About This School

The school’s goal is to prepare ethnically and economically diverse students for college, leadership, and life through
innovative instruction, a rigorous curriculum, and the use of technology. We aim to achieve our mission by creating a
student-centered environment that unifies the efforts of family, community, and school to foster life-long learning, cross-
cultural competency, social responsibility, and academic excellence. Our school follows Green Dot’s “Six Tenets”:
1. Small, safe personalized schools
2. High expectations for all students
3. Local control with extensive professional development and accountability
4. Parent Participation
5. Get every dollar into the classroom; and
6. Keep schools open later for community use.

Ánimo Justice is its third year of existence and currently serves 380 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students. Next year, we will
complete our expansion to a comprehensive 9-12th grade high school servicing a maximum of 550 students. Ánimo

School Description and Mission Statement (School Year 2007-08)

This section provides information about the school, its programs and its goals.
The Ánimo Justice Charter High School community is committed to implementing innovative, effective, and dynamic
teaching practices, techniques, and methods. Clear expectations and high standards of all students, teachers and
families, will lead to academic and personal success. By applying the use of resources, technology, and
family/community involvement, we will ensure the cultivation of an empowered youth. Aligned with the Green Dot
mission, our goal is to prepare students for college, leadership, and life.

Mission Statement:
Ánimo Justice Charter High School will develop an educational culture, by guiding students to become responsible,
empowered, and independent learners. Our school community will work collaboratively to prepare students to achieve
their academic potential and become agents for social change.

Opportunities for Parental Involvement (School Year 2007-08)

This section provides information about opportunities for parents to become involved with school activities.
Families are invited and expected to participate in their children’s educational experience at Ánimo Justice Charter High
School. Family involvement in a student’s education is one of the most important ingredients to student success, and
this school is committed to actively integrating parents and guardians into all aspects of their children’s educational
experiences. In keeping with this goal, a majority of our parents complete the required 35 hours of service every year.

Education programs for parents are important because many of them are unfamiliar with what a college preparatory high
school experience is like. For example, we host monthly parent workshops, ranging from topics such as using Power
School (our online grading system), Reality of Getting Your Child into College, to Utilizing Community Resources to
Improve our Neighborhoods. In addition to monthly parent workshops, we have set up 5 parent committees (Hosting
Social Events, Fundraising, Parent Advisory, Communication, and the Parent Volunteer) to facilitate and ensure parent
involvement.

IX. Student Performance
California Standards Tests
The California Standards Tests (CSTs) show how well students are doing in relation to the state content standards. The
CSTs include English-language arts (ELA) and mathematics in grades 2 through 11; science in grades 5, 8, and 9 through
11; and history-social science in grades 8, and 10 through 11. Student scores are reported as performance levels.
Detailed information regarding CST results for each grade and performance level, including the percent of students not
tested, can be found on the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Results Web page at http://star.cde.ca.gov. Note:
Scores are not shown when the number of students tested is 10 or less, either because the number of students in this
category is too small for statistical accuracy or to protect student privacy. In no case shall any group score be reported
that would deliberately or inadvertently make public the score or performance of any individual student.

X. Accountability
Academic Performance Index
The Academic Performance Index (API) is an annual measure of the academic performance and progress of schools in
California. API scores range from 200 to 1,000, with a statewide target of 800. Detailed information about the API can be
found at the API Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/ac/ap/.

API Ranks – Three-Year Comparison

This table displays the school’s statewide and similar schools API ranks. The statewide API rank ranges from 1 to 10. A
statewide rank of 1 means that the school has an API score in the lowest 10 percent of all schools in the state, while a
statewide rank of 10 means that the school has an API score in the highest 10 percent of all schools in the state. The
similar schools API rank reflects how a school compares to 100 statistically matched “similar schools.” A similar schools
rank of 1 means that the school’s academic performance is comparable to the lowest performing 10 schools of the 100
similar schools, while a similar schools rank of 10 means that the school’s academic performance is better than at least 90
of the 100 similar schools.

Adequate Yearly Progress
The federal NCLB Act requires that all schools and districts meet the following Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) criteria:
• Participation rate on the state’s standards-based assessments in English-language arts (ELA) and mathematics
• Percent proficient on the state’s standards-based assessments in ELA and mathematics
• API as an additional indicator
• Graduation rate (for secondary schools)
Detailed information about AYP, including participation rates and percent proficient results by student group, can be found

XI. School Completion and Postsecondary Preparation

Admission Requirements for California Public Universities

University of California
Admission requirements for the University of California (UC) follow guidelines set forth in the Master Plan, which requires
that the top one-eighth of the state’s high school graduates, as well as those transfer students who have successfully
completed specified college work, be eligible for admission to the UC. These requirements are designed to ensure that all
eligible students are adequately prepared for University-level work. For general admissions requirements please visit the
University of California Web site at http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/general.html.

California State University

Admission requirements for the California State University (CSU) use three factors to determine eligibility. They are
specific high school courses; grades in specified courses and test scores; and graduation from high school. Some
campuses have higher standards for particular majors or students who live outside the local campus area. Because of the
number of students who apply, a few campuses have higher standards (supplementary admission criteria) for all

Completion of High School Graduation Requirements

Students in California public schools must pass both the English-language arts and mathematics portions of the California
High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) to receive a high school diploma. For students who began the 2007-08 school
year in grade 12, as evidenced by that school year’s October CBEDS enrollment, this table displays by student group the
percent who met all state and local graduation requirements for grade 12 completion, including having passed both
portions of the CAHSEE or received a local waiver or state exemption. Detailed information about the CAHSEE can be
found at the CAHSEE Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/hs/. Note: "N/A" means that the student group is not
numerically significant.

Professional Development
This section provides information on the annual number of school days dedicated to staff development for the most recent
three-year period.
Ánimo Justice Charter High School has developed a comprehensive and rigorous professional development program
that is led by the principal and the Instructional Leadership Team. The Instructional Leadership Team is composed of the
assistant principal and all department chairpersons. The principal and assistant principal are the instructional leaders of
the school and guide professional development: Below are the key components of the program:

• Peer Observation: Periodic observations of a colleague to observe and debrief on best practices in the
classroom.
• Ten full days of professional development for school staff to plan for the year, reflect on best practices and
analyze data.
• Summer retreat: A two day retreat for school staff to evaluate progress, reflect, and adjust the school’s plan for
the upcoming school year.
• Weekly staff development: A late start is provided each week so that 80 minutes of professional development
can be built into the school day. In addition, another 40 minutes of professional development is built into the
Friday late start schedule every week.
• Green Dot Public Schools-wide staff development: Content area teachers meet to share best practices.
• New teacher orientation: two day intensive professional development session for all new teachers held before
the start of the school year.

A comprehensive professional development program is in place for Green Dot administrators which includes the
following:

• Coaching: Cluster Directors provide individualized coaching sessions for each school site administrator twice a
month. These coaching sessions are focused on the supervision of instruction.
• Key Results: Cluster Directors facilitate a Key Results session at one of their schools each month. During
these sessions, the principals within the cluster go to another school in the cluster for 3 hours. During this time,
the host principal provides a focus question for the session centered on instruction. Principals walk through
classrooms with this focus question in mind and provide the host principal with feedback about this focus
question. These sessions help principals share ideas with regards to the supervision of instruction and all
principals to generate next steps to be taken at their school sites as a result of what they see at the host school.
95/5: There is a full-day professional development session for principals and assistant principals once a month. These
sessions are focused on the themes the cluster directors are most relevant based on their coaching sessions.
