Brief You are the Operations Manager in Timmerhus UK Ltd., a manufacturer of high specification prefabricated timber houses. The company produces a wide range of standard components, which are then assembled to individual tailor-made designs. In this way, the company is able to build individual homes on site within only a few weeks using the components manufactured offsite. The company manufactures many of the components in a production facility in Runcorn, Cheshire and these are then transported by road to the various construction sites around the UK. There are also a range of components and raw materials that the company acquires from external suppliers. These are shown in the table in Appendix 1. Timmerhus UK uses their own in-house teams of construction professionals, based at their head office in Runcorn and who travel to each of the sites at which construction takes place. The Runcorn location also has a sales office and show home, which are open to the public. The manufacturing site is shown in Appendix 2. Recently, however, the company has experienced an increase in defects among their finished products, which has led to increased costs in rectifying problems and recalling products. Additionally there have been instances where components have been missing, leading to delays on site. This has led to a cumulative effect in delaying other projects. The company does not currently have any quality management system in place but the board of directors believes this may help them solve the recent quality problems they have experienced. In addition, they are interested in setting up an Environmental Management System (EMS) and, if possible, integrating it with the Quality Management System (QMS) to form one complete management system. Part A (for submission by Friday 15th March 2013) Provide a report, with reference to recent research in the field, on the following: 1. Explain the basic philosophy behind quality management systems and consider and explain what quality improvement tools the company may use (15 marks). 2. Plan and describe an appropriate ISO 9001 compliant Quality Management System (QMS), which the organisation could employ to improve their quality problems (15 marks). 3. Explain what is meant by independent third party certification to the standard and how the organisation can become ISO 9001 certified (10 marks). 4. Discuss any relevant legislation and regulations that the company will have to comply with and explain how compliance with these can be incorporated into the ISO 9001 QMS and kept under review to take account of changes in legislation (5 marks). 5. Explain how the ISO 9001 QMS can be effectively managed on an ongoing basis (5 marks).

Part B (for submission by Friday 3rd May 2013) Provide a report, with reference to recent research in the field, on the following: 6. Explain how the company could integrate its QMS and EMS into one complete management system (10 marks). 7. Identify what the companys significant environmental aspects may be (20 marks). 8. Define some suitable objectives, targets and environmental management programmes that would be relevant to Timmerhus UK Ltd (10 marks). 9. Explain what auditing arrangements will be required for the integrated management system (10 marks). Total available marks: 100 This assignment contributes to 100% of the module assessment. To pass this module, a student must achieve a minimum of 50% for this assessment. The Report Your report is to be produced in A4 printed format (Word document) and the total word count of parts A and B combined should comprise no more than 5,000 words (excluding the reference list). Please state any assumptions you have made. Please submit sections A and B as separate files on Blackboard. References should be provided using the Harvard referencing style.
