09 Inverting Schmitt Trigger

This document describes an experiment that demonstrates the operation of an inverting Schmitt trigger. The experiment shows the relationship between the input and output voltages and how adjusting potentiometers P2 and P3 changes the switching thresholds. P3 controls the hysteresis and P2 controls the reference voltage. An inverting Schmitt trigger can be useful in applications that require noise immunity where a signal must pass a high and low threshold.

Inverting Schmitt trigger

This experiment shows the relationship between the input and output voltages of an inverting Schmitt trigger. The operation of a comparator is demonstrated practically and confirmed experimentally.

Circuit

Procedure
1. Connect an Experimenter to the UniTr@in-I Interface and insert the experiment card SO4203-7X Comparators. Connect experiment field II of the experiment card with the UniTr@in-I Interface as

3. Turn potentiometer P3 all the way to the right. Carefully reduce the input voltage from the DC source until the output voltage just turns positive. Result 1 4. Measure the input voltage with Voltmeter A and enter the result in the corresponding field. 5. Carefully increase the input voltage via the DC source until the output voltage just turns negative. Result 2 6. Measure the input voltage with Voltmeter A and enter the result in the corresponding field. 7. Interpret results 1 and 2. 9. Change the switching hysteresis with P3 and observe the oscilloscope display. Using P3, set the hysteresis so that the upper switching threshold of the Schmitt trigger is roughly +6V. 10. Using the oscilloscope, measure the output voltage V as a function of the input voltage V and transfer the oscillogram A E to the adjacent field. Also, enter the oscilloscope settings in the corresponding fields.
