Paradise lagoon launches first houseboat in back water of

coastal karnataka. Coastal Karnataka will now be on the world

The houseboat is approximately 67 feet long 13 feet wide.

Mr. I.M. Vittala, Principal secretary of tourism, Information,

kannada and culture, govt of karnataka. Dr. C. somasekhara IAS,

Director Department of tourism and Mrs. P. Hemalatha District

commissioner of udupi. It was hosted by Mr. N.D. Tiwari, MD,

Jungle lodges and Resorts and Mr. Y.R. Monohar, Md. Paradise

club and resorts.

The study is confined to back water tourism destinations.

The study is undertaken mainly for assessing the potentially of

bhadra backwater tourism in BRP and also to highlight the

hidden tourism spots keping in view the existing trend of

adventure tourism in BRP.

This study is conducted in all most all the place of Bhadra

back water tourism which posses natural, adventure, trekking,

water sports activity and other types of tourism.

1.5. Research Methodology

Research means thee systematic approach concerning

generalization and the formulation of a theory is re search as

such the term research refers to the systematic method

consisting of enunciating the problem, formulating a

hypnothesis, collecting his facts or data analyzing the facts and

reaching certain conclusion either in the form of solutions toward

the concerned problems.

research problem. It has, it may be understood as a science of

studying how research is done scientifically.

1.6. Statement of research problem

Each destination in the country or state has its own geo

socio cultural identity. Therefore it demands specific tourism

development plans and actions within the umbrella of an overall

tourism perspective for the country.

Back water in BRP is an unexplored destination with

cultural, natural and manmade tourism attraction and it is

undisturbed by man. This itself indicates that excavating things

unknown or hidden has always a great import ant. Being a

resident of back water tourism in BRP a research project related

to the bhaclra river centre as an obvious choise.

There are number of other consideration also while

selecting the present problem for research. Besides the time of

cost consideration, familiarity with region, language advantage

and mainly feeling of doing some thing for the resident.

As regards thematic frame work of research topic i.e. back

water tourism, a case study at BRP was taken up.

Methodology

The data used in the study has largely been of primary

nature. This primary data has been a obtained through

questionnaires with the help of sampling technique. The

secondary data has been o0btained from interned, broachers,

book and publication on the subject of hospitality industry.

Questionnaire:

2 set of questionnaire (One each for tourist and workers)

are prepared so as to get comprehensive information about

profile of tourism purpose of visit, preferences regarding

facilities, activities, attraction, teiv satisfaction levels etc. Most

of the questions are yes or no questions. some open ended

questions are also included.

Sampling:

Around 30 question natives were distributed randomly

among the visitors and localities to know their opinion about

tourism potential of back water in BRP.

Analysis and interpretation of data:

Keeping in view the objectives of the study, the data

collected through questionnaires is andlyzed and interpreted with

the help of statistical tabulations methods using average and

percentage approach where ever needed, though analysis and

interpretation of data are done by manually, computer facilities

are also used to translator relevant empirical information in to

illustrations in the form of diagrams.

1.7 Limitations of the study

Obviously all studies and researcher have their own

limitation. Need not to say, the researcher while working on this

project had many limitations. To mentions the major ones are as

under.

 Due to lack literature on back water tourism in BRP

primary information has been collected by field visits.

 The size of the sample has been yet another timitation,

because many of the respondents were not accept to fill up

the questionnaire.

 Duration of the study was limited and up to data details

about destinations were not available.

2.1 Introduction:

India's vast geographical diversity provides a wealth of

outdoors adventure. all tastes are catered for from the gentlest

to the fast placed and there is something for every level or

1. Water Skiing:

Water skiing is a sport / game and recreational activity and

is popular in many countries around the world where appropriate

conditions exist an expanse of water unaffected by wave motion,

rivers, lakes, and sheltered bays are all popular for water skiing.

usually constructed out of fiberglass based composites. They are

8. Kasaragod Tourism

3.3 Kerala Houseboats

The houseboats in Kerala, south India, are huge, slow

times, were used to carry rich and spices from kuttanad to the

This is at a distance of 28 kms from Shimoga. Bhadra dam

is constructed across river Bhadra, The height of dam is

194.There is an electricity generating station adolescents to dam.

The Bhadra wildlife sanctuary boasts of rich avian life with

birds like the grey jungle fowl, Red sprfolowl, painted bush quail,

Emerald dove, southern green imperial pigeon, great black wood

packer, Malabar parakeet and hill myna just to name a few.

While among the reptiles the marish crocodiles are usually

found in the upstream stretches or the Bhadra River and monitor

lizards are also a common sight. The common offer and the

4.3 River Tern Lodge

Situated in the midst of the western Ghats of chikmagalur

district in Karnataka, surrounded by the lofty hill. Ranges of

Babudangiri. The river tern lodge is a perfect blend of nature and

wildlife.

The lodge gets its name from the congregation of

thousands of river terms during their breeding on a nearby

island. Indeed a spectacular sight to behold!.

You can get mesmerized by observing their preening

feeding, cackling and many interesting antics. It is located on a

hillock, at the edge of the picturesque Bhadra river, near

Lakkavalli adjoining the northern boundaries of the Bhadra Tiger

reserve and wildlife sanctuary. Soft waves of backwaters of the

river lash the edge periodically harmonizing the sounds of

nature, to put you in a perfect state of bliss. The river tern lodge

is the ideal spot to get acquainted with nature in its serene

beauty.

Activities

Apart from wildlife viewing through exciting jeep prides

into the Bhadra tiger reserve wildlife sanctuary, which is about 4

km from the resort, there are water based adventures such as

sailing, kayaking, water cycle, water trapaline, joy fishing on

offer.

A boat ride on the backwaters of the Bhadra reservoir can

also yield great wildlife viewing opportunities. Other activities

include guided trekking, island camping, bird watching, mountain

of the sunset over the backwater. To appreciate nature, it is

consciously decided not to have TVs in the rooms.

Apart from the comfortable accommodation, the gal Ghar

which is a circular, open- to – sides gazebo is the guests dining

area, providing an extraordinary close to nature experience.

The resort also features wildlife documentaries in the

evenings, for those interested. All water activity equipments and

instructors are present at the Lodge and adhere to high safety

guidelines.

Season

The climate is generally pleasant all through the year, while

the bulk of the rainfall occurs during the southwest monsoon,

between June and September, leaving the entire sanctuary lush

green. Summer months of March, April and May would be slightly

warm.

Cuisine

A delicious spread of south and North Indian dishes,

Getting There

From Bangalore:

Drive towards Tumkur, Take the Shimoga bye- pass road at

Tumkur [Instead of goings to Tumkur town] and cross Gubbi,

take the left that also has a Kuvempu University direction board.

Travel 14 km till you reach Lakkavalli, at Lakkavalli you will

find a sign board to the river tern lodge which is about 4 km

away. Alternately you can contact the Range forest office at

Lakkavalli for enquiries. The river tern lodge is 38 km form

shimoga and is located by the Bhadra reservoir.

 The survey was conducted in back water tourism

destination an Bhadra river back water. The respondent were the

tourist of this area. The respondent were selected through

random sampling. All the respondent were personally contacted

by the researcher so as to ensure reliability of the data. As such

the sample size has been 33 but the responses on certain

aspects exceeds the number of respondents because of multiple

choice.

Therefore researcher have created more options while

doing tabulation since most of the information obtained through

the questionnaires is in numerical terms and self explanatory as

well.

All the respondents had different opinions about what they

like in back water tourism in BRP, satisfaction levels with

facilities, their travel arrangements, place they want to go, about

problem they have faced in back water for the examples food,

guide service and communication problems, and what type of

activities are interest and more enjoyed, and in back water other

adventure sports activities can be conducted opinion, and tourist

come again other tourist opinions collecting the questionnaire

time.

Findings and suggestions

6.1 Findings:

Back water tourism in BRP is a well know destination in

Shimoga district Karnataka state. The shimoga is famous for

Bhadra back water tourism development in BRP is very

slow. Certain problems which hinders the pace of growth of

tourism in BRP, those are mentioned below:

BRP back water is potential tourist destination which is

accepted by all tourist respondents, who were considered as a

sample for the research but in case of existing facilities available

at BRP tourism destinations most of the respondents are partly

satisfied. The level of satisfaction is important for a tourist as it

enriches the experience, which in turn also serves as a

continuing source of recreation for them. But in context of BRP

the basic facilities like food and accommodation, transportation,

guide services etc. Are inadequate to satisfy the basic needs of

the tourist.

As reveled in the earlier chapter it is indicated of the

tourist visit BRP back water for pleasure trip. But unfortunately

effective supply fr the kind of recreation and entertainment

activities that are greater in demand among the pleasure seekers

is not up to their expectations.

Information and publicity system is yet another area which

is short supply. Most of the respondents visit back water in BRP

by guidance friend and website non of the respondent visited

back water tourism in BRP on the basis of information received

from tourism offices, travel agent advertisements and to unit

broachers.

The broachers, folders, advertisement and other publicity

material mentally prepare the customers about the realities of

the destination. Unfortunately we don't see such material about

back water tourism in BRP and these are remains conspicuous by

its absence.

Scenic or natural beauty is god gify to any tourist

destination. Analysis of questionnaires reveals the fact that

majority of the respondents like scenic beauty in back water in

BRP, unfortunately these beauty is gradually disappearing due to

the improper maintenance and lack of awareness in the local

people.

Accommodation is one of the basic requirements of the

tourist. But in BRP back water only one river tern lodge there,

and this lodge booking the online method, seem to be a major

short coming for tourism development in back water in BRP.

Guide service is yet another major deficiency.

It is indicated that majority of the tourist propose to visit

leisure, entertainment, and water adventure activities. But these

are the places, which aren't were connected by transportation.

And also researcher found that these are facing lack of hotel and

accommodations guide service. Back water in BRP even we don't

see any hotel and also if tourist prefer public transport he has to

walk nearly 11/2 km to reach back water.

Development program by government is another area

which seeks suggestion. Many localities expressed government

did not take any developmental measures for promotion of

tourism in BRP. without government intervention it is not possible

to promote BRP back water as a popular tourist destination.

Transportation is another factor on which the success of

tourism industry largely depends upon. A good transportation

service gives a faster growth rate in tourism. what is required is

efficient, cheap comfortable and transport facility. In BRP the

road transport is not that much developed to link different tourist

destinations. Even the condition of road are good they are

lacking regular maintenance. Certain destination are ignored and

remain neglected by tourist because of lack of proper transport

mode.

6.2 Suggestions

The above existing short comings generally felt by the

majority of tourist. If we remove these draw backs, would

enhance the overall tourism potential of back water. Here a few

suggestion which need to be implemented in this regard.

 Recreation and entertainment facilities at the destination

directly enhance the satisfaction levels of tourist. Moreover

the are also vital for mental and physical health of the host

population. Therefore there is an urgent need to plan

recreation and entertainment amenities at different

destination according to its average personality.

 This study indicates poor services in transportation

facilities. Therefore the problem of transportation needs to

be attended immediately. The only remedy for

transportional problem is encouraging private investment

for providing better tourist carriages and government

should take immediate steps to maintain the roads and

other facilities.

 Shopping, local art craft, fairs and festivals local cuisines

and falk traditions, which constitute on integral part of
