Letter of Recommendation (Bio)

Mr. Lim Seng Huat recognizes Chun Yeang as an academically competent student who attained the highest score in Biology in Lower Six. Although Chun Yeang studies physics on his own as there are no advanced physics courses offered at his school, he was selected for the Malaysian team for the International Physics Olympiad due to his self-study. While participating in a physics camp caused Chun Yeang to miss school and perform unsatisfactorily on Biology tests, he took initiative to learn the material on his own. Despite missing lessons, he performed exceptionally well compared to his peers. Letter of Recommendation for Mr.

Ooi Chun Yeang To whom it may concern, As his Biology teacher, I recognised Chun Yeang as an academically competent student with outstanding accomplishments. In Lower Six, he got the highest score in Biology and attained first place in Biology Stream. Yet, he is ambitious and bold enough to take physics as well in STPM, in which he studies on his own. His commitment to his studies has impressed me when he told me he was selected into Malaysian team for International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) 2012 because there is no opportunity for him to take advanced courses in physics in school. He had to read math and physics textbooks to master the advanced topics. In essence, he outperformed others in the selection camp with his self-study! However, his participation in the camp took him away from school for a substantial period of time that posed a risk to his grades. Upon realizing that his marks for my Biology tests were not satisfactory, he took steps to correct the situation. He picked up the syllabus on his own and asked for clarification whenever he felt the need to do so. Despite missing lessons, he was able to do exceptionally well compared to his fellow schoolmates. Judging from his progress in his ranking among his peers, he is a person who chooses to strive harder when faced with failures and disappointment. As the STPM marker for Biology, I think that his unsatisfactory grade in Biology Paper 2 shall not be an indicator of his capability and knowledge in this subject because the marking scheme for the paper is very rigid. Only 2 students in Penang managed to score A. Moreover, having a few interactions with Chun Yeang outside the class, he has told me about his passion towards human biology. When he shared with me the studies he did from the internet and research magazines, I was surprised initially by his indepth knowledge in this subject because he had been participating in physics competition actively. Now, I am certain that he clearly knows his direction and shows the drive and determination that I can expect in the exemplary student of high calibre. I am glad that he has applied for MBBS programme in NTU considering his interest and his caring personality, which is shown through his volunteering action in STPM 2013 Peer Group Learning Programme to teach his juniors for the new STPM modular system. I believe he will surely contribute immensely to the community if he is given the chance to pursue his selected course of study in NTU. Written by,
