(a) Find the determinant of A(). (b) Find a value 0 of such that the system A(0 )x = 0 has a nonzero solution for x R4 . (c) Prove that when < 0 , there is no real 4 4 matrix B such that B 2 = A(). 3. Let An be the n n matrix 2 1 0 0 0 (a) Prove that |An | = n + 1. 4. 5. Let A =

B C , where B is s s, D is t t, C is s t, and 0 is the t s zero matrix. Prove 0 D that det(A) = det(B ) det(D). [more on next page]

6. Let A, B be n n matrices. (a) Prove that if |A| = 0 then |AB | = 0. (b) Prove that if |B | = 0 then |AB | = 0. Note: you may NOT assume the result |AB | = |A| |B | from lectures, because this question is part of the proof of that result! But you may assume the result in lectures that says a matrix is invertible i it has nonzero determinant. 7. With notation for elementary matrices as in lectures: (a) Prove |Ai (r)| = r, |Bij | = 1 and |Cij (r)| = 1. 1 (b) Prove Ai (r)1 = Ai (r1 ), Bij = Bij and Cij (r)1 = Cij (r). 1 8. Express 0 3 2 1 8 0 3 as a product of elementary matrices. 7

9. For n n matrices A, B , write A B to mean that B can be obtained from A by a sequence of elementary row operations. Prove that A B if and only if B = E1 . . . Ek A, where each Ei is an elementary matrix. Deduce that the relation is an equivalence relation. 10. Say A and B are n n matrices with real entries, and A2 + B 2 = AB . If AB BA is invertible, prove that n is a multiple of 3.
