The Feng Shui Maneki Neko Lucky Cat is here! Maneki Neko means Beckoning Cat, Welcoming Cat or Lucky Cat. This lucky kitty comes in two poses Right Paw Up and Left Paw Up. It is said the right paw up attracts money while the left paw up attracts customers and the gem around the neck denotes wisdom. The traditional Maneki Neko has a gold bell around the neck. Regardless of which cat you choose, this little kitty will be sure to bring good luck. This pattern includes directions for making the Feng Shui Lucky Cat with right paw up and left paw up. For the face: 1. Either sew the nose with red embroidery floss or cut a small piece of red felt into a triangle glue or stitch the felt piece on kittys face. 2. With red embroidery floss, sew the mouth. 3. With black embroidery floss, sew the eyes and whiskers. Ears: (Make 2) Ch 2 Rnd 1: Work 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook = 5 sc Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc = 10 sc Rnd 3: *Sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc*, repeat from * around = 15 sc Rnds 4-5: Sc in each sc around Fasten off, Leave a tail long enough for sewing. Turn ears inside out. Do not stuff the ears. To cup the ears, fold in half. Sew ears on head. Using a cotton swab, liberally apply pink face blush inside of each ear. Head is done Now we work on the body. Stuff body firmly and sew opening closed. This will be the bottom. Thread this piece of yarn on to needle insert needle in bottom of body and bring yarn to top. You will use this piece of yarn to sew the head on to the body. Flatten bottom so kitty can sit. Sew head on body; weave in yarn.
Arms: (Make 2) Ch 2 Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook = 6 sc Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc = 12 sc Rnd 3-12: Sc in each sc around Fasten off, leave a tail long enough for sewing. Stuff arm firmly. Do not sew opening closed. Sew the waving paw on body facing up (1). For the second arm, curve the arm toward the kittys tummy (2). NOTE 1: For the right waving paw, with the arm facing up, sew the arm on the right side of the kitty, and for the left waving paw, sew the arm on the left side of the kitty. NOTE 2: To keep the second arm in place, sew the underside of the arm to the body. Paws: (Make 2 for the arms) Ch 8 Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, *work 1 HDC, 1 DC, 1 HDC in next st, sl st in next st*, repeat to end of row (3 scallops total). Fasten off. Leave a tail long enough for sewing. Sew the foundation chain on paw scalloped part should be facing out. Thread needle with red embroidery floss; sew between the 3 scallops. Hind Legs: (Make 2) Ch 2 Rnd 1: Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook = 6 sc Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around = 12 sc Rnd 3-7: Sc in each sc around Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing. Stuff legs lightly. Sew hind legs on side of body. Thread needle with red embroidery floss and sew 3 stitches for the toes on the hind legs.
Finishing: Thread the white embroidery floss through the bead (or the gold bell) wrap around neck loosely and knot in back of head. Place the bead (or bell) long enough in front so when the ribbon is tied around the neck, the bead (or bell) will hang below the ribbon. Tie the red ribbon around neck and tie into bow in back. Your Lucky Cat is done! Kitty measures 3-1/2 tall. Happy Crocheting!
