BOKARO STEEL CITY

ASSIGNMENT FOR THE SESSION 2013-2014
Class: XII Subject : English
Reading 1. Read the following passage carefully: Environmental and social issues are driving new concern for acting responsibly in our leisure time. In the age of responsible travel it is appropriate and timely to conserve natural resources and preserve life styles of the indigenous population. Ecotourism is predicted on these principles. The importance of the traveller in the eco-tourism industry cannot be underestimated. Just follow few things that will help you to become a more responsible traveller. Your sense of responsibility enhances your enjoyment and aids in the protection of the host place's natural and cultural environment. You should always educate yourself about your destination, prior to departure. Collect more and more information about the place, for this is considered as an extremely important eco-tourism practice. Learning about the history, culture and language and natural environment of your destination area aids both cultural interaction and appreciation of local ecosystems. People are more likely to socialise if you show a prior knowledge of their place, culture and home. Prior knowledge of local ecosystem means you are more alert to different animals and plants. Information is available from local libraries, tourism organisations, and visitor centres on arrival. The manner in which you conduct yourself on vacation determines the impact you personally will make on your chosen destination area. Essentially you can make a significant difference through maximising your positive impact and minimising your negative impact on the host's natural and cultural environment. It is important to remember that travellers are guests in the host destination. Another important aspect of ecotourism is to know the myth of that locality. Travellers can help to conserve the environment by making sure that their economic impact directly benefits the local population. Ensure that the money you spend goes to the local inhabitants means that they will want to conserve the natural environment that has attracted you to that destination. And finally, always remember you are just a part of their system and you have no right to disturb their environment, disturb the animals, the locals and as an eco tourist, you should always respect their people, their culture, their gods and their beliefs. Be a student of nature and the unending expanse around you, will make you realise the transitoriness of mortal existence. 1.1.
