Colonial LM

CTFA/INCI: Magnesium Lauryl Sulfate

DESCRIPTION
Colonial LM offers the formulator a practical combination of properties within the
household and cosmetic field. The aqueous concentrate of magnesium lauryl sulfate has
a low cloud point, facilitating the formulation of clear liquid shampoos; it is remarkably
effective in reducing interfacial tension—a necessary property for bubble bath products.
Its “dry foam” detergency favors its use as an ingredient in carpet cleaning specialties.

APPLICATIONS
Colonial LM is a high quality grade of magnesium lauryl sulfate and thus should be
evaluated by manufacturers of household cleaning products and cosmetics. Within the
latter field, the clarity of liquid shampoos depends a great deal on the cloud point of the
surfactant ingredient. Formulators will appreciate the low cloud point of Colonial LM.
In preparing bubble bath products, care must be exercised in selecting a surfactant
which promotes compatibility between the perfume, dye and other oils and water.

Colonial LM accomplishes this through its ability to reduce interfacial tension. Studies
with mineral oil and water show that less than 0.1% Colonial LM is sufficient to lower
interfacial tension to 5 dynes/cm.

The household cleaning products industry has for some time benefited from the use of
Colonial LM in rug and upholstery shampoos. Formulations are readily prepared from
Colonial LM which dry to a powder and can be removed by vacuuming. Colonial LM
leaves no sticky residue.

In a formulation like this, Colonial LM provides these desirable properties:

• Stable, dry foam
• Good soil removal
• Good soil retention to prevent “ring” formation
• Color fastness
• Safe on synthetics
• Low skin irritation

When ambient humidity is low, wool and nylon carpets build up a charge of static
electricity which can be a nuisance. The inclusion of an antistatic agent in the
formulation can prevent this.

FDA CLEARANCE
Colonial LM is cleared by the FDA for the use in certain food packaging applications.
Approval has been granted under Section 177.1200 of the Federal Register for the
inclusion of Colonial LM in cellophane.

Clearance has also been obtained for the use of Colonial LM in manufacturing
adhesives which may contact foodstuffs. The Federal Register reference is Section
121.2520 (c) (5).
