Elementary students race for education
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Cherry Hill Sun
J. F. Cooper Elementary School
held its first a Race for Educa-
tion, raising more than $11,000
for equipment and technology.
The event, organized by PTA
President Jayne Bloom, was full
of activities and events for stu-
dents.
I got the idea because
Voorhees schools have done it in
the past and have been really suc-
cessful, Bloom said.
Bloom was puzzled by the ex-
pense of taxes and how little the
budget contributed to play-
ground equipment and technolo-
gy in the classroom.
Were going to purchase a
Peaceful Playground, a new con-
cept to teach the kids a new way
to lead their own games and how
to deal with conflict, Bloom
said.
According to Bloom, Peaceful
Playgrounds is an
award-winning system used in
more than 8,000 schools nation-
wide, offering a series of more
than 100 age-appropriate, fun
games and learning activities
painted onto existing playground
surfaces.
The strategy is far more effec-
tive than purchasing equipment.
Staff and students will be taught
consistent game rules and strate-
gies to resolve disagreements
that can arise during play, and
given the skills to solve the typi-
cal skirmishes that occur during
recess. The children will be
learning essential life skills in-
cluding leadership, empathy and
resilience.
Currently, the PTA has a $1,500
grant from the Jewish Communi-
ties League and the Anti-Defama-
tion League to contribute to the
cause.
The bigger thing, which costs
more money, is technology,
Bloom said. We made a goal so
that each grade has its own lap-
tops.
According to Bloom, the Cher-
ry Hill Education Foundation
also contributed $5,000 to the
cause.
PTA's goal is to purchase
enough laptops so that there will
be a ratio of one for every two
students at the school, Bloom
said.
Students were required to
write letters to friends, family,
neighbors and parents places of
business to raise the money.
Its one aspect I really liked
about the fundraiser. It got every-
one involved. Teachers, students
and parents all had a hand in
this, Bloom said.
Students were given incentives
to write the letters, which includ-
ed homework passes.
The student who writes the
most letters will have the oppor-

Atco school raised $15k
from similar event
tunity to dunk the principal.
There are a lot of compo-
nents. The kids were writing in
the school and everyone wants
kids to get more exercise. The
kids raced and ran around the
school, Bloom said.
In addition, DJ Mom, mother
of five Jennifer Sullivan, provid-
ed tunes for the event.
We adults were a bit worried
about the heat, but it didnt get in
the way of the fun, Bloom said.
In fact, it added to the enjoy-
ment. We had spritzer bottles and
a sprinkler set up which turned
out to be a huge highlight of a
perfect event. Almost every kid
was soaked after the hour of rac-
ing.
Both the superintendent of
schools, Maureen Reusche, and
Mayor Chuck Cahn attended the
event. According to the testimo-
nials page for a Race for Educa-
tion, the Assumption School in
Atco was able to raise $15,000
from the event.
We were very pleased with
our success of the day and hope
to build on this in our future
Race for Education events. We
raised $15,000, surpassing our
goal of $10,000, which was a great
success for us, the website said.
Bloom is optimistic other
schools in the district will follow
J. F. Cooper Elementary Schools
lead to provide more for the stu-
dents.
Besides the fact that the kids
had a blast, this event was great
because it was real community
building, Bloom said. We need-
ed the parents to help to get the
sponsors, the teachers to help
with the persuasive letter writing
and the business community was
amazing with donations of food,
prizes and gift cards.

T
he late U.S. Sen. Frank Lauten-
berg wasnt even in his grave
yet, when the political maneu-
vering began.
The death of the 89-year-old New
Jersey Democrat on June 3 presented
Gov. Christie with several options, but
he has chosen one that will cost tax-
payers wallets dearly. Instead of al-
lowing voters to choose Lautenbergs
successor in the Nov. 5 general elec-
tion, hes ordering a special election
less than three weeks before on
Wednesday, Oct. 16.
The cost of an Aug. 13 primary and
an Oct. 16 special election is $24 mil-
lion. Since the governor has already
chosen New Jersey Attorney General
Jeff Chiesa as the interim replace-
ment, we wonder whats the harm in
saving taxpayers a bundle by allowing
Chiesa to hang on to the job three
weeks longer so that the cost of a spe-
cial election can be avoided. Democra-
cy is priceless, but is something else
going on here?
State Sen. Barbara Buono, whose
gubernatorial campaign against
Christie might have benefited from the
coattails of a strong Democratic U.S.
Senate candidate on the same Nov. 5
ballot, wasted no time taking the offen-
sive.
Earlier this year, the governor
cited money as to why he vetoed early
voting, Buono said in a press state-
ment, referring to Christies May 9
veto of legislation that would have let
people cast ballots during a 15-day pe-
riod before Election Day. However, de-
spite costing millions of dollars, Gov.
Christie made the cynical and arro-
gant decision to call a special election
in October.
Buono may not be without her own
political motives in this controversy,
but she makes a valid point.
As the governor, Christie has the
right to take advantage of the power of
his position, and he did just that. We
just wish it wasnt costing so much.
Christies costly move
Special election for Lautenbergs replacement will cost $24M

Five-year-old Cary Bloom cools off with a sno-cone and a banana in hand at the Race for Educa-
tion fundraiser at J. F. Cooper Elementary School. Approximately $11,000 for equipment and
technology was raised through letters written by students for donations. Besides the fact that
the kids had a blast, this event was great because it was real community building, said Jayne
Bloom, PTA president. We needed the parents to help to get the sponsors, the teachers to help
with the persuasive letter writing and the business community was amazing with donations of
food, prizes and gift cards.

Mayor Chuck Cahn, council
and freeholders will rededicate
Erlton South neighborhoods
playground on June 19.
A $25,000 grant from Camden
County, in addition to capital
funds from the township, funded
the project.
Every park and playground
we have has a natural lifespan
and needs to be upgraded, said
Bridget Palmer, township com-
munications director.
According to Ericha Farring-
ton, Recreation Department spe-
cial events coordinator, new fit-
ness equipment and instruction-
al signs were placed at the park,
new swings were installed, two
new pieces of climbing and tun-
neling pieces for children ages 2
to 5 were added, the softball field
was reshaped, regraded and
resurfaced with new infield dirt
and, on June 13, the tennis court
will be resurfaced, set for comple-
tion on June 18.
Additionally, as part of general
maintenance, the park received
all new mulch, new swings and
new nets for tennis, basketball
and hockey, according to Farring-
ton.
Susanne Bromke, president of
Erlton South Civic Association,
is excited for the finished project.
Erlton is one of the oldest
neighborhoods in Cherry Hill,
and when the Erlton School was
torn down, the civic association
had to fight for it to be turned
into a park and not condomini-
ums or worse, Bromke said.
This all happened many years
ago, and the park equipment has
not been upgraded since I moved
into the neighborhood 13 years
ago.
The park is heavily used by
our residents, as well as people
from Cherry Park condos down
the road. The Erlton South Civic
Association has several events in
the park every year so we are
thrilled it is getting a facelift.
The township manages 52
parks and playgrounds, accord-
ing to Palmer.
This was one of the parks
that was coming to the end of the
useful life. We applied for any
grants we could and we moved
forward with the improvements,
Palmer said. Its something we
do for all the playgrounds across
town. Every couple years we do
one or two.
Bromke is happy the play-
ground was finished before Inde-
pendence Day.
The civic association is prob-
ably the most vocal and active in
Cherry Hill, Bromke said. We
host an annual Independence
Day Parade, the Erlton Egg Hunt
and Halloween in the park as well
as look out for the residents when
it comes to township changes
that affect Cherry Hill and our
neighborhood.
According to Palmer, rededica-
tion of the park will include re-
freshments and plenty of time for
families to get reacquainted with
the area.
Hopefully it will be a nice way
to start summer celebration at
the new playground the township
built for them, Palmer said.
According to Palmer, the town-
ship is an advocate of an active
lifestyle for its residents.
We try to promote recreation-
al activities, especially outdoors
when school is over. It gets them
outside, Palmer said.
Its definitely something the
mayor and council are proud to
do. Theyre looking forward to
celebrating it with everyone.
