The banana is a tropical fruit. It grows well in warm countries. It is grown on plantations in many places. The original home of the banana is the East Indies and Malaysia. A banana plant grows into a tree that is as tall as six metres. After about nine or ten months, the plant flowers. A single bunch of fruit forms at the crown of each plant. When the bunch is about four months old, it is ready to be cut. At this time the bunch of fruit weighs anything from 2065kg. There may be as many as 150 individual bananas on the bunch. Each banana is known as a finger. The fingers grow in clutches of 10 20, each of which is call a hand or comb. Bananas are harvested while they are still green. They are transported to other countries in fast ships.
