ACS6101 Assignment 17 October 2011

Module Name: ACS6101: Foundations of Control Systems
Classical Control System Analysis and Design
Tutor: Andy Rawsthorne
[email protected]
Title of Coursework: Control systems analysis and design using root locus and Bode
diagram methods
Handing-In Date: Monday 5 November 2012
To be submitted in MOLE ONLY as a MS Word document
Use code ACS6101/AR.04 on the cover sheet
Page Limits: 16 A4 Pages

General Information
- This coursework comprises 30% of the module mark for ACS6101.
- All reports should be word processed.
- Figures should be incorporated into the document in appropriate places and
suitably sized for the information contained, not placed as appendices.
- The report should be properly structured (with sections etc) so that it is self
contained (do not assume the reader has access to the question sheet) and is
easy to read. Think about how the information can be presented so that a
reader can understand the key points most efficiently.
- Make sure the title page gives clear information on author, topic, content, etc.
- This is an M.Sc so many of the marks will be for interpretation. There is no
single correct answer so you must justify your answer carefully. If necessary
introduce logical criteria to justify your answers. Demonstrate your
knowledge of the topic concisely - you are not writing a text book.

Teaching Outcomes:
On completion of the assignment, a student should demonstrate
- Understanding of the design methodologies for lead, lag and PID
compensators based on root locus and Bode diagram.
- Ability to design and test a controller starting from performance
specifications.
- Ability to use MATLAB in the design process.
Notes
- Remember that in an assignment, there is often no standard staff answer.
You have the freedom to investigate any aspect of the problem that you think
is relevant. Credit will be given for those students who display creative and
investigative skills in their submitted work.
- If you cannot meet the specification of the problem exactly with your solution,
submit that part you have succeeded with rather than nothing at all. Credit will
be given to those students who have carried out a second iteration of the
design process and have succeeded to improve the performance compared
with the initial design.
- You are reminded that this assignment must be carried out independently and
the written submission must be the students own work.
- Make sure that you explain clearly all calculation steps, the notation used and
the choices you made during the design process.

1. A unity feedback position control system has the forward path transfer
function G(s)

) 8 )( 5 (
) (
+ +
=
s s s
K
s G

A cascade compensator G
c
(s) is to be introduced in the forward path, in the
unity feedback configuration.

(a) Using the root locus approach, design a phase lead compensator to
meet the following performance specifications:
a. The overshoot is less than 10%
b. The settling time is less than 1 second
[8 marks]
(b) Using the bode approach, design an additional lag compensator (in
series with the lead compensator designed in a)) so that K
v
, the
velocity error constant for the resulting system, is at least 40.
[6 marks]
(c) Use MATLAB to plot the response of your final design to a unit ramp.
[2 marks]
(d) Use MATLAB to evaluate the performance of your final design in the
time and frequency domain. Redesign if simulations show that
requirements have not been met.
[4 marks]

2. Consider again the unity feedback control system where the plant transfer
function is given by

) 8 )( 5 (
) (
+ +
=
s s s
K
s G

(a) Using the frequency response approach, determine the gain K required
to yield about 10% overshoot. Make use of the second order
approximations as needed.
[6 marks]
(b) Using the frequency response approach, design a phase lead
compensator so that steady state error is 5% and the overshoot is less
than 10%.
[6 marks]
(c) Use MATLAB to plot the response of the control system designed in
b) to a unit ramp.
[2 marks]
(d) Use MATLAB to evaluate the performance of the design obtained in
b) in the time and frequency domain. Redesign if simulations show
that requirements have not been met. Compare and discuss the
performance of the control systems designed in questions 1 and 2.
[6 marks]

3. Consider the unity feedback system with

s G

a) Using the analytical technique covered in the lecture, design a PID
controller to yield
- A peak time T
p
<0.5 seconds for a step input
- An overshoot P.O.<10%
Use the second-order approximation of the peak time

and the formula

[12 marks]

b) Use MATLAB to plot the response of your design to a unit step.
[2 marks]

c) Use MATLAB to evaluate the performance of your design in the
time and frequency domain. Redesign if simulations show that
requirements have not been met.
[6 marks]

4.
Write a 1 page reflection detailing the observation and behaviour of a
real world control system when controlling a physical system.
Comment on the performance measures/specifications, and responses
covered in the lectures. Focussing specifically on:

Stability of the system
Transient response (P.O, Ts, Tr etc)
Steady state error
Sensitivity to external disturbance

Try to take and include any quantitative measurements from your
particular system and include any relevant figures or diagrams.
Include a conclusion, and detail any problems encountered with the
implemented controller of your system.
