Miracle Worker Helen Keller

SYNOPSIS

One night in 1882, at the Alabama home of Captain and Mrs.Keller, a doctor examines a baby in a crib while her parents stand anxiously by looking at her. At last he smiles, and tells them the crisis has passed and gone and said that she will recover from the illness. Her parents respond with joy and relief hearing the news. Captain Keller goes with the doctor to show him the way out. Mrs. Keller who stays with the baby, smiling, talking, and gently tucking the toys around her was frightened and freaking out. Something about the baby's face catches her attention. She is at first puzzled, then frightened. She calls out for Captain Keller, who returns at a run. She cries out her fears to him, he grabs up the lantern, and waves it before the baby's eyes, and screams her name to get a reaction all without result. Baby Helen is now actually permanently blind and deaf. After a very long time, about 6 years waiting and be patient with the Helens deficiency, the firstly decided to send Helen to a rehabilitation center. Mrs. Keller was firstly to reject the ideas. She explained that Helen is just want to be like them, to talk and

communicate like normal people. In desperation, her parents seek help from the Perkins Institute which sends them a half-blind Yankee school girl named Annie Sullivan to tutor daughter. Through persistence and love, and absolute stubbornness, Annie breaks through Helens walls of silence and darkness and teaches her to communicate. At the Keller's home, her first meeting with Helen is very talented. She quickly recognizes Helen's intelligence and curiosity. She has brought a doll for the little girl and Helen is delighted with it. Annie snatches the opportunity to introduce Helen to the alphabet for the deaf by spelling the word "doll" against Helen's palm. Fascinatedly, Helen spells it back to her, imitating the letters perfectly. She pleased, and Annie tries another word, but Helen is more interested in the doll than the new finger game. Annie makes the mistake of trying to take the doll away from her, and Helen uses the doll to lambaste her in the mouth. While Annie is surveying the damage, Helen quickly locks her in the bedroom, takes the key and runs away. Annie is able to get her employers' attention and alert them to her dilemma. In the disturbance that follows, Mrs. Keller searches Helen for the key, but doesn't find it; Captain Keller decides the best way to effect a rescue is to put a ladder up to the bedroom window, climb up it, and carry Annie back down. Despite Annie's protests that she can climb down herself, she makes the descent seated insecurely on Captain Keller's shoulder. Crisis resolved at last, Captain Keller orders everyone back inside to sit down to lunch. But Annie remained staying there silently behind Helen. Helen was not realized with the Annies

presence as the situation had been too silent and calm. Annie just staying at back watching Helen with the very sharp focus and she finally knew where had Helen hid the key of her room. She finally ran back to the house. 7

During the lunch time, Helen reaches for Annie's plate; Annie quietly takes off her hand. Helen is shocked at first, considers what has happened and reaches again, all the more determined to take something from this stranger's plate. A fight ensues, Captain Keller intercedes, explaining to Annie that they've found this to be the easiest course, and the only way they can have a relatively educated meal. Annie decides it's high time to begin her student's lessons. She chases the family out of the room, and the battle is on. It's a long and violent and fierce process Helen is as determined as Annie, and both girls know this is more than just a fight about plates and napkins. After a struggle which lasts into the afternoon and leaves both girls beaten and bruised, Annie emerges as the victor barely. Helen runs to her mother for comfort, and Mrs. Keller angrily asks Annie what happened. "She ate from her own plate," says Annie, softly. "She ate with a spoon. And relatively herself, and she folded her napkin." Mrs. Keller receives this news in wonder, seeing some hope for Helen for the first time. Next day at breakfast, Annie watches in disgust as Helen wanders about the table, taking food from each person's plate with her hands, and cramming it into her mouth. The adults pay no attention to her, obviously adapted to this behavior. When Annie listens, not uncaringly, but tells her honestly that she thinks Helen's greatest handicap is not deafness and blindness, but her mother's love and pity. "Why, even a dog you house break," she finishes. She has been exploring the grounds, and has found a little cottage that isn't used and neglected, except during the hunting season. She asks that they furnish this cottage with a couple of beds, a table and a couple of chairs, and let the cook's young son, Percy, sleep there to be available for shops. She instructs them to bring Helen there after a long cart ride, and leave her there, completely in her care. "She must be dependent on me for everything for food, for water even for the very airy she breathes," she says, because any of these might be an street through which she can reach her. Mrs. Keller eagerly agrees, and after a while so does Captain Keller, reluctantly for one month only. After that, whether she has been able to teach her or not, they must both return to the main house. Thus, hits on a plan to get Helen to tolerate her she brings Percy in from the other room. Helen was recoiled at first, but then recognizes Percy was also there and she overjoyed to have him there. Annie sits on the other side of Percy, takes his hand, and begins to show him how to spell. When Helen discovers what's going on, she tries at first to keep Percy away from Annie, then curiosity overcomes her and she tries to "eavesdrop" on the new signs Annie is teaching. At last, consumed with jealousy, she pushes Percy out of the way, and holds up her own hand disobediently, to be taught the new signs herself. Annie signs the word "milk" against her palm, and she repeats it back to her. Annie gives her a glass of milk, and helps her into bed. Agreement has been reached, and the work can begins. 8

Miracle Worker Helen Keller

In the days that follow, Helen learns many new things, how to wash and dress herself, how to feed and clean up after herself, how to climb a tree, how to paddle in a bay, how to play hide the thimble. She also learns many new words. But she still doesn't understand their significance, and in quiet moments it's clear she misses her mother and her old way of life. Mrs. Keller has been missing Helen, too. As previously agreed, she has come to the

house each day to watch her without her knowledge, and to learn from Annie the alphabet Helen is learning. She is pleased with Helen's progress and shares Annie's hope that some spark of understanding will eventually ignite in Helen's brain. But the month Annie was given to teach Helen without family interference is drawing to a close, and Mrs. Keller is not willing to persuade Captain Keller to extend it. On the last day, when Mrs. Keller comes for her, Annie must hand her over to their family She feels that she has failed. She watches sadly as Helen goes through the house, gathers up all the keys from all the doors, and takes them to her mother and puts them in her pocket a gesture that clearly indicates she wants her mother to be in charge again, and everything to go back to the way it was. Captain Keller hands Annie a check for her first month's wages, with a little speech of congratulations and gratitude. Annie confides her fear to him, that Helen will slip back into her old habits, and asks his help to keep Helen to what she's learned. He readily agrees and invites her to a special homecoming dinner for Helen, composed of all her favorite foods. Outside, Annie makes Helen hold the pitcher under the pump, while she works the pump handle. As the cold water pours over the pitcher and Helen's hand, Annie automatically spells the word "water" against her free hand. "W-A-T-E-R, water," she says aloud, a lesson she has repeated many times. "It has a name, and the name stands for the thing." She stops, noticing that Helen is standing fascinated, a look of thoughtful realization dawning on her face. The pitcher drops from her hands and shatters. Something is coming to her out of the past. The water has stopped flowing. Helen hits the nozzle frantically, to indicate she wants it to flow again. Annie pumps, and the water flows over Helen's hands again. "Wah....Wah..." she says and reaches for Annie's hand to spell the word against her palm. Annie puts Helen's hands on her face and nods to confirm that she is correct. Helen grabs the pump handle and pumps wildly herself, then holding Annie's hand under the stream of water; she spells the word against her palm again. With Helen's hands on her face, Annie nods again this is, indeed, water.

Miracle Worker Helen Keller

As they embrace her, Annie goes back to sit by the pump on the well cover, overcome with emotion. After a few moments, Helen pulls free from her sobbing parents, and finds her way over to Annie. Shyly she points toward her she wants to know her name this wonderful stranger who has turned the light back on in her mind, and put the world into her hand. Annie spells the word "Teacher" against her palm. Helen goes back to her mother, reaches into her pocket for the door keys she cached there earlier. She spells "Teacher" against her mother's palm, and brings the keys back to Annie.

Later that night, Annie sits alone in a rocker on the upper porch of the house. A door behind her opens, and Helen comes out to her. She kisses Annie and cuddles into her lap. Lost and found combatants and companions rescuer and rescued two turbulent souls at peace together at last.

MESSAGES From the movie Miracle Worker Helen Keller, there are many impact and messages that we can applied it in our daily life. Love In this movie, we can obviously see that how Helens mother loves her so much. Even with her disabilities she born with, Helens mother never biased on giving her love towards Helen and her other siblings. They always pay full attention on her and help her whenever she is in a hard situation as she cannot see, hear and talk. Even the maids in the family take a very well care of her. Other than that, we can see that Helens teacher also care about her and ambitiously want Helen to be like other ordinary girl out there. That is why is never giving up on teaching and training Helen. Respect Respect is what we earned by doing good deed. People will give you respect and appreciation for your good deed. For the Helen Keller movie, Helens father respect the teachers work and task assigned on her to educate Helen to behave I like other girl. So that he allowed Annie Sullivan to stay with her daughter at the neglected house near to their house just in order to educate Helen without any distractions. Determination Annie Sullivan is the total example of a person that got a full determination in whatever they are doing. She is not easily gives up when her attempts to teach Helen was failed since Helen was being extremely aggressive to her. She realized that Helens mother put hundred percent hope and belief on her to educate her daughter not be that aggressive and wild anymore. So she tried so hard to tame the wild Helen in way to meet with success in her way. In one of the favorite scene, Annie was extremely being so strong and determined to train Helen to be mannered at the dining table as Helen never being taught about table manner. Other people might end up giving up on

teaching such an energetic 6 years old girl like Helen.

11

Miracle Worker Helen Keller

Never give up Even at the first place Helens father is about to bring her to the rehabilitation center as he cannot anymore with her rebellious daughter. He felt that Helen messed up with everything in the house. She broke up things, steps on her baby sister, and being too spoilt. So he thought that brought Helen to the rehab is the best solution. Yet, her mother was totally not agreed with her. She did not want to be separated with Helen because Helen will be neglected once they were apart. She explained to her husband that Helen is the gift from god and they must take a good care of her. Lastly, her mother idea was about asked for a help from Perkins School for the Blinds. They send off Annie Sullivan to the family to tutor Helen as a response. Believe in ourselves Annie Sullivan believes in herself that Helen will be able to communicate with other people better than the ways she behaved at the first place when she met Helen. She knew Helens problem could be solved and she tried with all her effort to educate Helen even she got too many trouble from Helen herself. Actually, from her point of view she saw Helen as Mini her as she also was once a blind person later moved to the partial vision. This is why she believed that she could be trained and taught, so do Helen. People change Everyone can change and can be changed. It is whether changing from someone bad to become worse, someone bad to become better and someone good to become better. So do in this story, Helen who were having a communication failure since her birth could be trained and educate till she knew how to communicate much better than before. Before the teacher had come to their house, the only way Helen do when she want to say something or wanted to do something, she just knocked on any surfaces near to her or stomped her feet on the floor. Till she was being taught by her teacher, she finally learnt and knew how to give nonverbal messages every time she wanted to express something.

12

Miracle Worker Helen Keller

Sincerity Annie Sullivan knew how suffer Helen had facing since having a total disorder in herself where she cannot talk, cannot see and even cannot hear. All she can sense only by touching. Annie at the first place was as in same shoes as Helen where she was actually one of the patient at the Perkins School for the Blinds. Thus she is sincerely wanted Helen to be like her, succeed like her as well. Patient Annie Sullivan is best example to describe a person who is very patient. With the aggressive behavior that Helen owned since birth, she was calmly accept all the Helens flaws and be patient to teach Helen. She was never give up on Helen. Her

determination to help to heal Helen was absolutely strong.

Symbiotic relationship As viewed in the movie, the teacher and the student should conform to the symbiotic relationship. A symbiotic relationship is a relationship between two entities which is mutually beneficial for the participants of the relationship. As we observe, Helen Keller learned a lot from Annie Sullivan. The movie is a big help especially in telling that the teacher and student relationship creates a more effective teaching strategy if there is a give and take or symbiotic connection wherein the teacher is open to learn from the student and the student is also willing to learn from the teacher.

Suggestions and Comments

The Miracle Worker is the best video that we have watch that have many advantages and can influence all people to be more interactive. We believe that this is one of the most spectacular movies we have ever seen. The movie is about a 6 years old blind, deaf, and mute child named Helen Keller. After numerous attempts to communicate with Helen, Helens father hires Annie Sullivan, a twenty year old teacher from Boston. Annie Sullivan, who is virtually blind herself, has an aggressive, but meaningful approach to help Helen overcome her disabilities. This movie truly does deliver. The acting is superb. This is one of those movies that you can't just watch once. The more you watch it, the more you'll love it. We must admit, it's hard not to be emotional moved by this masterpiece which is "One of the finest works of art in the history of motion pictures." I can still remember that during those moments before we had watched the movie, I really asked myself if it is still possible for a person to learn if he/she has multiple sensory impairments such as the defects of the sight, hearing and speaking. Hence, after I viewed the movie, I definitely realized that even if the senses were impaired and not the mind, there would still be a possibility to learn the same way like those with normal sensory functioning if there is a collaborative support from the community, home and also school. I realized that through the movie, that children with multiple sensory impairments just ultimately need to have a language in a most unique way in order to learn since according to Annie Sullivan, language is more important to the mind than light is to the eye.

This film showed that we all have to get more spirit and smart in solving the problem even we have a big trouble. The Miracle Worker will help introduce children to Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan. Their story shows the strength and power of the human will and its ability to triumph over the most devastating disabilities. Helen Keller is one of the most remarkable people ever to have lived. She is a role model for a person who triumphs over profound disabilities. Anne Sullivan is a role model for a sensitive and innovative teacher. Without Sullivan, Keller would probably not have realized her great potential. The film can also serve as a springboard for a discussion of the meaning and importance of symbolic language. In this movie we can observe different learning theories and strategies which Sullivan used to help Helen to communicate. We can observe that Sullivan let her discover the world around by the sense of touch. Helen touched her face and she imitated her face. Later she could distinguish that those different faces represented a different feeling. Sullivan thought sign language not only to her, but also to her parents, making them part of the process of learning. 29

Miracle Worker Helen Keller

Even though, the parents had different visions of Helens education and, sometimes the blocked the process of teaching-learning, the teacher knew that their participation in the process was going to help her. She also thought her with a little boy. When Helen was with him she was less aggressive and more willing to learn. In the movie is clearly shown that Annie Sullivan gave direct instructions and repeated it them whenever it was necessarily. Meanwhile Helens parents rewarded her even if she had a bad behaviour, Annie Sullivan only rewarded her when she had a good behaviour or did a good job. Annie Sullivan was not only interested in teach Helen how to behave and follow instructions where she was also wanted to teach about understanding, language, not just rules. At the end of the movie we could appreciate that that happened. Helen was able to understand language, she was able to communicate and be less aggressive. This can guide to a conclusion that, every child in a way or another can learn. Using a variety of theories, strategies and, techniques we can teach all people. There are no real limitations when somebody wants to achieve something. There are some scenes from the movie that cultivate our emotions. As a viewer of the movie, we must suggest that for people with disabilities they just dont need our sympathy, instead, they need much of our empathy. People with sensory impairments like Helen Keller can make us to feel compassionate about them but to pity on them does not help a lot. What they need is our empathy wherein we must put our feet on their shoes and inquire on ourselves for a moment about what kind of life could there be if we have that sensory impairments. Being empathetic on them will open our hearts and minds to understand them and provide them the best assistance for them to become better person as they journey towards life. Apparently, Annie Sullivan showed her empathetic characteristics to Helen Keller and made Helen to realize that she is not alone and she is not the only person who has sensory impairment in this world. She taught Helen to become a better person like her and made Helen to be a productive person in the society. As a lesson I obtained from the movie and, I really need this empathy to become a better teacher later. As a conclusion, for whose that watch this movie and understand what the storyline try to tell audience, you all must to grab a attention and always try the best to achieving something. Based on this story, there a no any problem to solve the problem and we must to be like the actors shown in this movie. When we have a good attitudes and want to be a perfect person, we must to try the best for our self and dont think what the disadvantages and dangerous we will get when we do it and perform in doing something.
