Activity 1 Warm-Up (7 minutes) T asks Ss questions about their Easter holidays and then checks homework and makes error corrections, if any. T then gets into the topic by asking Ss to look at some pictures describing a happy, healthy non-polluted Earth vs. an unhappy, sick and polluted Earth. T asks Ss to compare and contrast the pictures orally and elicits a series of global environmental problems. T writes the word Environment on the blackboard and has Ss complete a word web listing environmental problems. Activity 2 Pre-Reading (8 minutes) T highlights the importance of environmental protection and points out the fact that Earth Day is a day celebrated each year and is marked by events held worldwide to increase awareness and appreciation of the Earths natural environment. T asks Ss to answer a short set of questions to see if they are eco-friendly. Ss, individually, answer Yes or No to the questions. Ss report their answers to the class and briefly discuss about the steps that should be taken towards becoming eco-friendly (what it means and what it takes to be eco-friendly). Activity 3 While-Reading (15 minutes) T has Ss practise chain reading by looking over a text and read about environmental protection and Earth Day. T checks Ss grasp of the overall meaning of the text, writes any new words on the blackboard and provides additional explanations, where necessary. Ss then work on a set of exercises to check comprehension (multiple choice, word matching, and gap-filling exercises). Activity 4 After-Reading (8 minutes) Ss draw tickets to identify up to 50 ways to save the planet and must choose 10 ways they consider to be the most important. Ss exchange opinions on the topic, argue their point of view and give examples to support their ideas. Activity 5 Follow-Up (10 minutes) T has Ss work in groups and draw up a graphic organiser entitled Go Green Week in order to raise awareness of the many ways people can help save our planet. Ss plan to do something green every day. Their goal is to have the maximum positive impact for the environment. T highlights the best ideas and makes a general appreciation of Ss work during class. T helps Ss draw conclusions on the topic discussed and assigns homework. HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT (2 minutes): Ss must devise a green poster entitled Help save the planet and write about some ways they can help save the planet by reducing, reusing and recycling. Ss must try to find pictures or make drawings to illustrate their ideas.
