2009-03-31 Function Transformation, Part IV

This document is an algebra lesson on horizontal stretching and shrinking of functions. It explains that previously students learned how to shift and reflect graphs, and yesterday they learned vertical stretching. Today they will learn how to horizontally stretch and shrink graphs. It provides examples of stretching the function y=x by a factor of 2 and shrinking it by a factor of 0.5. Students are asked to graph these examples on their calculators and note the differences. Several more examples of horizontally stretching and shrinking various base functions are given.

Function Transformations IV: Horizontal Stretching

So far we’ve learned how to shift a base graph left/right/up/down, and we also know how
to reflect (flip) the base graphs across the x and y axes. Yesterday we learned how to
stretch functions vertically.

Today we’re going to learn how to st r e t c h (and shrink) functions horizontally.
