Knettishall Heath to Little Cressingham Getting there

To the start of the Peddars Way at Knettishall Heath TL943807 Our Pocket Companion is designed to help plan your multiday visit and to take with you as back up information. 25 years ago under a cloudless sky HRH Prince Charles ofcially opened the new East Anglian National Trail, the Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path. Since then an estimated 20 million walks have been taken on the route. This guide is split into the same eight sections as the ofcial Aurum Press guide. Within these sections the accommodation is set out from south to north and then west to east along the coast to reect the most popular walking direction. We highlight the major services that each village offers along with useful telephone numbers. Enjoy your journey. By train: Thetford is the nearest town (5 miles) to the start of the route and is well connected to the rail network via changing at Ely. By bus: The Brecks Bus, a Dial-a-Ride service that picks up from Thetford, Brandon and Lakenheath will drop off at the start of the route at Knettishall Heath (just before the Country park). The service must be booked with at least 48hrs notice by calling 01638 608080 (Open: 9-12 Mon-Friday). Please note this service does not run at the weekend or bank holidays. By bus and foot: If coming from Suffolk, Suffolk County Council run service 338 and 337 from Bury St.Edmunds to Coney Weston, (not on Sundays). Please contact Traveline (0871 200 22 33) to conrm times. There is then a pleasant largely off road route to the start of the Peddars Way. See map on left. On foot: A 15 mile(24km) off-road route between Knettishall Heath and Thetford is available as part of the Iceni Way. National Trail Manager By taxi: There are plenty of taxis in Thetford, you should expect to pay c.15.00 one way to get to the start of the route. It is not advisable to leave a car parked overnight at Knettishall Heath. What to expect: This section involves quiet paths through forest, river valleys and farmland with a few busy road crossings. Make sure you take a drink with you as this part can be very hot in summer without many refreshment facilities on the route. Further to the facilities listed in the villages there are toilets and a road-side refreshment stand at the A11 picnic site. Mobile reception is often poor or non-existant. What to look out for: North of the A1066 and Brettenham to Bridgham road are some of the best examples of raised embankment or agger upon which the Roman Road ran.

A Norfolk Songline
Norfolk Songline is the work of three artists (a storyteller, musician and artist) who have produced a book and CD celebrating the Peddars Way. Sculptures by Tom Perkins based on the text can be seen on the trail. Words and music tell the story of the interaction between the landscape and the people who have trodden the same ground, whether they be Stone Age hunters, Roman soldiers, Saxon settlers or Medieval pilgrims. Download the podcast and listen as you walk the Peddars Way for a completely unique experience of the timeless Peddars Way. The book and CD are also available from our website.

Getting there
The Peddars Way - Holme next the Sea TF694440 The end of the Peddars Way is at Holme-next-the-Sea, where it has been suggested that there may have been a ferry across the Wash to Lincolnshire during the Roman occupation of Britain. It is at Holme that the Peddars Way joins the Norfolk Coast Path. The Coasthopper bus stops at the Peddars Way/A149 junction
What to expect: Green lanes and eld edge paths to Holme make for a pleasant nal stretch, enhanced by your rst glimpse of the sea. Short stretches of road through Ringstead and Holme. Please note that the route of the National Trail into Hunstanton has been moved. Follow the signs from the beach access track across the dunes north of the golf course. Great walking in all weathers. What to look out for: The distinctive change in local building materials, the use of carstone gives a warm glow to the houses. The chalk base rock becomes evident with chalk ora and track as you walk down to Ringstead, home of the Gin Trap one of only three pubs directly on the route. The nal Songline sculpture marks the last leg of the Peddars Way.

Holme-next-the-Sea (and Hunstanton) to Burnham Overy Staithe Getting there
The Norfolk Coast Path - Hunstanton TF672410 The ofcial start of the Norfolk Coast Path is at Hunstanton. By train: Kings Lynn has good rail connections with Londons main line and cross country routes. The Coasthopper connects with trains. By bus: The Coasthopper bus service is the best way of getting to Hunstanton from any other point along the north Norfolk coast and/or Kings Lynn. The service is half hourly during the summer months and hourly during the rest of the year and is timetabled to meet trains at Kings Lynn. Check the coasthopper website or Facebook for the latest news.
www.coasthopper.co.uk www.facebook.com/coasthopper What to expect:. This section is a mixture of dune boardwalk, lonely oodbanks and marsh edge path. A quiet inland section provides stunning long views over the coast. There is a small amount of road walking on the inland section. Sea bank walking does not offer shelter. The wind, rain and sun on this part of the coast can be merciless, be prepared! What to look out for: The Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a wonderful mix of landscape, biodiversity, people and int and chalk built villages and churches. Without a doubt walking the Norfolk Coast Path is the best way of sampling this protected area. Visit www.norfolkcoastaonb.org.uk before you walk. What to expect: One stretch of ood defence bank giving great views of Overy harbour, beach walking, pinewoods and grass paths running beside salt marsh. Glorious views and the feeling of space. The path is on the beach between Burnham Overy and Holkham. Please do not walk through the dunes at Burnham Overy. The path between Wells and Stiffkey can get muddy following wet weather. What to look out for: Not to look out for but be aware of! - the nudist beach half way between Overy and Holkham. The Whirlygig, towards Stiffkey there is a circular WW2 concrete track used to launch model planes for target practice. Wells RNLI station and Wells harbour, not to mention the wonderful internationally important salt marsh and ever changing tide. Holkham- 0.5m from the trail. Weybourne to Cromer Getting there
The Norfolk Coast Path ends at Cromer Pier TG219423 (This is also the start of the Weavers Way if you dont feel ready to stop, 58 miles to Great Yarmouth) By train: Cromer has good rail connections via The Bittern Line with Norwich and Cambridge. By bus: The Coasthopper bus service is the best way of getting to/from Cromer to/from any other point along the north Norfolk coast. The service is half hourly during the Summer months and hourly during the rest of the year. What to expect: A well earned rest from shingle and spectacular views from cliff walking. Just after Sheringham and Beeston Bump the path heads inland crossing the single track Cromer to Sheringham railway line on its way to Roman Camp. Abbs Common is in a small valley, from where there is an ancient sunken path cocooned beneath overhanging trees westwards before reaching civilisation again at Cromer. What to look out for: Longshore shermen and their boats at Weybourne, the old coastguard station, ships headed for the Wash ports of Kings Lynn, Boston and Sutton Bridge. The nostalgia from the smells and sounds of the North Norfolk Steam Railway. The cliffs and the higher land behind are all part of one of the largest glacial end moraines in the UK.. Upper Sheringham - 1.8m (2.9km) from the route.
