The book is called Even Steven and Odd Todd and it is a fictional math book. Steven and Todd are going to teach us all about odd and even numbers. Does anyone know what odd and even numbers are? o Allow two students to respond Before we read, I wanted to tell a little bit about odd and even numbers so that we can all understand this great story. o Even numbers are numbers that can be split into two equal parts with no leftovers. o Odd numbers cannot be split to equal parts; they will always leave leftovers. Lets look at examples of odd an even numbers on a Ten-Frame.
o Show the number 6 on the Ten-Frame and point out how everyone has a partner. Show the number 5 on the Ten-Frame and point out that there is one leftover. Now that we understand a little bit about odd and even numbers, I am going to read about Even Steven and Odd Todd. While I read I want you to look for examples of odd and even numbers. Keep in mind that Even Steven only likes even numbers and Odd Todd only likes odd numbers.
During Reading: Stop reading after page 4 o What are some ways that Even Steven shows he likes even numbers? Stop reading after page 8 o What are some ways that Odd Todd shows he like odd numbers? Stop reading after page 26 o Why was Even Steven so upset when he saw his ice cream? o Is 11 and odd or even number? After Reading: Now that we read all about Even Steven and Odd Todd, I want you to help me write down all of the numbers that they like best. o Students and teacher will make odd and even T-chart together (up to 10). I Noticed in the book, that Even Steven and Odd Todd like numbers that are bigger than 10! How can we tell if a two or three digit number is odd or even? o Allow students to share ideas If you want to know if a big number is odd or even you could draw out the number in a picture or a Ten-Frame to check for partners. Sometimes that might take too long, so there is an easier way to find out. o Explain that the last digit of a numbers always tells if its odd or even. o Challenge students to come up with a number over 20 that is odd of even. Explain all stations to students o Use student helper to demonstrate safe game play and appropriate carpet behavior. Station one: Even Steven and Odd Todd Board Game Students play the game with a partner. One player will be Even Steven and the other will be Odd Todd. Players start with their game pieces on Even Steven or Odd Todd. Players take turns rolling the dice. If the number is even Steven with move and Todd will move if the number is odd. The first player to reach the star at the end of the game Board wins.
Students will color all of the odd numbers pink to reveal the mystery shape on a grid. o Look for patterns in the grid, do any numbers repeat?
Station Three: Odd or Even Ten-Frames Students will be given a number and an empty Ten-Frame. Students will draw the given number on the Ten-Frame and circle if it is odd or even. o Do all of the dots on your Ten-Frame have a partner? o Do you see any leftovers? Station Four: Odd or even cubes Students will complete this activity on the carpet with partners or small groups. Each pair or group of students will receive a set of 1-20 flash cards. One student picks a card from the pile and reads the number. Students will work together to count out the corresponding number of manipulatives and pair them. Students will decide if the number is even or odd. o How did you pair your cubes and why? o Is there any other way you can equally divide your cubes? o Are there leftovers? Assessment: Students complete at least 5 out of 6 ten frames on the odd or even worksheet correctly. Students will be able to verbally explain that even numbers have partners with no leftovers. Students will be able to verbally explain that odd numbers have leftovers when they are paired. Students can identify whether a two or three digit number is odd or even by looking at the last digit of the number.
