INTRODUCTION:

Statistics are sets of mathematical equations that are used to analyze what is happening in the world around us. You've heard that today we live in the Information Age where we understand a great deal about the world around us. Much of this information was determined mathematically by using statistics. When used correctly, statistics tell us any trends in what happened in the past and can be useful in predicting what may happen in the future. In this Additional Mathematics Project Work, mean , median, interquartile range and standard deviation are used as tools to give us more informations on the five brands of packet drinks. The "mean" is the "average" , where we add up all the numbers and then divide by the number of numbers. The "median" is the "middle" value in the list of numbers. To find the median, the numbers have to be listed in numerical order. Interquartile range is The difference between the first quartile and third quartile of a set of data. This is one way to describe the spread of a set of data. Standard deviation (represented by the symbol sigma, ) shows how much variation or dispersion exists from the average (mean), or expected value. A low standard deviation indicates that the data points tend to be very close to the mean; high standard deviation indicates that the data points are spread out over a large range of values. This project also require the use of price index. A price index is a normalized average (typically a weighted average) of prices for a given class of goods or services in a given region, during a given interval of time. It is a statistic designed to help to compare how these prices, taken as a whole, differ between time periods or geographical locations. Price indexes have several potential uses. For particularly broad indices, the index can be said to measure the economy's price level or a cost of living. More narrow price indices can help producers with business plans and pricing. Sometimes, they can be useful in helping to guide investment.

CONCLUSION : Based on the five brands of packet drinks I have collected, brand .. is the best buy in terms of price and nutritional values. Mean is a better measurement of central tendency as compared to median. Mean take the average value for all the data since there is no extreme value in the data. Standard deviation can be considered a better measurement of dispersion compare to interquartile range. The value found for standard deviation in this project is smaller, therefore is a better indicator to show how far the data is dispersed from the mean. I also found out that for a rectangular box, the bigger the volume of the box, the smaller the ratio of A/V. Therefore, in order to reduce packaging cost, a model with small value of A/V need to be designed. However, the designer also need to consider the packaging of this model for display purposes and transportation in boxes. REFLECTION : During the time when I try to complete this project, there is a lot of information that I have found. I have learnt how total surface area of packet drinks and volume are calculated, and how to make use of the ratio between area and volume to design a packaging model which is cost effective. Apart from that, this project also encourages students to work together and share their knowledge. The project also encourages students gather information from the internet, improve thinking skills and promote effective mathematical communication. Not only that, I had learned some moral values that I can practice. This project had taught me to responsible on the works that are given to me to be completed. This project also had made me felt more confidence to do works and not to give up easily when we could not find the solution for any problem. I also learned to be more discipline on time, which I was given only 3 weeks to complete this project and pass up to my teacher just in time. I also enjoy

doing this project as I need to spend my time with friends to complete this project and it had tightens our friendship.
