Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Estimating Solutions Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should

be able to estimate a solution by rounding each number to one significant figure. Most students should be able to estimate a solution by rounding each number to one significant figure and the nearest square number. Some students should be able to estimate solutions using a combination of rounding to the nearest significant figure, square/cube number or square root. Key words: Estimation, Estimate, Approximately, Significant Figure. Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Recap rounding numbers to one significant figure. Pose the question What makes a digit the most significant? Ideal response would indicate that it would have the highest place value. Work through the first couple of problems presented on the first slide then have the students present their solutions to the rest on mini-whiteboards for teachers assessment. Development Pose the first problem on the second slide and ask the students if they can quickly estimate the solution using mental methods. Discuss how the exactness of the numbers make the question appear difficult which implies they need to be written simpler, or approximated. Round each number in the problem to one significant figure to approximate them. Once the estimate is calculated students should check the accuracy by evaluating the actual question with the use of a calculator. For terms involving squares and square roots students should be encouraged to find for themselves an alternative way of approximating the value so that the calculation becomes easier. They may need guidance with this. Use the interactive Excel file for additional practise. Students should then work through the third slide independently checking their answers as they go through comparing the actual answer from a calculator to their estimate. Plenary Present the problem on the final slide. Some of the numbers to the right of the problem need to be selected in order for the sentence to be correct. Students should see for themselves that the values need be rounded first in order for them to be selected or discounted. Having the students present their solutions on mini-whiteboards will enable summative assessments to be made. Differentiation More able: Having students determine the upper and lower bound of a question would extend the idea of the limits of accuracy. Less Able Avoiding squares and square roots would enable the students to practise rounding to a significant figure. Emphasis should be placed on comparing their solutions to the calculated answer so they are able to consolidate effective use of a calculator.
