: The Word Options dialog box contains a series of tabs, each of which contains commands that allows you to customize the Word environment.

WORD TEMPLATE: A Word template is a predefined Word document that is used as a basis for creating other documents or templates. Every document in Word is based on a template. Word templates provide the basic structure, layout, formatting, and special characteristics for a document by storing styles and other document elements, such as the default document font, page layout settings, and boilerplate text. Word templates are of two types: document templates, which are used to create specific document types, and global templates, which store settings that are available to all open documents.

DOCUMENT VIEWS: The status bar contains options that enable you to display a Word document in different views. PRINT LAYOUT: Allows you to view a document as it will appear when printed. All sections such as tales, text and graphics will be displayed in their correct positioned in the document. FULL SCREEN READING: Allows you to view a document on the entire screen. This view is ideal for viewing multiple pages at a same time. WEB LAYOUT: Allows you to view a document as it will be displayed in a web browser. In this view, the entire document is displayed on a single page, with tables and text wrapping to fit in the window. OUTLINE: Allows you to view a document as on outline, where the document is displayed with bullets and plus signs, which can be expanded or collapsed to display or hide the subordinate levels of text. DRAFT: Allows you to view a document as a draft. In this view, the document is displayed without pictures and layouts to ensure that the focus is only on the text.

WINDOW VIEWS: The Window group on the View tab contains various options that allow you to manipulate the appearance of Word documents.

INTRODUCTION Word is a powerful word processor used to create a documents that primarily use a text to convey a information. You need to be familiar with the process of entering text in a document before adding more advanced features such as formatting.

DEFAULT TYPING OPTION: Word provides you with various typing options such as Word Wrap,
AutoCorrect, Check spelling and grammar as you type, and Smart tags that help you enter text neatly, quickly, and accurately.

WORD WRAPPING: Automatically wraps a long line text to the beginning of the next line so that you can continue typing. There is no need to manually end each line of text by pressing ENTER when you get close to the right margin. AUTOCORRECT: Fixes common typographical errors, misspelled words, and incorrect capitalization. CHECK SPELLING AND GRAMMAR AS YOU TYPE: Displays a wavy red or wavy green line below text that word considers a spelling

or grammar error, respectively. You can right-click the underlined item and word will suggest corrections for you. SMART TAGS: Allows you to perform specific action on data, such as names and dates, that word recognizes when typed and implies smart tags to them.
