____________________________________________
Dont lie, youve done it; whether it was by flipping your camera phone to take a photo, taking a photo of your reflection in the mirror or used reverse camera tool that is oh-so conveniently available on some phones. Weve all taken a selfie. Weve all woken up and opened up Facebook or Twitter or Instagram t to see a fresh batch of self portraits. It has become one of the most famous photography trends of all time because it doesnt matter if youre a model or not - if youve got a camera, youre set. This trend seems to be a factor towards creating the self-obsessed, over-sharing, competitive and most importantly, insecure generation that exists today. So are selfies narcissistic, empowering, or just a fun time-passer? I would say it is all those things. Of course it seems to be harmless and often a result of boredom, which is my excuse, and often isnt doing anyone harm. But due to the massive increase in media exposure, its bound to have some drawbacks. Many would say that selfies are a result of insecurity where people objectify themselves. Boys tend to take photographs of their muscles and girls tend to take photographs in which they stand in a way to minimize their stomach and enhance their breasts and butt. People get into unnatural positions and make uncomfortable facial expressions that they feel make them look better, then edit out any flaws, slap on a filter then send it out to the social media-sphere where people click the like and heart buttons to show they approve. This shows that many people in our generation are becoming less accepting of themselves and more into changing themselves to abide by others expectations. But what happens when there is no like? When there is no confidence boosting comments from people they barely know telling them how hot they look? The persons self confidence is drained; they delete their post and try again. Of course, these people deny these allegations of needing to impress others and insist that its just something for themselves but if that really was true, would putting them up on the internet where it will stay forever be necessary? The answer is no. Its not necessarily the fact that the photographs are being taken, but the fact that people are comfortable sharing slightly explicit photographs with hundred of people from which, they are probably close with about 6. The development of Facebook definitely contributes to this moral decline. Sure, its a great way to connect with people but to share a heavily edited photo of yourself in an infants clothing to some guy youre not completely sure you know but accepted anyway to increase your friend count? And Facebook is the creepiest onlooker of them all. Once you upload a photo on Facebook, they own it. They can sell your images or license them to others who can sell them. Maybe if you delete your photo that might not happen? Nope, once its up there, its there forever. Oh yeah, and they wont pay you for it. If youre thinking that this wont happen to you, doesnt the mere possibility of this happening creep you out? Speaking of people who are able to view your online information, with the increase of social networking, employers are now researching into the applicant or employees online presence to see if this is the kind of person they want their company to be associated with. So before you upload a photo of you getting wasted, ask yourself some questions. Do I have a job and can my employer see what Im about to upload? Do I plan on ever getting a job and will this photo risk my chances? Is this really something I want to be a part of my personal brand? From my journey across the home page of Facebook all the way to the Instagram profiles, I have learned that not everyone does this. There are people who focus on the quality of the context than the actual self. Selfies can be used for artistic or comedic expression. People can share fashion and their photographic techniques. For celebrities, selfies can be normalizing. They can show that they arent all that glamorous. You can express different sides to your personality; to show that this one thing that someone may know about you is not all there is to you. To know thyself is to know thyselfie. Selfies can be a form of self-expression and just a way to communicate with friends and family but there can be a negative impact that includes people taking a part of a constant competition to see who takes the title of Americas Next Top Selfie. As Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend had recently tweeted, perhaps Generation Selfie needs to take a good hard look at itself in the mirror. Samiha Meem, Editor of PROANA

PROANA, Your article on John Gallianos release from the House of Dior was very interesting to read. I think that it was mainly a PR move because if you open a book on the history of the fashion industry, you can see that they have somewhat of a high tolerance for stuff. Coco Chanels affiliation with Nazis right down to Karl Lagerfeld hatred towards fat people. The rise of social media was a definite factor to it as well because so many people were writing negatively about Dior. Its crazy how much power people really have. - HALEY, 19, MONTREAL

Hi PROANA, Thanks for talking about your experience in Bangladesh. Ive recently travelled to India and it was pretty much the same thing. The ads for skin whitening creams were just so explicit that I left utterly confused. Its unbelievable how normal it is here to bleach skin as if it is exactly the same as bleaching clothing. I actually researched into whether these media message are evident in western culture as well and I dont know why I was as surprised as I was. Many brands like Guerlain and Chanel have beauty lines that focus on whitening skin. Guerlains products are available worldwide but Chanel specifically has this line in Asia because of its high demand in that particular area. We truly do have so much impact on foreign cultures, its insane. Not only are we poisoning ourselves, but were poisoning other countries to the point where it becomes a part of their culture. PS. I like how although being a variety magazine with loads of ads, the content of your articles are always educating their readers about the media and promoting knowledge. People should be educated on these topics so they can make informed decisions on what they feel is correct. - LILY, 18, VANCOUVER

Fall 2013

FINISHED SKIN

Skin with a natural looking glow has been a staple to for runways in the past few seasons. Artists spent twice as much time on the skin than the rest of the face. Blush and bronzers we barely used if at all.

LIPS

Some of the most prominent lip trends for this season are nudes, reds and petal-like stains.

16

EYES

With skin being natural, many shows did not have a lot of stuff going on around the eyes or on the lips. But for those who did, they either put the attention on the lips or the eyes. From bold eyeliners to full natural brows eyebrows to jewelled eyes to smoky punk eye shadow, this season was either about natural or statement eye make-up.

HAIR

Natural waves, retro curls, punk chops, sleek ponytails, crimped and center parted hair.

MEDIA EDUCATION
& WHY ITS IMPORTANT
Doves new beauty campaign, Real Beauty Sketches featured a bunch of mostly thin, Caucasian and fairly young women who described themselves to a male forensic artist and who then were described again by a complete stranger. The outcome of the two sketches were very different and the overall message they were trying to communicate was that we truly are more beautiful than we think. There were so many holes in this ad, which includes its lack of variety in women. The video focused particularly on this white woman who went onto say that looks are very important and that it affects every aspect of a womans life after comparing the two sketches. The self-described image wasnt particularly unnattractive but what I would say the average person looks like. So were we supposed to conclude that one woman looks better than the other? Are we supposed to suddenly be happy about our looks because we have the approval of others? I saw the absurdity in this right away but then I log onto Facebook to see so many girls saying how amazing Dove is for embracing real beauty. This is because they havent been educated about the media. and taught that information and knowledge are two different things. Everyday we are bombarded with information in which there are about 3000 commercial messages that are being placed into our neo-cortex whether we like it or not. We cant somehow create a force field in our mind to block them but what we can do is educate ourselves as to not be completely brainwashed. Media literacy challenges students to think critically and deconstruct the constructed nature of media representations. They can connect these representations to their life and analyze how it can influence them. To be media literate means to be able to identify the difference between information and knowledge. Information can be easily accessed whether it is by opening the newspaper and swallowing the words without questioning it or via second hand news. Knowledge is looking at an article or ad, questioning it and coming to an educated conclusion about it.. When encountering messages with, for example, stereotypical implications then they would be able to recognize it. There are a lot of stereotypes that are show in the media especially about countries outside of where the media was made. For example, Americans see Canadians as people who would leave their doors open at night and welcome strangers into their homes. If someone were to be media literate, they would be able to tell that the ways certain countries are portrayed are only the stereotypical representation of it. Media education in high school is especially important because this is the time when teens are about to have the ability to vote for our countries leaders so we need to know how politicians try to get our vote and how people choose who they want to vote for. People need to know how much thought goes into a politicians every move and how strong hand gestures in a speech are a tactic to gain your trust. People need to know what these people do to manipulate. They need to know the roles of politicians and examine their work to see if they are truly working for the publics needs and interests. Media education is crucial towards the development and promotion of democracy. It is very important to educate teens on the political system especially because they are the future of our government and just learning about the levels and wings of government and politics is not enough. You need to be educated about the media and their advertising techniques so you dont end up buying into their products solely because you believed their slogans - the slogans that told you that you would be sexy and worthy if you bought their product. We are an age of consumers and we will never stop needing things but we should know what were buying into. You dont have to be a jaded hipster and renounce everything with commercial implications but you do need to be educated on what youre choosing to consume. Then you can make good decisions, being fully aware of the risks and benefits of your decisions.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are one of the most celebrated female comedians of our time. Poehler plays Leslie Knope, a government employee and avid feminist, on NBCs Parks & Recreation. Fey played Liz Lemon, the head writer for a sketch comedy show on NBC based on the actual job she had as the head writer for Saturday Night Live, on NBCs 30 Rock. The shows center the female characters and the problems they face at work, many of which are due to their gender. Poehler and Fey are also seen as feminist icons and real life best friends who met while at Second City. Before we talk about their collaborative accomplishments, we must see them as individuals.

AMY +TINA

Tina Fey has been credited by so many women as their inspiration specifically in comedy. Stars like Mindy Kaling and Lena Dunham, who both have created and written their own TV show, cite Fey as one of their inspirations to move forward in their careers. Dunham had credited her in her Golden Globe acceptance speech. In her book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns), Mindy Kaling cites Fey as a key inspiration to her success. And why wouldnt she be?

There has been a lot of speculation over whether she is a true feminist because of the type of humour she uses to exposes the absurdity in sexual politics. Personally, I think that this speculation that enforces the fact that women have to act a certain way even when theyre fighting for women to be seen as equals. If people feel as though Fey isnt as much of a feminist, that she writes misogynistic jokes, that says that to even be a female feminist you need to abide by a set of rules.

Fey was the first female head writer for Saturday Night Live which broke many barriers in comedy since its known to be a male dominated profession. She created, wrote and starred in her own TV show about her job at SNL, 30 Rock, which aired its final season this year. She wrote a book, Bossypants, which provides insight into navigating gender politics, sexism in the workplace, her personal experiences and the classic Tina Fey manic humour. People wonder how hard it must have been for fey to create a place for her in a male-dominated industry but she would just tell you that to do so, you really need to not care about what people think. Fey has proven that responding to situations with humour as opposed to serious answers is a much effective way to get a point across.

Regardless, it is undeniable that she has accomplished a lot for the feminist movement. Feys humbleness to all her achievements is somewhat unique. She had given an acceptance speech for an award she won where she asked when America would stop counting womens achievements based on gender alone. But overall, she says that she feels obligated to stay in the business and try hard to get to a place where she can create opportunities for others. She may not have sat down in a womens studies class but shes observant and can identify whats fair and whats not. During her early years, Fey used to be in a sketch comedy troupe called the the Second City, which was where she met Poehler. While so many people cite Fey as inspiration, she cites Poehler as her inspiration and the reason she made in comedy.

28

But I think the first real change in womens body image came when JLo turned it butt-style. That was the first time that having a large-scale situation in the back was part of mainstream American beauty. Girls wanted butts now. Men were free to admit that they had always enjoyed them. And then, what felt like moments later, boomBeyonc brought the leg meat. A back porch and thick muscular legs were now widely admired. And from that day forward, women embraced their diversity and realized that all shapes and sizes are beautiful. Ah ha ha. No. Im totally messing with you. All Beyonce and JLo have done is add to the laundry list of attributes women must have to qualify as beautiful. Now every girl is expected to have Caucasian blue eyes, full Spanish lips, a classic button nose, hairless Asian skin with a California tan, a Jamaican dance hall ass, long Swedish legs, small Japanese feet, the abs of a lesbian gym owner, the hips of a nine-year-old boy, the arms of Michelle Obama, and doll tits. The person closest to actually achieving this look is Kim Kardashian, who, as we know, was made by Russian scientists to sabotage our athletes.

Poehler is much more actively involved in the feminist movement and identifies as a feminist herself. She graduated the Boston College, went on to being a part of The Second City with Tina Fey, being on a Comedy Central show and then having her breakthrough with Saturday Night Live. She has a web series called Smart Girls at the Party where she interviews young girls who are making the world more awesome by being themselves. She plays Leslie Knope, a government employee/feminist, on NBCs Parks and Recreation and it has been said that Poehler brings a lot of herself into the character. Nick Offerman who is also on the show describe her as being both the head cheerleader and the quarterback at the same time. The reason why their friendship is a great model for healthy friendships is because they do not constantly compete with each other. In her memoir, Fey had mentioned that she got a job solely because Poehler wasnt available. When they hosted this years Golden Globes, they joked about how they were each others nemesis because they were both nominated in the same category. They are essentially each others head cheerleader rather than tripping each other during their cheer. More women should be supportive of one another. Yes, you may be working in a male-dominating environment, but it isnt each other you should be competing with to get up to the men. That is just proving that to get to men we need to hold a competition to see which woman is better. More women should support one another so we can break the barriers society has put in between us and gender equality. If youre a female who thinks we dont need feminism because sexism isnt even a problem any more since women are now able to work, youre just not looking hard enough. They know, understand and communicate with one another on an entirely different level. They are known to be genuinely nice to everyone on and off screen

unlike many celebrities who put on the nice act but are completely obnoxious. They will answer your questions nicely because they understand that they have become a symbol for feminism in the entertainment industry and a huge inspiration to many. In a non-obnoxious way, of course. Fey has two daughters and Poehler has two sons. They both balance work and family but they admit that its tough. Sometimes I just hand them a juicy red apple Ive poisoned in my working-mother witch cauldron and fly away, jokes Fey. Poehler says, My least favorite part is when women ask me how I do it In my case, Im a lot luckier than some people who have to work two jobs and, you know, I sometimes get to bring my kid to work and all that stuff. But this woman was like, Oh, my God, your hours! You just work so hard! How do you do it? And I realized that, How do you do it? really means How could you do it? Theres an unwritten rule that women who stay at home are supposed to pretend its boring, and women who work are supposed to pretend they feel guilty, and thats how it works. But they are growing older and it usually becomes harder to actresses to have leading roles because apparently women grow less attractive with age whereas men grow more attractive. Tina fey has some great advice. As you age, you might want to pay someone to shoot lasers at your face. You can actually simulate the experience at home by having a friend hide your wallet while you sit close to a space heater. It works just as well. I think we have can count on these ladies to be here for a long time. If not, Fey can put her DIY plastic surgery to action and knowing how close they are, shell let Poehler in on it as well. Even if they do end up leaving show business, it is great to know that theyd be leaving it in much shape than it was when found.

Amy was in the middle of some ... nonsense ... and she did something vulgar as a joke. I cant remember what it was exactly, except it was dirty and loud and unladylike. Jimmy Fallon, who was arguably the star of the show at the time, turned to her and in a faux-squeamish voice said, Stop that! Its not cute! I dont like it. Amy dropped what she was doing, went black in the eyes for a second and wheeled around on him. I dont f***ing care if you like it. Jimmy was visibly startled. Amy went right back to enjoying her ridiculous bit. (I should make it clear that Jimmy and Amy are very good friends and there was never any real beef between them. Insert penis joke here.) With that exchange, a cosmic shift took place. Amy made it clear that she wasnt there to be cute. She wasnt there to play wives and girlfriends in the boys scenes. She was there to do what she wanted to do and she did not f***ing care if you like it. I was so happy. Weirdly, I remember thinking, My friend is here! My friend is here! Even though things had been going great for me at the show, with Amy there, I felt less alone.

Album Review

VAMPIRE WEEKEND
MODERN VAMPIRES OF THE CITY
Artist: Vampire Weekend Album: Modern Vampires of the City Genre: Indie Rock Label: XL Recordings Rating: 4 stars
After providing their fans with an album stream on iTunes a week before its release, Vampire Weekend put out their third studio album Modern Vampires of the City on May 14th.

Its members, Ezra Koenig, Rostam Batmanglij, Chris Tomson & Chris Baio, are known to be a very well-educated and financially privileged group of people that met during their years at Columbia University. Koenig majored in English Literature (which led to him being an 8th grade English teacher while working on their debut album), Batmanglij in Music, Tomson in Music and Economics and Baio in Russian Regional Studies and Math. Koenig and Tomson bonded over their common interest in punk rock and African music and by senior year, they were Vampire Weekend. Their privileged college life has greatly influenced the lyrical content of their songs, singing about the leading them to be widely known in the college community. However, with Modern Vampires of the City, they truly have evolved. Although traces of the privileged college student life are still recognizable, they have matured musically and lyrically. Theyre slowly moving away from their original African-influenced indie pop sound with hints of baroque. Koenig has described their first three albums to be somewhat of a trilogy and hes absolutely correct. The kids in college have graduated and now see the world out of the confined spaces of school. They are out in the real world faces problems that they did not imagine they would have stumbled upon.

The first track Obvious Bicycle introduces the evolution of these college kids right off the bat. With lyrics like you ought to spare your face the razor / because no one is going to spare the time for you / you ought to spare the world your labour / its been twenty years and no ones told the truth, it communicates the struggle for success. The kids in college were promised that if they studied hard, they would be successful but now that theyre out in the real world, theyre slowly realizing that it was a lie. They feel defeated because the dreams they had were crushed and it seems like theres no point in trying anymore. Of course, the explicit discouragement in that lyric is only voicing the thoughts of a twenty-something year old whose life in the city is not going as planned. Especially because this album is really about the bands home city, New York (album cover shows a fog-filled New York City and their press photos are of them on top of rooftops with the NYC cityscape behind them), this message is very applicable. Many people move to New York City to start their life and they all struggle because there are just all these other people who have the same goal. Its brilliant because the college audience they had during their first two albums have probably graduated by now and feel a much stronger connec connection to this song than the rest of us because theyre going through these emotions

as well. This track definitely sets the foundation for the musical and lyrical content of the rest of the album and is probably my favourite track on this record. Koenig has done a fantastic job of riddling in references to various things in the song Step. This, I would say, is another track which seems to about early adults but this time more about their lack of commitment in romantic relationships because their too high on their own crap to truly acknowledge their partner. Koenig seems to be speaking with his former, more immature self in this song. The first verse alludes to the time when he was finishing college. Hes saying how he used to front meaning put on an act of being cool when he was in New York enjoying life with champagne and disco tapes. The girl he was with was probably very invested in their relationship and he was just this obnoxious kid who only paid attention to his music. He then goes on to say that he has changed from being that person who was too self-involved to care. The chorus is simply him pleading to the girl saying that his wisdom teeth are out, meaning hes grown and ditched his old mentality. Hes ready for the house, meaning that hes ready for a real commitment and how he cant do it alone. The next verse starts off by talking about how at the beginning of his relationship when he was fresh

in love his family had disapproved of his relations with this girl and recommended other women who were smarter, richer and a better a fit by their judgment. Then it also talks about how even people out on the street gave them judgmental looks like they werent good for each other. This verse had reversed back in time to reflect on the fruition of their relationship and his devotion to this girl everyone seemed to dislike. Fast forward in time, he is now a much older man. He is reflecting back to their relationship, wishing that he could just go back in time and be young again so he can try to make things right so the girl knows how much he truly cared for her. The last line refers back to how people disapproved of their relationship and how they were the only ones that were able to see the goodness in their love when it seemed to be hiding from everyone else. Hes coming to terms with the fact that maybe its too late to resurrect their love and that she doesnt need him to have the life she wants but if there is a chance he would go for it right away no matter how much time has passed. This is he would want to stay with her forever and grow old with her. But who knows? Maybe this isnt an actual girl hes talking about. Koenig is extremely successful in making his layered lyrics send off the message he wishes to deliver in a general sense so the audience can

33

interpret them in a way that connects to them the best. Diane Young is word play on the phrase dying young and about an irresponsible over-privileged kid. This kid torches a Saab as if theyre a pile of leaves and uses his reputation to get out of the crazy things he does. It challenges this kid by asking him if he really thinks he can go all the way to the end or will he back out when things get real and how he should cut his financial support from his family and try to do something by himself for once. The dying young phrase is probably connected to the Kennedy reference that appears later on in the song. It starts off by saying how this kid is Irish and proud meaning he thinks hes lucky but his luck is of a Kennedy. Many members of the

Kennedy family have died pretty early in their lives so its saying how if they dont smarten up, theyll just end up like that. Unbelievers takes on the topic of religion. Dont Lie is loss of time and death. Hannah Hunt is about time and money. Everlasting Arms, Finger Back, Worship You & Ya Hey are about the existence of God and atheism. Hudson is about repetition of history. Young Lion gives the final message of hope, ending the album on a much more positive note, telling us that everything doesnt need to be figured out right this second and how we should take our time. Modern Vampires of the City still has that classic Vampire Weekend cleverness to it while elucidating much stronger topics. Its definitely something worth listening to.

HOROSCOPES
Aries (March 21 to April 20) If you are happy with your current job, you should keep it! If you feel restless and you are not very happy with your job or your employment conditions now is a good time to look for a new challenge and spread your wings. Just make sure you are making the right decision. Some close friends of yours might be going on a long trip and you feel a bit envious. Dont worry too much about it or let it get to you as your opportunity will be along shortly. New discoveries and new experiences perhaps in the form of a diving or vacation close to the sea will be coming your way. You will more likely be traveling with friends and family. A vacation with new experience will help you to deal with some personal problems and make you feel really positive about your life and the future. Cancer (June 22 - July 22) You are going to win a struggle June 2013. This will boost your independence and give you more personal and emotional freedom. You will learn you dont need to follow the crowd and the ideas you create within yourself work just fine. Stand proud Cancer - you are great. Most Cancerians are not thought of as business people but opportunities coming your way this month do deserve a second look. There are some new aspects on the horizon which can lead to a change in life style and you should seize them with both hands. Your health is good at the moment so make the most of this period of activity and take advantage of the energy flowing your way. June 2013 will be the month you realize good health comes from good energy

Taurus (April 21 to May 21) June 2013 will seem to be a bit confusing for you. Things in your personal life move on really quickly and just as soon as you have got used to one new idea up pops another one. Stay fluid during June 2013 and dont be afraid to embrace change. There will be some problems but dont push them away. Deal with them head on and you will amaze yourself when you finally appreciate that you have excellent problem solving skills, and can deal with your own problems and those of others as well. Your friends will discover that you are a bit of a trouble shooter, and they will learn to trust you. Gemini (May 22 to June 21) During June 2013 you really need to avoid arguments with loved ones. You may be right in what you are thinking but dont forget to consider others as well. It might be better to keep quite than offer an opinion which could cause offense, and anger. You will be proven right anyway so dont worry about it. Evaluate your emotions and learn how you really feel about things, and why you react in a certain ways. You might have a few sleepless nights watching the clock ticking away whilst you contemplate things. Remember it is important to balance career and ambition. It is important for your health as too much work, and no play, can cause problems with your immune system. Remember that stress weakens the immune system so do things that will boost your immune system. Life is about ebb and flow of energy.

Leo ( July 23 - August 23) During June 2-13take a look at your home life and make some decisions. Money will help but it is just as important to show that you care. There will be a strong focus on the younger members of the family and they really do need your help right now. Even if you are not their parent your advice will be appreciated. June 2013 will pass quickly and although work is important it will not be your main focus this month. During June 2013 you will learn there is more to life than hard work and striving for better status in life.

Virgo (August 24th to September 23) You will meet new people during June 2013 and they are from totally different circles that you normally move in. They will offer new perspectives and give you an idea. You will also learn that you may have to change your goals. Investments made some time in the past are looking good and will give you scope for movement. This is a good month for winning so you may want to enter a few competitions or even apply for a promotion at work. Be careful with what you eat during 2013 as the wrong foods, or too much, can cause health problems.

37

Libra (September 24 - October 23) Libra - let June 2013 be a month of reflection and you may want take a look at some of the goals that you have set for yourself.
