4.3 Teaching Observation Due to unavoidable problem (the schools administration didnt know whom to refer us to, so we kind of abandoned few days earlier) I only managed to conduct my teaching observation on the last day of SOP (12 th Jan 07). I have entered Pn.Rozayatis class in the morning session (this happened before we; the TESL trainees, were thrown to the evening session). The class is 4 Azam (class with good students proficiency in English) and because today is Friday, time allocation for each period is shortened to 30 minutes per period. As I entered the class, Pn.Rozayati introduced me and informed the class the reason of my presence; most of the students gave me the puzzled look. Pn.Rozayati started the lesson by asking students randomly to recap their previous lesson. Then, she tested the students with questions on that matter and asked them to copy the exercise in their book. I found that time flew very fast in real classroom situation. The teacher has to be an expert in time management in order to allocate appropriate time for each activity. Other than that, I also found that teacher need to improvise their teaching approach in each class they are about to teach. In 4 Azam; for this group of students English is easy for them compared to Malay, for example, Pn.Rozayati face the problem in which students like to ask easy questions in which they already know the answer; this action is only intended to waste the teachers time. So, she handled this situation by asking the students back to find the answer for their own question and it did work to stop students from repeating the inappropriate behaviour. Differently, in low proficiency class, other method should be used to approach the students to make them interested in English lesson. These kinds of situation did make my nerves rack. Teaching is not an easy work to do, it is easier to say unless you have felt and experienced the burden by your own. Plus, I didnt have enough time to observe more classes and learn how the teachers conduct and control the lesson simultaneously. However, I will apply and utilize the knowledge Ive gained throughout these years to ensure my teaching practice will be a great experience for me.

PROGRAM

5.0 CONCLUSION Ive been through a tremendous opening eye experience during one week of SOP at SMK Sek.7. The exposure has given me an insight on the school and what to expect from the teachers and students, and how to prepare myself physically and emotionally in order to adapt with the schools culture and environment. Overall, I can say that this school is among the best in terms of infrastructure and the school culture. This school is one of the Sekolah Contoh and also being awarded Sekolah Harapan at district level and being nominated at state level. However, the management and administration has to be improved to ensure the school excellence in the future. This school is a new school; it still in its learning phase, and problems might occur due from lack of experience in handling it. All teachers here, especially my mentor; Mrs.Margaret Chia, did helped me a lot and always guide and advice me on how to face the challenges in teaching profession. Other teachers also share their experience and knowledge with me and treat me as one of the team which makes me feels easy to mingle and work with them. The Principal, Heads of Panels teachers and seniors teachers also guide me a lot during my observation without any prejudice or status conscious even though I am only the practical teacher. Students, from all races and religions, also gave good co-operation in each programme implemented. Like other schools, disciplined problems are among students also a major problem here. Apparently, next week will be my first day of real teaching (though I havent got the timetable yet!) in the classroom. One thing for sure, the experience will be totally different from what Ive been through this SOP week (TESL trainees were transferred to afternoon session; we only knew about it on Friday!). Its hard for me to predict anything, how to teach or what approach should I use to teach until I get to know my students in the evening session. Hopefully, I can get through the obstacles and be a good dedicated teacher in these coming 10 weeks! Last but not least, I hope the experienced Ive gained from my observation at this school will help me to improve myself in teaching profession for the sake of my religion, race and country, especially in educating students to become a useful, intellectual, high skilled and religious person in the future!
