Portage County Cultural Festival

While growing up on the Bad River Reservation, Robin Dickersons mother taught her about their culture, sharing with Robin the art of beading and sewing in the tradition of her Ojibwa heritage. Robin has been practicing her craft since she was 10 years old, and will be demonstrating sewing and beading at the Portage County Cultural Festival as one of more than 30 different demonstrations taking place in the Ethnic Arts Area. In its 21st year, this festival celebrates the diverse cultures of Portage County by sharing food, music, ethnic arts and cultural traditions. More than 35 cultures are represented at the event being held May 11th from 10am to 5pm at Stevens Point Area Senior High, 1201 N. Point Drive. The goal of the event is to promote cultural understanding, while having fun, started in 1992 as an effort to build tolerance through understanding of the diverse ethnic backgrounds of the population of Portage County. More than 13,000 people attended the festival last year. The variety of activities and events is impressive, thanks to the dedicated volunteers who work year round to plan the day. The event is free to the public, funded by the community and a long list of sponsors.
