Speed Control of Universal Motor Using 1 Phase Semiconverter

The document summarizes an experiment to control the speed of a DC motor using a single-phase semi-converter. It describes the theory behind using a semi-converter for speed control in a universal motor. The semi-converter provides speed control by varying the triggering angle α, which controls the average output voltage and thus the motor speed. The document provides equations showing the relationship between the triggering angle, output voltage, and motor speed. It outlines the experimental procedure and results which demonstrate speed control of a universal motor by varying the semi-converter's triggering angle.

Experiment no Aim:- to study speed control of dc motor using single phase semi converter.

Apparatus:- i) 1 semi converter, ii) Universal motor, iii) firing circuit, iv) power scope, v) connecting wires Theory:Semi converter is one quadrant operator. They have one polarity of voltage and current of dc terminal. The semi converter is only used for speed control of universal motor. Full converter is not used for universal motor since it has two quadrant operation that leads regenerative breaking which is not possible in universal motor. Speed control using semi converters have advantages like output average voltage increases and the smooth operation under continuous current is easily possible. Typically voltage and current waveforms are shown. SCR T1 is triggered at an angle and T2 at +. For the period t the motor is connected to the input supply through T1 and D2 and the motor terminal voltage Vd is the same as input voltage. Beyond period Vd tends to reverse as the input voltage changes polarities. This will forward bias the freewheeling diode. The currents freewheels the diode which makes it zero during period t(+) when the thyristor conducts from to . Energy from supply is determined to the armature circuit. The energy is practically stored in the K.E of the moving system and practically used the system as mechanical load. During the freewheeling period to + energy is converted to mechanical form to supplement the K.E in supplying the mechanical load. The freewheeling armature current continue to produce electromagnetic torque in the motor. During this period no energy is fed back to the supply. Torque-Speed Characteristic:V=jaRa+La V=0=jaRa+La +Eb +Eb . t .. t+

With 1 semi converter in the armature circuit the average armature voltage is given by:Va=Vdc= (1+cos)

The steady state speed is given by:( )

Ka res---- negligible Current operation is given by:Ia(t)= ( ( )) ( ) ( ) ( )

Practically Kares is negligibly equal to zero. Iq(t) = ( ( )) ( ) ( )

Procedure :i) ii) iii) iv) v) Make the connection as per the circuit diagram. Apply the supply voltage. Trigger the thyristor at a particular value of and observe the value of output voltage Vo, output current Io and speed. Take down the readings for different values of upto the motor becomes standstill. Observe the waveform on CRO.

Observation Table: 1 2 3 4 Vo Io N

Result :- the speed control of universal motor using 1 semi converter have been studied.
