Microsoft Windows Vista

IPA Help 2.1 has been tested on Windows Vista. Here are a few issues for Windows Vista users to consider: IPA Help settings are stored in C:\Program Files\SIL\IPA Help. On Windows Vista, settings changes are redirected by the operating system to the users Virtual Store. This has the following effects:

Every user starts with the default settings, regardless of any prior settings changes other users have made. Word lists can be created and edited by any user. New and edited files, however, may only be accessed by the user who created or edited the word list. To make a new or edited word list available to all users on the machine, a user with administrator privileges must manually copy the new or edited file to the C:\Program Files\SIL\IPA Help folder.

Non-English Versions of Microsoft Windows

Phonetic symbols may not display correctly on some non-English versions of Microsoft Windows which use a different code page. (For example, Chinese and Korean Windows have the problem. French does not.) To correct this symbol display problem, set the language for nonUnicode programs to English by doing the following (Windows XP terms shown): 1. In Control Panel, double-click Regional and Language Options. The Regional and Language Options dialog box appears. 2. Click Advanced. 3. Under Language for non-Unicode programs, select English (United States). 4. Click OK. 5. Click Yes. 6. Click Yes to reboot. If the problem persists, follow the procedure under Phonetic Fonts in the Known Issues section.

Keyman
Tavultesoft Keyman is not required. However, if you want to create Word Lists, Keyman version 6 (or newer) is recommended to type transcriptions in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). For more information on the Web, go to http://www.tavultesoft.com/keyman/editions.php. IPA Help provides a Keyman keyboard and keying chart for typing IPA characters in the ASAP IPA fonts. The keyboard file to install is C:\Program Files\SIL\IPA Help\IPA-ASAP.kmx. The keying chart can be found at C:\Program Files\SIL\IPA Help\ IPA-ASAP Keying Chart.rtf.

Known Issues
Phonetic Fonts
If the symbols on the charts are not phonetic symbols, the phonetic fonts IPA Help uses have been removed. This can happen when an older version of IPA Help or Speech Tools is removed. The next time IPA Help runs, the installer will attempt to automatically repair the fonts (you may be prompted to insert the installation CD). For administrative users, this repair should succeed. Non-administrative users may see the following message: Error 1706: No valid source could be found for product IPA Help. Windows Installer cannot continue. To repair the fonts, do the following after logging on an administrative user account (Windows XP terms shown): 1. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.

IPA Help 2.1 ReadMe The Add or Remove Programs dialog box appears. 2. Select IPA Help from the list. 3. Click Change. The IPA Help Setup wizard appears. 4. Select Repair. 5. Click Next twice. The repair installation runs. 6. If prompted, insert the installation CD and click OK. 7. Click Finish. 8. Close the Add or Remove Programs dialog box. If symbols still display incorrectly, restart the computer.

Intervocalic Button
The intervocalic button is active for examples of diacritics on vowels. There are no intervocalic examples for diacritics on vowels.

Word List Test Audio

The audio for tests on word lists often starts before the test dialog appears, giving the user little or no time to enter a transcription for the first item.

Removing IPA Help

You should remove any version of IPA Help or Speech Tools you are no longer using. Removing IPA Help or Speech Tools will not delete your word lists. 1. In Control Panel, double-click Programs and Features (Windows Vista) or Add or Remove Programs (Windows XP or 2000). 2. Select one of the following from the list of currently installed programs: To remove an older version of IPA Help, select Speech Tools. To remove the current version of IPA Help, select IPA Help. 3. Click Uninstall (Windows Vista) or Remove (Windows XP or 2000). 4. Click Yes. Note: previous versions of IPA Help have been bundled in the Speech Tools package. Removing Speech Tools also removes any other currently installed Speech Tools applications including Speech Analyzer and Phonology Assistant.
