Wolf Friday 10/3/08 Unit 1: Functions and Their Graphs Inverses & Transformations
Materials and Resources: Warm-up (1 per student) Goals: Functions/Graphs sheet (1 per student) Classroom set of laptops Inverses & Transformations Geometers Sketchpad Activity sheet (1 per student) Weekly Self-Assessment (1 per student) PA Standards Addressed: 2.8.11 K. Select, justify and apply an appropriate technique to graph a linear function in two variables, including slope-intercept, x- and y-intercepts, graphing by transformations and the use of a graphing calculator. 2.8.11 P. Analyze a relation to determine whether a direct or inverse variation exists and represent it algebraically and graphically. Instructional Objectives: Students will be able to apply their knowledge of shifts and transformations, composition of functions, and inverse functions to complete an activity using Geometers Sketchpad. Time 10 min 1 min 5 min 10 min 20 min Activity Warm-up Agenda Homework Check Homework Review Goals: Functions/Graphs Description Pass out the warm-up and instruct students to complete. Review the goals for the day. Instruct students to copy Pg. 100 #46a. Collect. Present the solutions to the HW and answer any questions. Modeling: Pass out the sheet with the goals students will need to know for the upcoming tests. Guiding: Present example problems for any of the topics with which students have questions. Independent Practice: Students have been completing activities incorporating all of the goals on the sheets. Assessment: Students have been assessed on the activities that they have completed. Modifications: Students with special needs will be provided examples of topics with which they have encountered difficulty. Advanced students will be shown challenging

problems in the textbook to apply their knowledge. Modeling: Review solutions to the warm-up activity. Guiding: Show the students how a graph can be reflected over the line y = x using a piece of string and a cut out graph. Independent Practice: Inverses & Transformations Geometers Sketchpad Activity Assessment: Completed activities will be collected and graded. Modeling: On the SmartBoard present an example problem to model what students will be completing. Guiding: Pass out the laptops and help students log on and answer any questions as students begin the first task. Independent Practice: Students will complete the sheet. Assessment: Review solutions as a class and draw the graphs on the SmartBoard. Modifications: Students with special needs will be given textbooks to supplement their notes as they complete the activity. Advanced students will be instructed to justify their answers and provide reasons for why they are correct. Revisit goals and identify whether they were met. Pass out the Weekly Self-Assessments and collect at the bell.

Warm-up
Recall that the graph of the inverse function f 1 ( x ) is a reflection of the graph of the function f ( x) over the line y = x. Apply this information to match the graphs of the functions in Column A with the corresponding graphs of their inverses in Column B. *Challenge Determine whether the inverse is a function. Column A: Column B:

Goals: Functions
You should be able to analyze a function f(x) to answer the following questions: 1) Determine whether or not f(x) represents a function 2) Define the domain of the function 3) Evaluate f(c) 4) Evaluate f(x + c) 5) Find all values of x such that f(x) = c 6) Find the zeroes f(x) 7) Solve f(x) = g(x) to find points of intersection 8) Find the average rate of change of f(x) from x1 = c1 to x 2 = c 2 9) Determine if f(x)is even or odd 10) Combine functions using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division 11) Find the composition of two functions f ( g ( x )) 12) Find and verify the inverse of a function algebraically
