(5 marks) A cantilever beam 8 m long having an I cross section as shown in Fig. Q5a carries a uniformly distributed load of 500 N/m over its whole length. (a) (b) Show that the second moment of area about its horizontal centroidal axis is 28.789 x 106 mm4. (4 marks) Calculate the maximum bending moment exerted on the beam and hence the maximum bending stress and state whether it is tensile, compressive or both. (8 marks) If the maximum bending stress is limited to 40 MN/m2, what is the maximum length of the cantilever beam. (6 marks)
(c)
When the beam section is used as shown in Fig. Q5b, its second moment of area about its horizontal centroidal axis is 4.362106 mm4. (d) Comparing the beam sections in Fig Q5a and Fig Q5b, determine which of the beams is stronger in bending? Justify your choice in terms of their respective section modulus. (4 marks)

A 4-wheeled vehicle has a total mass of 1800 kg. It is accelerated from rest to a velocity of 60 km/hr with a tractive effort 4.5 kN up the inclined plane of 1 in 8 as shown in Fig Q6. It has two axles, each with its two wheels has a mass of 200 kg and radius of gyration of 350 mm about its axis of rotation. The diameter of each wheel is 800 mm. The tractive resistance is 360 N. At the speed of 60 km/hr, determine: (a) (b) (c) the kinetic energy of translation of the vehicle. the kinetic energy of rotation of the wheels and axles. (4 marks) (6 marks)
the distance required to bring the vehicle from rest to 60 km/hr. (7 marks)
When the vehicle reaches 60 km/hr, the tractive effort is removed. If the tractive resistance remains the same, determine (d) the speed of the vehicle when it has travelled 75 m further up the inclined plane. (5 marks)
