Introduction
Sometimes a users real test requirement relies on the successful emulation of a packet-switched data connection to deliver the highest throughput possible to a mobile device or application. When that connection does not work as expected, it makes testing all but impossible. This application note is meant to provide a framework for troubleshooting call processing connections from Radio Bearer (RB) test mode through PacketSwitched (PS) data connections. This article assumes the user has set up their 8960 based test system as described in FTP application note. (Please refer to http://cp.literature.agilent.com/litweb/pdf/5989-9598EN). This application note applies to the E6703E/U W-CDMA/HSPA lab applications with the latest 8960 (E5515C) hardware upgrades available.

Testing HSDPA RB Test Mode

Start troubleshooting by ensuring that HSDPA RB test mode can supply the highest throughput for your device category (e.g. 7.2 Mbps for an HSDPA category 8 device as described below). 1. Turn Operating Mode (Call Control [F1]) to Cell Off 2. Set RB Test First HS-PDSCH Code = 5 (Call Control (2 of 5) >> Generator Info [F3] >> Downlink Channel Codes [F2] >>HSDPA/HSUPA DL Chan Codes [F4]) 3. Return Operating Mode (Call Control [F1]) to Active Cell 4. Set Channel Type = 12.2k RMC + HSDPA Call Parms (1 of 3) [F8] 5. Set RB Test HS-DSCH Configuration Type = User Defined (Call Parms (1 of 3) HSPA Parameters [F3] >> HSDPA Parameters [F10] >> HSDPA RB Test Mode Setup [F8]) 6. Set RB Test User Defined Active HS-PDSCHs = 10 a. Set RB Test User Def Transport Block Size Index= 48 b. Set RB Test User Defined Modulation Type = 16QAM c. Set RB Test User Defined Inter-TTI Interval = 1 d. Set RB Test User Defined HARQ Processes = 6 e. Set Uplink 64k DTCH HSDPA Loopback State = On 7. Set HSDPA Conn DL Channel Levels Call Control (2 of 5) >> Generator Info [F3] >> Connected DL Channel Levels [F4] >> HSDPA Conn DL Channel Levels [F4] a. HSDPA Cell 1 Connected CPICH = -13 b. HSDPA Cell 1 Connected P-CCPCH/SCH = -13 c. HSDPA Cell 1 Connected S-CCPCH = Off d. HSDPA Cell 1 Connected PICH = -15 e. HSDPA Cell 1 Connected DPCH = -15 f. HSDPA Cell 1 Connected HS-PDSCHs (Sum) = -1 g. HSDPA Cell 1 Connected HS-SCCH = -13 8. Set Cell Power = -75 dBm (this is the default) Call Parms [F7] 9. Connect device to 8960 via RF cable and power on device. See device attach to 8960 (status will move through attaching back to idle on 8960 active cell section of front panel) 10. Originate an RB test mode call from the 8960 Call Control [F3] 11. Look at HBLER measurement; make sure it reads steadily 7.2 Mbps, alter cell power, if needed. a. Press Measurement selection menu key (lower right side of display) b. Highlight HSDPA Block Error Ratio measurement and press Enter 12. End call. Call Control (1 of 5) [F3] 13. Save these settings in Register 1. Press Save key (upper right side of test set). Highlight Register 1 and press Enter.

Testing HSDPA PS Data

Once youve established that HSDPA RB test mode is working as expected, the next step is to test throughput on a packet-switched data connection. 1. Set proper GPRS Radio Access Bearer for your device Call Control (3 of 5) Data Channels [F4] >> Packet Data Setup [F1] >> GPRS Radio Access Bearer = 384k UL/HSDPA DL PS 2. Set CQI Value = 25 and PS Data HS-DSCH MAC-d PDU Size = 656 Bits Call Parms (1 of 3) HSPA Parameters [F10] >> HSDPA Parameters [F10] >> HSDPA PS Data Setup [F7] 3. Initiate PDP Context between 8960 and device via Dial Up Connection or data card connection software 4. Set up Data Throughput Monitor a. Turn on IP traces Trace Control [F2] >> Trace Display [F1] >> Set IP Tx and IP Rx traces to On b. Set up axes, Axis Control [F1] i.Set Stop Data Rate = 7400 kbps ii.Set Time Span = 100 seconds 5. Initiate a UDP Flood from server at 7.2 Mbps. Note: there are many different publicly available tools to generate UDP data floods. During a UDP flood, the OTA Rx rate should show steadily 7.2 Mbps. Stop UDP Flood. 6. Start Filezilla Server on Server PC. Ensure Miscellaneous settings (Click edit >> settings} are a. Transfer buffer = 1460 b. Socket buffer = 200020 c. Toggle server offline then online if changed. 7. Check TcpWindowSize = 200020 on Client PC (Click Start >> Run >> Open regedit >> OK >> Edit >> Find >> TcpWindowSize >> Find Next). 8. Open Filezilla Client on Client PC. Connect to Server PC. Address: 10.10.10.20, User: anonymous >> Press Enter 9. FTP a file from the Server PC by dragging a file from the remote site to the local site of the Filezilla Client application and observe data throughput monitor. You should see a fairly flat OTA Rx trace and IP Rx trace with some variations. 10. End call or disconnect from device connection software. 11. Save these settings in Register 2.

Testing HSUPA RB Test Mode

Now that HSDPA RB test mode and PS data connections are working smoothly, its time to add HSUPA. 1. Set Channel Type = 12.2k RMC + HSPA (for E-DCH category 5 or HSPA for category 6) Call Parms [F8] 2. Set up the power levels in the downlink Call Control (2 of 5) Generator Info [F3] >> Connected DL Channel Levels [F4 ]>> HSPA Conn DL Channel Levels [F5] >> Set the following: a. HSPA Cell 1 Connected CPICH = -13 b. HSPA Cell 1 Connected P-CCPCH/SCH = -14 c. HSPA Cell 1 Connected S-CCPCH = Off d. HSPA Cell 1 Connected PICH = -20 e. HSPA Cell 1 Connected DPCH = -15 f. HSPA Cell 1 Connected E-AGCH = -20 g. HSPA Cell 1 Connected E-HICH = -20 h. HSPA Cell 1 Connected E-RGCH = -20 i. HSPA Cell 1 Connected HS-PDSCHs = -1 j. HSPA Cell 1 Connected HS-SCCH 1 = -13 3. Set up HSPA RB test mode. a. Call Parms (1 of 3) HSPA Parameters [F10] >> HSDPA Parameters [F10] >> HSDPA RB Test Mode Setup [F8] i. RB Test HS-DSCH Configuration Type = FRC ii. FRC Type = H-Set 1 QPSK b. Call Parms (1 of 3) HSPA Parameters [F10] >> HSUPA Parameters [F9] >> HSUPA RB Test Mode Setup [F8] i. E-DCH TTI = 10 ms (for E-DCH category 5 or 2 ms for category 6) ii. E-DCH RLC SDU Size = 11744 (for E-DCH category 5 or 29360 for category 6) iii. RB Test Mode E-DPDCH Maximum Channel Codes = 2SF2 (for E-DCH category 5 or 2SF2+2SF4 for category 6) iv. RB Test Mode E-RGCH Information State = On 4. Originate an RB test mode call from the 8960 Call Control [F3] 5. Look at HSUPA and HSDPA Information on Call Setup screen to see throughput. (Press Measurement Reset button to restart counters). 6. Check HSUPA details under HSUPA Information. Call Control (2 of 5) Additional Screens [F1] >> HSUPA Information [F2] 7. End call or disconnect from device connection software. 8. Save these settings in Register 3.

Testing HSUPA PS Data

The final step now is to make an HSUPA PS data connection and confirm its throughput performance. 1. Set up the data channel configuration Call Control (3 of 5) Data Channels [F4] >> Packet Data Setup [F1] >> GPRS Radio Access Bearer = HSUPA UL/HSDPA DL PS 2. Save these settings in Register 4. 3. Initiate PDP Context as before. 4. UDP Flood at 2 Mbps (for E-DCH category 5 or 5.7 Mbps for category 6) from Client to Server and observe the results on the Data Throughput Monitor. You should see a solid 2 Mbps (or 5.7 Mbps) UL OTA. Stop UDP Flood. 5. Ensure Filezilla Server application is still running on the Server PC. 6. Ensure Filezilla Client application is still running on the Client PC. 7. FTP a file from the Client PC by dragging a file from the local site to the remote site of the Filezilla Client application and observe data throughput monitor. You should see a fairly flat OTA Rx trace and IP Rx trace with some variations. 8. End call or disconnect from device connection software.

Simultaneous HSDPA and HSUPA transmission

Now that the maximum data is flowing through the device and test set system, you can experiment with simultaneous uplink and downlink transmissions. 1. Perform UDP Flood at 7.2 Mbps to the Client and at the same time a UDP Flood at 2 Mbps (for E-DCH category 5 or 5.7 Mbps for category 6) to the Server and observe the results. UDP Flood typically provides downlink/uplink rates fairly close to the maximum capability that the device can support since the flood of data is unacknowledged. 2. You can now perform and a bidirectional FTP from Client to Server (simulates the uplink) and from Server to Client (simulates the downlink). Be sure to select different files to FTP for each direction. 3. Observe the results on the Data Throughput Monitor and see that HSDPA performance is typically reduced when HSUPA is added. The UE is juggling its resources between the two services (download and upload). 4. Stop the FTP in either direction to look at either the uplink or downlink in greater detail.
