The document discusses the life and martyrdom of St Paraskeve of Rome on her feast day of July 26th.

St Paraskeve was born in Rome to Christian parents and was well educated. She used her inheritance to support a home for virgins and preach the gospel while caring for the sick and destitute.

After her parents died, St Paraskeve sold her possessions and used the money to relieve human suffering and support a home for virgins where they prayed, fasted and did charitable works.

St Paraskevi Great Virgin Martyr of Rome

St Paraskevi was born in a village near Rome during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117-138) to pious Christians - St Agathonikos (Agathon) and St Politea who had prayed fervently for a child. When God finally Blessed them, they named their daughter in honour of Friday Paraskevi (" F RIDAY " O R " P REPARAT ION " I N G REEK ) the Day of our Lords Great Suffering and Crucifixion. St Paraskevi received an excellent secular and Spiritual Education. She was a very good Philosopher and she often conversed with other women concerning our True Faith and tried to Enlighten them accordingly with Christs Divine Truth. Many distinguished families wanted this beautiful, educated and rich woman to marry their sons. Her understanding and kindness made her even more desirable. However, having a Higher Goal in life, St Paraskevi rejected all marriage proposals. When St Paraskevi was 20 years old, both her parents died 1eaving her as the sole heir to the family fortune. Filled with the Love of Christ and profound Faith, she sold all her worldly possessions and used the money to relieve human suffering. A portion of her inheritance supported a home for Reverent Virgins (Nuns) who stayed in a Kenobion - a type of commune like a contemporary Monastery where they prayed and Fasted, and fulfilled all types of charitable works, including the teaching of Christs Salvation to Hebrew and pagan women. St Paraskevi left Rome at the age of 30 to fufil her Holy Mission. Passing through many cities and villages, she preached our Faith while caring for the sick and the destitute, despite the intense persecution of Christians by both Jews and Romans. Emperor Antoninus Pius (138-161) ruled Rome at this time, but he did not execute Christians without a trial and tried to protect them against the blind mania of fanatical Jews and Romans, even though anyone could be arrested and tried if another citizen lodged a formal complaint against them. Eventually, however, Emperor Antoninus had to repeal this law due to many disasters which had befallen Rome and which were blamed on the Christians by their enemies. Strong in Faith, well educated and eloquent, St Paraskevi spoke persuasively to her fellow Roman citizens, leading them from Judaism or idolatry to Faith in Christ. Eventually, her Holy Mission was brought to the attention of the Emperor when she had returned to Rome and several Jews had filed complaints against her. Emperor Antoninus summoned St Paraskevi to his palace to question her and being attracted by her beauty and Humility he gently tried to persuade her to renounce her Faith, even offering to marry her and make her his Empress. To his utter astonishment, St Paraskevi politely rejected all his offers and steadfastly remained true to Christ, which angerd the Emperor to such a degree that he wanted to break her down by means of the most cruel torture. So she was arrested and handed over to the brutality of the executioners, who forced a steel helmet lined with nails upon her head, which they then compressed with a vice. But it had no effect on St Paraskevi and such a Divine Miracle caused many of the witnesses to accept Christ as their Lord and Saviour. Thrown into prison, St Paraskevi besought God to give her the Strength to face the terrors that awaited her. The following day her Martyrdom continued. She was hung by her hair while her hands and arms were burnt with flaming torches yet although she suffered greatly, she refused to submit to their demands to renounce Christ. Her frustrated torturers then immersed her in a large cauldron of boiling oil and tar, but they were shocked to see that St Paraskevi stood calmly in it as if being refreshed rather than being burnt alive. The Emperor thought that she was using sorcery to keep the oil and tar cool so that it did not harm her so he approached the cauldron only to be blinded by the boiling hot steam and searing emissions of the bubbling tar. In extreme pain and being terrified by what he had witnessed, the mighty Emperor begged St Paraskevi to heal him. Whereupon she prayed to Christ to have Mercy on her persecutor before saying to Antoninus: Emperor, the Christian God is healing you from the blindness that was given to you as a punishment. As the Emperor regained his sight, he was deeply humbled by the Great Miracles he had experienced and also utterly grateful for his healing so he immediately freed St 2.

Paraskevi and permitted her to continue her Holy Mission. He also put an end to all persecutions against Christians throughout the Roman Empire. Thus it became very clear to everyone especially Christians - that St Paraskevi has received the Gracious Gift of Intercessory Prayers for the healing of those with visual ailments, which continues to this very day. This peaceful period was brief for after Emperor Antoninus' death in 161, a plague broke out throughout the Roman Empire, which the pagans claimed to be a sign from their gods that that they were angered by the tolerance of Christianity. Consequently, Emperor Antoninus' successor, Marcus Aurelius (161-180), changed the laws dealing with "non-believers" and the terrible, brutal persecutions against Christians were resumed. Despite these dangers, St Paraskevi persevered in her Missionary Endeavours, spreading the loving, salvific Holy Gospel of Christ wherever she travelled, until by authority of Emperor Aurelius, the Provincial Eparchs, Asclepius and Tarasios, ordered the arrest of St Paraskevi. Refusing their demands to offer sacrifices to pagan gods, St Paraskevi was thrown into a snake pit and as she made the Sign of the Cross over the dangerous serpent, it immediately perished. Governor Asclepius had heard of the previous Miracles concerning St Paraskevi, and he realized that a Great and Mighty Power guarded her so he decided to grant her freedom, Furthermore, he and his entire court were converted to Christianity, joyfully accepting Holy Baptism. Governor Tarasios, however, was far less tolerant and upon his orders, St Paraskevi was siezed, tied up and viciously beaten, after which she was imprisoned, with a huge, heavy rock placed on her chest to slowly suffocate her. However, having ceaselessly prayed to Christ to grant her the Strength to endure her ordeal, she once again, by the Grace of God, survived. Then St Paraskevi was taken to the Temple of Apollo, while everyone praised the arrogant Governor Tarasios, for having (supposedly) succeeded in breaking the Faith of St Paraskevi so that she was ready to offer the necessary homage to their lifeless idols. However, upon entering the temple, the Great Holy Martyr raised her hand and made the Sign of the Cross, whereupon an extremely loud, deafening noise was heard as all the idols in the temple exploded into dust! The terrified priests and idolaters dragged her from the altar, beat her, and pushed her out of the temple and they demanded her immediate execution by beheading. As it was customary to grant the condemned a last wish, St Paraskevi asked to be left alone for a few moments so that she might pray for the last time. After a while the executioners returned and beheaded her by sword. Many Healing Miracles throughout the ages have continued to occur as a result of St Paraskevis Intercessory Prayers. By mere contact with her grave and her Sanctified Holy Relics, cripples have been able to walk, the demonised have returned to full health and the infertile have borne healthy children. Most significant of all, having restored the sight of the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius so many centuries ago through her Intercessory Prayers of Compassion, St Paraskevi continues to Intercede for all those who have diverse serious problems with their eyes. Her remains were eventually transferred to Constantinople, where they continue to be venerated by the Faithful. Appropriate to Thy Calling, O Champion Paraskevi, Thou worshipped with the readiness Thyname bears. For an Abode Thou obtained Faith, which is Thy namesake. Wherefore, Thou pour forth Healing and Intercede for our souls. O Most Majestic One, we have discovered Thy Temple to be a Spiritual Clinic wherein all the Faithful resoundingly honour Thee, O famed and venerable martyr Paraskevi.
