DESIGN MEMORANDUM ON DESIGN OF DIESEL GENERATOR ( D.G ) SET ROOM OF POWER HOUSE, ISP 1. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT :Indira Sagar project envisages construction of concrete gravity dam of 654 m length , 92 m high across the river Narmada near Punasa Village, District Khandwa Madhya Pradesh, for the purpose of hydroelectric power generation & Irrigation. The Spillway comprises 20 bays of size 20 m x 17m. The Power house is located on the right bank of the river Narmada and is fed through Head race channel with complete arrangement of control structures. The Power House has eight units of 125 MW each having the total installed capacity of 1000 MW with conventional Francis turbines. Overall dimensions of Power House are 202.00 m x 23.00 m x 59 m high. The units are fed through 8 penstocks of diameter 8.0 m laid in shafts having an inclination of 22, with a total discharge capacity of 2200 cumecs. The discharge from the Power House will be let into 850 m long Tail race Channel meeting the river in its natural path on the D/S end. The proposed irrigation outlet works of the Indira Sagar Project located on reservoir rim about 10 Km U/S of the Indira Sagar Dam known as Punasa facilities. The water for irrigation use is to be discharged through the control structure with varying head of 8 m to 22 m with maximum discharge of 160 cumecs giving rise to excellent possibilities of power generation. Therefore, a canal head Power House having an installed capacity of 15MW ( 3 x 5MW ) has been proposed along with the irrigation sluices.

INVESTIGATION /TESTS MADE FOR CALCULATION OF DATA :Geology I) Dam Seat : The main dam is located on quartzites of reddish colour and with small interbeddings of silt stone of purple colour belonging to Vindhyans ( Super Group ). The availability of sound and fairly impervious rock for the foundation of dam is within the reasonable depth.
II)
Power House site : The Power House is located on the stable right bank of the Narmada river in deep pit which is geologically less disturbed. The predominating rock is quartzite with interbedded thin plane of silt stone and is quite suitable for construction.

DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS :In reinforced concrete structures, in floor system consisting of several
beams cast monolithically with the slab, the intermediate beams act as T beam & the end beams act as L - beams In the case of simply supported beams the bending moment is of sagging nature throughout its length. Hence the slab
forming the flange of the T-beam is subjected to compression all along the span and the beam behaves as a T-beam the bending moment is of sagging nature at mid-span portion the beam top remains under compression between the points of zero being moment and hence the contribution of flange remains effective within
the mid-length the beam upto the points of zero bending moment, and the beam thus behaves as T-beam only for this length. Beyond the points of zero BM and over the supports, the flange of the beam is subjected to tension. All columns are subjected to some moment which may be due to accidental eccentricity or due to end restraint imposed by monolithically placed beams or slabs. The strength of a column depends on the strength of materials , shape and size of the cross section , length and the degree of positional and directional restraints at its ends. 6. DESIGN CRITERIA /CONDITION OF ANALYSIS :The analysis of doubly reinforced section involves the determination of the amount of moment of resistance knowing breath, depth, area of tension and compression steels and their covers. The analysis is similar to that for the singly reinforced sections except that the compressive force consists of two parts : in steel and in concrete. The stress in compression steel at the collapse limit state may be the yield stress or some what less depending on the position of the neutral axis. The stress in compression steel must be compatible with the strain in the compression steel. The analysis of columns & beams are done as per STAAD-PRO manual. 7. DESIGN CALCULATIONS :The design calculations are placed in Annexure II.
