New Model FS 83 Brushcutter - Series 4141
Contents 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Technical Description Specifications Tools Accessories Service Accessories Repairs Spare Parts
The new low-emission STIHL FS 83 already complies with CARB II regulations. It uses a new engine (4141 powerhead) with a stratified scavenging system that reduces emission levels. In this scavenging system a layer of fuel-free air is stacked on top of the combustible mixture. This cushion of air achieves mostly fuel-free exhaust.
Benefits are a reduction in unburned gases in the exhaust and lower fuel consumption. The controls, drive tube and gearhead are exactly the same of the STIHL FS 85. Recommended applications are the same as for the FS 85.

Repairs
If the unit is started up in the course of repairs or maintenance work, it is essential to strictly observe all local and national safety regulations and the safety precautions outlined in the owners manual. 6.1 . . . Carburetor Adjustment Mount the approved cutting tool. Check air filter and fit a new one if necessary. Back off the idle speed screw (LA) counterclockwise until the end of screw (see arrow) is no longer visible. Rotate the screw six full turns clockwise from that position.
Standard setting
Adjusting idle speed . . . Carry out the standard setting. Start and warm up the engine. Set the idle speed properly with the idle speed screw (LA): Engine must not stop while idling and should accelerate smoothly.
LA
Engine stops while idling: . Turn the idle speed screw (LA) slowly clockwise until engine runs smoothly - the cutting tool must not rotate.
Turn the idle speed screw (LA) counterclockwise until the cutting tool stops rotating. Then turn screw about another two full turns in the same direction (counter-clockwise).
6.2
Tightening Torques
Tightening torques for the powerhead are listed in the shop manual for the series 4141 powerhead. For all other parts see shop manual for STIHL FS 75, 80, 85. Important! Tighten spark plug to max. 11lbf.ft (15 Nm) with the engine cold.
