1. Derive the general heat conduction equation in Cartesian coordinate system. 2. Derive the general heat conduction equation in cylindrical coordinate system. 3. Point out and explain the various factors which affect the thermal conductivity of a material. 4. A spherical shaped vessel of 2 m diameter is 200 mm thick. Find the rate of heat leakage, if the temperature difference between the inner and outer surfaces is 2400C. Thermal conductivity of the material of the sphere is 0.083 W/m0C. 5. A thin walled copper tube of radius 8 mm has been given a sheathing of cellular glass (k=0.055 W/m-deg). Estimate the thickness of insulation upto which heat transfer will increase. Take outside film coefficient ho=5 W/m-deg.

ASSIGNMENT-II

SUB: Heat & Mass Transfer (EME 504)

1. What do you understand by lumped-capacity? What are the physical dimensions necessary for a lumped unsteady state analysis to apply? 2. A vertical cylinder 3 m high and 180 mm in diameter is maintained at 100C in an atmospheric environment of 30C. Calculate the heat loss by free convection from the surface of the cylinder. Assume properties of air at mean temperature as, =1.06 kg/m3, =18.97 x 10-6 m2/s, Cp = 1.004 and k=0.1042 kj/mhC. 3. Derive expression for Temperature distribution and heat dissipation in case of straight fin insulated at the tip, fin losing heat at tip. 4. Two rods A and B of the same length and diameter protrude from a surface at 1300 C and are exposed to air at 250C. the temperature measured at the end of the rods are 500 C and 750 C. if thermal conductivity of material A is 20 W/m-deg, calculate the thermal conductivity of material B. adopt the condition of a fin insulated at the tip. 5. A long thin glass walled 0.3cm diameter, mercury thermometer is placed in a stream of air with convection coefficient of 50W m 2 K for measuring transient temperature of air. Consider cylindrical thermometer bulb consist of mercury only. For which k = 9W mK , = 0.017 m 2 hr . Calculate the time constant and time required for the temperature change to reach half of its initial value. ASSIGNMENT-III

1. Explain the hydrodynamic & thermal boundary layers. Derive energy equation for Thermal boundary layer over a flat plate. 2. What is natural convection? How it is differ from forced convection? 3. Discuss the significance of non-dimensional numbers in free convection. 4. Determine the friction factor, the pressure drop and pumping power for fully developed 0laminar flow of water at 20 0 C [ = 9.8 kg/(m-s) ; = 997.4 kg/m3]through a 2.5 cm diameter, 100 m long tube for a mass flow rate of 0.015 kg/s. What are the mean and maximum velocities of flow? 5. Water at 20 0 C with a mass flow rate of 5 kg/s enters a circular tube of 5 cm-ID and 10 m long. If the tube surface is maintained at 80 0 C, determine the exit temperature of water.
