Module 2

This module aims to teach students how to use an instructional nautical chart to determine position, direction, and distance between locations. Students will learn key chart terms like compass rose, latitude, longitude, and how to plot and measure positions. They will be assessed on accurately extracting and plotting coordinates, measuring direction and distance within 1 degree or 1 foot of error. Students must bring plotting instruments to complete exercises on the instructional chart IC-001 in a classroom setting.

MODULE 2

I.

LEARNING OUTCOME

After completing this module, you will be able to demonstrate the ability to use the Instructional Nautical chart (Chart IC 001) to determine the following information 1. Position of an object or an observer using the Earths coordinate system (Latitude & Longitude); 2. Direction and Distance between two places with pre-determine coordinates (using the compass rose and its latitude scale): 3. Plot a line between two places and measure its distance and direction. II. ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

1. Position of the given object or an observer were accurate extracted by latitude and longitude coordinates; 2. Objects were plotted on the chart by its given coordinates; 4. Directions between two pre-determine places were accurately measured using the charts compass rose with up to +/- 1 error range; 5. Distance between two places (in item 4), were accurately measured with up to +/- 1 error range. III. CONDITIONS

1. On a classroom or (plotting room) environment; 2. Cadets should bring have the following: 2.1 Plotting instruments; 2.2 Instructional chart IC-001

INFORMATION SHEET 1.1

Terms and definitions used in this module Compass rose - it is a compass like object printed on the convenient places on the nautical chart, where navigators use for measure direction from one object on the chart to another. Today, the idea of a compass rose is found on, or featured in, almost all navigation systems, including nautical charts. Direction- it is the direction measured using the compass rose printed on the instructional chart from point A to point B. Equator - is the intersection of a sphere's surface with the plane perpendicular to the sphere's axis of rotation and midway between the poles. Error range (+/-) it is the allowable difference between your extracted measurements (that your answer can be considered correct) and the correct measurement. Latitude- is a geographic coordinate that specifies the north-south position of a point on the Earth's surface. It is an angle which ranges from 0 at the Equator to 90 (North or South) at the poles. Latitude Scale it is the scale that can be found on the left and right side of the nautical chart, which is use for measuring distance on the nautical chart. Longitude- is a geographic coordinate that specifies the east-west position of a point on the Earth's surface. It is an angular measurement, usually expressed in degrees East or West from the Prime Meridian. Nautical chart - is a graphic representation of a maritime area and adjacent coastal regions. Pre-determine coordinates- it is the latitude and longitude coordinates of a given place, observers or a ships position. Prime Meridian - is a meridian, i.e. a line of longitude, at which longitude is defined to be 0. The meridian of Greenwich can be described as zero meridians.

OVERVIEW OF INSTRUCTIONAL AND PLOTTING CHARTS Instructional charts It represent a cross-section of chart content within one place or a fraction of the globe and are used by marine training programs as part of their course and examination materials.

Navigational Plotting Sheet It is another form of chart that is use for instructional purposes, where on the latitude and longitude scale with a one or two compass rose is printed. The instructor can also modify this plotting chart by inserting an object (buoy, lighted buoy or any other chart symbols.
