PART - B (5 x 12 = 60 MARKS) ANSWER ANY FIVE QUESTIONS

21 Determine the diameter of a circular rod made of ductile material with an endurance limit of 25 MPa and tensile yield strength of 350 MPa. The member is subjected to a varying axial load from-300 kN to 700 kN and has a stress concentration factor is 1.8. Take factor of safety as 2.

22. A steel member is subjected to a 3 dimensional stress system and the resulting principal stresses are 120 N/mm2 tension, 80 N/mm2 and 40 N/mm2 compression. If the proportional limit of the material in simple tension is 280 N/mm and its poisqn's ratio is 0.3 determine the factor of safety according to a) Maximum principal stress theory b) Maximum principal strain theory and c) Maximum shear stress theory.

23. A solid circular shaft is subjected to a bending moment of 3000 N-m and torque of 1000 Nm. The shaft is made of 45C8 steel having ultimate tensile stress of 700 MPa and an ultimate shear stress of 500 MPa. Assuming a factor of safety as 6, determine the diameter of the shaft.

24. Determine the dimensions of the rectangular sunk key made up of mild steel for an 80 mm diameter mild steel shaft to transmit a torque of 135 N-m. Assume shear stress 50 N/mm and crushing stress 120 N/mm .

25. A semi elliptical spring has 10 leaves with two full length leaves extending 650 mm. It is 65 mm wide and is made of 7 mm thick Design a helical spring, with mean coil diameter 100 mm, which will have approximately the san:,e values of induced stress and deflection for any load.

26. A 50 mm diameter solid shaft is welded to a flat plate by 8 mm fillet weld. Determine the maximum torque that the welded joint can sustain if the permissible shear stress intensity in the weld material is not exceeding 70 MPa.

27. A multi cylinder engine is to run at a constant load at a speed of 600 rpm. On drawing the crank effort diagram to scale of 1 mm=250 N-m and 1 mm= 30, the areas in square mm above and below the mean torque line were measured and found to be in order +160, -172, +168, -191, +197 and -162. The speed is to be kept within 1% of the mean speed of the engine. Determine the moment of inertia of the flywheel.

28. Design a journal bearing for a centrifugal pump to the following specifications. Diameter of the Journal=75 mm Speed of the journal=1140 rpm Load on each journal=11500 N.
