NOTES: a. This SAIC does not apply to NDT contractors for out-of-kingdom vendors or on LSTK projects unless SAEP-1144 is specifically referred to by contract or purchasing documents. b. This checklist shall be modified to replace and/or include the inspection requirements of Contractor's project approved procedure for MPT. (Refer to SAEP-1143, Para. 1.3) ITEM No. A A1 A2 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA Surface Preparation Visual inspection of the examination surface for cleanliness and discontinuities was performed. Check for remnant magnetic fields exceeding 2 gauss. A visual inspection of the examination surface shall be performed prior to magnetization to verify the surface cleaning operation was thorough and complete, to identify gross discontinuities, and to identify areas of interest where an indication will be expected to occur. Prior to performing a fluorescent MT examination, the examination surface should be scanned with UV light to assure that all contaminants have been removed. Adequate ventilation is provided when performing an MT examination in confined areas to prevent inhalation of harmful materials. Surfaces to be examined and adjacent 1 inch area shall be free of rust, scale, slag, sand, grease, paint, oily films, or other interfering conditions. Note: Cleaning may be accomplished using detergents, organic solvents, descaling solutions, paint removers, vapour degreasing, blast cleaning or ultrasonic cleaning method. (ASME SEC V ARTICLE 7, Para T-741.1c) If MT examinations are performed on thin (a maximum of 0.002 inch thick), smooth, nonconductive, and/or nonmagnetic coatings, the applied magnetic field shall be verified for adequacy at the examination surface , with a magnetic field indicator. As cast, as rolled, as forged, or as welded surfaces are satisfactory if clean and the weld blends smoothly into the base metal without undercutting. Unusually rough or non-uniform surfaces (which would interfere with the formation and/or interpretation of indications) shall be properly conditioned prior to examination. Note: Conditioning may be in the form of wire brushing, sanding, or other approved methods that will not smear or otherwise mask discontinuities of interest. The color selected shall be the one providing the greatest contrast between the powder and the background. Determination of Magnetic Field Strength per ASTM E 1444 Sec 6.3 by using any of the following methods: Magnetic field strength on the surface of the part to be examined is determined using Pie shaped Magnetic field indicator.(ASME Sec V/7, Fig T-753.1.1) a) Pie shaped Magnetic field indicator is placed on the examined surface such that copper plated side is away from the inspected surface. b) A suitable field strength is indicated when clealy defined line(s) of magnetic particles form across the copper face on application of magnetizing force and magnetic particles simultaneously. Magnetic field strength on the surface of the part to be examined is determined using Artificial Flaw Shims. (ASME Sec V Art-7, Fig T753.1.2) a) The shim with the artificial flaw (of 30% depth) on top is placed on the surface inspected. b) A suitable field strength is indicated when clealy defined line(s) of magnetic particles forms on the shims face by appllying magnetizing force and magnetic particles simultaneously. Magnetic field strength on the surface of the part to be examined is determined using Hall-Effect Tangential-Field Probe. a) The probe shall be positioned on the surface to be examined such that maximum field is determined. b) A suitable field strength is indicated when the measured field is with in the range of 30 G to 60 G.

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA Lighting Requirements For visible MT examinations a minimum of 377 lux (lx) [35 foot candles (ftc) ] of white light illumination is available in the field at the examination surface. For shop or bench type inspections 1076 lx (100 ftc) of white light illumination is provided. Fluorescent MT examinations performed in the field require a minimum ultraviolet light intensity of 3000 W/cm at the examination surface, or 1000 W/cm in a darkened area. (ambient white light intensity is 22 lx [2 ftc] or less). Note: All attempts shall be made to darken the area as much as possible using blanket, hood, or portable booth. Ultraviolet (UV) and white light intensities shall be measured at the examination surface and recorded on the MT Inspection Report and UV Light Intensity Log Sheet prior to performing an MT examination. A UV Light Intensity Log sheet is kept with the black light unit at all times. Details of UV light utilization and equipment requirements are given in Appendix I. The ultraviolet light intensity at the examination surface shall be measured: a. At least every 4 hours. b. Whenever the work location is changed. c. After changing a component of the unit such as a filter or bulb. d. After a black light unit failure. The ultraviolet light intensity shall be determined using any of the following light meter: a) UVP Model J-221 Long Wave UV Meter. b) Spectroline DSE-100X c) DME-365, or equivalent. The light meters shall be calibrated every 6 months and bear an authentic seal which presents the date calibration was accomplished and the next due date. UV light intensity shall be minimum of 1000 W/cm in a darkened area of 2 ftc (22 lux) or less. UV light intensity of 3000 W/cm minimum is required for field inspections in areas of ambient white light which exceed 2 ftc (22 lux) as measured at the examination surface. Filter lens of UV light is not broken, cracked or chipped. (NOTE: Damaged filter shall be replaced as eye damage may result if unfiltered UV light is used.) The UV light must be allowed to warm-up a minimum of 5 minutes prior to use. (ASME SEC V Article 7 Para T-778.2C) Application of Contrast Paint (Optional) White contrast paint, (e.g., Magnaflux WCP-2 or equivalent) is applied to enhance the color contrast shall be flat white, quick drying, and the thickness applied should not exceed 0.002 inches (0.05 mm).

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA Examination Technique The yoke shall be placed in contact with the surface to be examined and energized. While maintaining the magnetic field the dry magnetic particles are applied so that a light, uniform, dust like coating settles on the examination surface. For wet magnetic particle solution, the solution is applied so an even coverage is obtained. While maintaining the magnetic field, the excess particles are removed by using a low pressure air stream from a hand actuated rubber bulb. (NOTE: Observe the particle formation during application and excess particle remova l.) Two separate examinations are carried out on each area. The yoke is placed so the magnetic field during the second examination is approximately perpendicular (90) to the field of the first examination forming an "X" pattern. The legs of the yoke shall be positioned for maximum contact with the surface being tested. For welds on flat surfaces, the yoke shall be placed across the weld at an angle of 30-45from the long axis of the weld. The second examination shall be perpendicular to the first. For examining circumferential (pipe) and fillet welds, the yoke shall be initially positioned so the legs straddle the weld or the area of interest and the applied field is perpendicular to the long axis of the weld. For the second examination, the yoke legs shall be positioned parallel to the long axis of the weld, on the crown of the weld or immediately beside the weld. Yoke leg spacing shall be between a minimum of 3 inches and a maximum of 8 inches . (Note: Shorter spacing may be used to compensate for the geometry of the area being examined or to increase sensitivity, leg spacing less than 3 inches is not recommended due to the strength of the magnetic field at the poles.) The surface to be tested shall be examined in suitable increments. Adjacent examination areas shall overlap a minimum of 10%.
